  <Title>Update on Campus Hot Water System Repairs</Title>

    <div class="html-content">
    <p><span>Dear UMBC Community,</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><span>Thank you for your cooperation as the Facilities Management team makes complex repairs to the campus hot water system. We expect this work to continue through the weekend and want to provide you with a status update for the affected campus buildings.</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><span>The following buildings will continue to have reduced temperatures and will not have hot water: Administration Building, Retriever Activity Center, University Center, Engineering Building, Information Technology/Engineering Building, Math/Psychology Building, Sondheim Hall, Sherman Hall, Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery, Public Policy Building, Physics Building, Biological Sciences/Schwartz Building, and the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building.</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><span>Erickson Hall and The Commons will have reduced temperatures but</span><strong> will</strong><span> have hot water provided by auxiliary systems.</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><span>All buildings will remain open as usual and classes will continue as scheduled. Bathrooms will remain functional with cold water available.</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><span>Dining updates include:</span><span><br><br></span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><span>Dining locations in The Commons, The Admin Coffee Shop, and Starbucks will be open as usual.</span></li>
    <li><span>Chick-Fil-A will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday.</span></li>
    <li><span>Einstein's Bagels will remain closed until hot water is restored.</span></li>
    </ul>
    <p><span><br></span><span>We continue to monitor the temperature in buildings and are working closely with building managers and Residential Life staff to make sure operations continue effectively and safely and our residential students remain comfortable.</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><span>We appreciate your support and will update the campus as soon as hot water is restored.</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><em>Kathy L.   <Title>Health Literacy Month</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>October is </span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/healthliteracy/learn/index.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Health Literacy Month</span></a><span>! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines personal health literacy as "</span><span>the degree to which individuals can obtain, process, and understand the basic health information and services they need to make appropriate health decisions</span><span>."</span><span> Up until college, most of our parents/guardians were responsible for scheduling doctors appointments, handling health insurance, or even talking to doctors on our behalf.  Maybe you have lived with a health condition that required very specific treatment plans, and now you are responsible for managing it with limited help from your parents/guardians. It may seem like a lot to manage on your own, but trust me, it will get easier the more you do it. </span></p>
    <p><span></span></p>
    <p><span>Health literacy helps us to understand how we can better use health resources and how to take the best care of ourselves. Unfortunately, individuals with limited health literacy are more likely to:</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><p><span>Visit the emergency room</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Have more frequent and longer hospital stays</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Experience poor overall health</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Encounter difficulty managing their health conditions and medications</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Pay higher medical costs</span></p></li>
    </ul>
    <br><p><span>Understanding your health and how to use health services may be challenging at times, so here are a few tips to help you enhance your health literacy:</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><p><span>Prepare a list of questions before your doctor's visit.</span><span> Things may move fast during your appointment, so having a list of questions prepared ahead of time will help you to use the time efficiently. </span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Don't be afraid to ask your doctor to explain things</span><span> to you at a slower pace or even multiple times. </span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>If you are being prescribed a new medication, ask your doctor and the pharmacist to review</span><span> instructions so you can manage your medication properly. </span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Review your </span><a href="https://www.uhc.com/understanding-health-insurance" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>health insurance</span></a><span> benefits before you schedule appointments </span><span>so that you know what health services are covered and if your provider is in your health insurance network.           <p><span>Oats have fiber.</span><span> <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/002470.htm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">According to MedlinePlus</a>, e</span><span>ating a high-fiber diet can help reduce your risk of heart disease and high cholesterol.</span></p>
          <p>Women should aim to eat at least 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day, and men should aim for 30 to 38 grams a day. </p>
          <p>Check your nutrition label to see how much fiber you're eating each day!</p>

          <h4><span>Overnight Oats Recipe</span></h4>

          <h5><span>INGREDIENTS</span></h5>
          <ul>
          <li><span>1/2 rolled oats</span></li>
          <li><span>1/4 cup of vanilla whey protein</span></li>
          <li><span>2 tbsp of dried fruit</span></li>
          <li><span>1 tbsp of brown sugar</span></li>
          <li><span>1/4 tsp of cinnamon</span></li>
          <li><span>pinch of salt</span></li>
          </ul>

          <h5><span>INSTRUCTIONS</span></h5>
          <p></p>
          <ul>
          <li><span>Add 1 cup of milk or any dairy alternative to your mason jar.</span></li>
          <li><span>Stir to combine all ingredients.</span></li>
          <li><span>Place your covered jar in the fridge overnight.</span></li>
          <li><span>Enjoy your oatmeal the next morning either cold or placed into a bowl and heated up in the microwave.</span></li>

The Retriever Peer to Peer Listeners aim to provide a safe space for students to come and talk. Peer Listeners facilitate empathetic and restorative peer listening in order to establish a community for understanding, communication, and support. </div>

    <div>To set up a time with a Peer Listener, please review the below calendar for the Peer Listener's availability. Meetings can take place in person at the Library, Commons, University Center, or Res Hall Lobby or virtually through WebEx or Google Meets.
