          <p><span>Join our Team! Being a Woolie is a fun leadership position for undergraduate students, where you meet lots of great people, learn interesting facts about UMBC, and help create a fun, informative welcome program for new students. </span></p>
          <p><strong>Applicants will be reviewed and interviewed on a rolling basis, with best consideration given to those that apply before June 1.  </strong></p>
          <p><strong>Woolies are paid a $250 stipend and receive a number of other perks!</strong></p>
          <p>Welcome Week Leaders (WOOLIES) are ambassadors for UMBC, and facilitate Welcome Week for new students at UMBC. <span>Woolies develop relationships with new students, engage with Welcome Week events, and also help with the logistics of Welcome Week. Woolies are here to support new students and their transition to college by sharing their personal student experiences, valuable resources, and important upcoming events and opportunities.</span></p>

    <div>UMBC undergraduate students: Sign up to participate in a fun and 
    engaging art-making workshop that will help you harness the power you 
    have to shape your world. <br><br>During the workshop, 
    participants will reflect on significant experiences in their lives by 
    using everyday objects to make art. You do not need to be an “artist” to
     participate — in fact, this workshop will be particularly useful for 
    you if you do not consider yourself an artist. We will explore how the 
    practice of art-making as well as our stories can be sources of insight 
    that can help us make important contributions in our communities. You 
    can expect a lively and meaningful hour and a half spent creatively 
    expressing yourself and making connections with other UMBC students.<br><br>The workshop will be facilitated by UMBC student Tess McRae as part of her Individualized Study (INDS) senior capstone project.<br><br>Masks will be required.<br><br><strong>Spots are limited.     <h5>This common application which is called <em>Women's Center: Returning Women Students/Adult Learners 2022-2023</em> in <a href="https://umbc.academicworks.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Scholarship Retriever </a>enables eligible students to apply for more than one of the Returning Women Students/Adult Learner Scholarships with just one submission. Please note that <em>this opportunity to apply will only appear in Scholarship Retriever to students who meet the scholarship qualifications</em>. The six available scholarships via the Returning Women Student Scholarship Application are:</h5>

    <h5><em>Undergraduate students of any gender over the age of 25 and with at least 60 credits and 2.5 GPA may be eligible. Students must be completing their <u>first </u>undergraduate degree. </em></h5>
    <div><em>If a student does not meet these requirements, the scholarship opportunity will not appear on Scholarship Retriever. Students who have not completed the FAFSA will not see the opportunity in Scholarship Retriever. <strong>Students who wish to still be considered despite not meeting these requirements should contact the Women's Center directly. </strong>This encouragement to reach out directly to the Women's Center extends to students who have extenuating circumstances (i.e. students who are DACA/undocumented) that may prevent them from completing the FAFSA.</em></div>

    <div><strong>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>As a Business Systems Intern, I'm in charge of daily updates to any membership information/data. I update members' address changes, personal information changes, and more. I also make sure to input any gifts given to the museum, gift of memberships, manage membership card information and more. My day-to-day responsibilities revolve around making sure membership information is accurate and is in sync throughout the many databases we use. I have to make sure the data I am inputting is accurate so not only our department can benefit from it, but the entire institution. </div>

    <div><strong>Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>I found out about the position through a post on Linkedin by the museum. I submitted my application in late November. I was so excited to see this position because I already had experience working in museums but not in an IT related aspect. When I saw the position I knew I had to apply. Also, I love the Whitney's collection and I wish to move to New York after graduation. I heard back for an interview request in mid January, and was given a decision later that month. I began working on February 7th. It is a very competitive program and I was very happy to even be considered. I had one interview, but I felt I truly made a connection with the interviewers and I only wanted the position more after speaking to them. </div>

    <div><strong>What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization? </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>I have been fortunate enough to work on tasks that truly improve the membership experience. The team I work with is so dedicated to doing their best job because they know it doesn't just better the membership experience, but makes the museum a better institution. Database management is very important and crucial to the success of a museum. I've had the opportunity to meet with the senior staff, Museum Director, CFO, Chief Curator, and more. </div>

    <div><strong>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Everyone I have met at the Whitney is passionate about art and is very skilled at their job. I feel the same is true about me. I bring a creative perspective and an eagerness to learn to a department or field of work where creatives don't often work. Having this outlook allows me to not think so analytically in every problem and wanting to apply what I've learned in my classes to my responsibilities.</div>

    <div><strong>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Trying to enter the art museum field is incredibly hard because of competition and few institutions to apply to depending on your location. However, you can do it if you keep applying to positions and show employers you not only love art, but can apply your previous experiences and knowledge from classes to the work you may potentially do. Volunteering at a museum is a great way to introduce yourself. Always keep learning and ask those who work in the field any questions, people love to see someone who genuinely wants to learn. </div>

    <div><strong>Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.</strong></div>

    <div>I get to work with so many people who are passionate about their work. That motivates me to continue to learn and work hard, so I too can work in art museums after college. I hope to make valuable contributions and better the experience of our members. </div>

    <div><strong>DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>EPR - CBF’s Environmental Protection and Restoration department defends and restores the Chesapeake Bay by protecting the Bay’s natural resources from pollution and other harmful activities by fighting for strong and effective laws and regu­lations; restoring the Bay’s essential habitats and filtering mechanisms; and involving citizens in CBF’s environmental efforts by recruiting, training, and incorporating them as effective partners and leaders.</div>

    <div><strong>CONTEXT OF THE POSITION</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The Maryland Farm Stewardship Assistant (MFSA) will assist the MD Outreach Manager on outreach, restoration, and service-learning events CBF will be hosting in the Summer of 2022. Spending part of their time at sites across Maryland, and part at CBF’s Clagett Farm, the MFSA will gain exposure to both hands-on restoration practices and regenerative agriculture while working alongside CBF staff to defend the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint while engaging diverse constituents and stakeholders across the state.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Essential functions include:</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Assisting with the Farm Stewardship Program at agricultural, wetland, and riparian restoration events by:</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><ul>
    <li>Loading and transporting trees from CBF’s Clagett Farm Tree Nursery (in Upper Marlboro, MD) to the restoration sites using a truck and 14’ trailer (training will be provided- experience is a plus)</li>
    <li>Loading and transporting equipment to the site (prior to event days)</li>
    <li>Marking holes for auguring (prior to event days), if necessary</li>
    <li>Placing tree shelters and mulching trees (if needed) on planting days</li>
    <li>Re-staking or removing/placing shelters on trees at previous planting sites</li>
    <li>Help recruit a diverse contingent of volunteers for restoration events</li>
    <li>Assist volunteers on event days (signing in, demonstrating planting and use of equipment)</li>
    <li>Assist in maintaining tree nursery stock (weeding, watering, and organizing)</li>
    <li>Assist with small group volunteer events and workdays at CBF’s Clagett Farm</li>
    <li>Clean out and organize restoration storage areas at the Phillip Merrill Environmental Center</li>
    <li>Assist with post-event organization and entering volunteer data into tracking spreadsheets</li>
    <li>Tabling at fairs, festivals, and farmers' markets to promote the Farm Stewardship Program</li>
    </ul></div>

    <div><strong>PREFERRED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Successful candidates should have a strong background and interest in environmental science, agriculture, or related field; with a desire to pursue restoration and/or outreach work as a future career. A combination of hands-on outdoor experience and background education is a plus. The assistant will be required to work certain weekdays, weekends, and some evenings. Candidate MUST be available at least three days a week, all day, and on some weekends. The assistant must be comfortable lifting at least 40lbs. In addition, the candidate should be familiar with environmental issues and problems facing the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries and be able to work with the general public and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.</div>

    <p><strong><span>Ramadan 
    is a month dedicated to fasting, spirituality &amp; worship, and charity
     &amp; community. Ramadan is expected to begin Saturday, April 2. The 
    last day of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, is expected to begin on the evening of
     May 1. During Ramadan, Muslims around the world fast during daylight 
    hours and increase in their spiritual devotional acts such as </span>prayer
     and giving to charity. It is the holiest month of the Muslim year and 
    follows the lunar calendar. During this month, no food or drink 
    (including water) may be taken from dawn to dusk Worshippers eat a 
    pre-dawn light meal, called suhoor. After dusk, Muslims break the fast 
    with an evening meal called iftar<span>.</span></strong></p>
    <p><span>Given
     Ramadan's placement during the academic year, this will impact Muslim 
    students, staff, and faculty in various ways. In addition to being aware
     of this religious observance, you can support members of the Muslim 
    community this month in the following ways:</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><p><span>Understand that Ramadan is a time of spiritual cleansing and reflection.</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Acknowledge Ramadan and Eid by wishing folks well.</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Be
     respectful of prayer times - many people are more observant during 
    Ramadan and therefore may need to leave class, meetings, or other 
    obligations to pray for approximately ten minutes.</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Ramadan includes evening programs that will require folks to be out late - be understanding and empathetic.</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Check-in folks' mental health and overall well-being.</span></p></li>
    </ul>
    <p><span>For

    <h3><span>Ramadan Observance at UMBC</span></h3>
    <p><span>Ramadan
     Observance is being hosted by the Muslim Student Association. From 
    April 2 through May 2, 2022, the Center for Well-Being hours will be 
    temporarily expanded to 4:30 am - 1:00 am. The Gathering Space corridor 
    (rooms 109 and 105) will be accessible during these times, but the 
    conference rooms and the second floor will not be open. </span></p>
    <br><p><span>Participating
     students are expected to ensure that the space is left clean and 
    organized, and all materials and supplies are put neatly away so that 
    the space can be ready for use during regular business hours. This 
    includes ensuring that ALL food products have been appropriately 
    disposed of and cleaned. Participating students are expected to follow 
    the student code of conduct, and respect the space and property of i3b

Woolies are paid a $250 stipend and receive a number of other perks!</strong></p>
          <p>Welcome Week Leaders (WOOLIES) are ambassadors for UMBC, and facilitate Welcome Week for new students at UMBC. <span>Woolies develop relationships with new students, engage with Welcome Week events, and also help with the logistics of Welcome Week.     <div><p><strong><span>On March 31st, the world recognizes Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV).</span></strong></p></div>
    <div><strong><span><br></span></strong></div>
    <div>
    <p><span>Last year, we wrote this list of resources and started out by saying that "In 2021, TDOV comes at a time of deeply harmful political movements to suppress the trans community's access to health care and sports."</span></p>
    <br><p><span>That we continue to see an assault on trans peoples' rights and freedoms demonstrates how far we still need to go--and that we cannot stop at "visibility."</span></p>
    <p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><span>Chase Strangio, deputy director of transgender justice at the ACLU, told CNN, "There have been many existential threats to trans existence, but there's something uniquely dangerous about what's going on right at this moment with the combination of the sports bills and the health care bill... I think the impulse underlying both is to try to establish governmental policy that it's harmful to be trans."</span></p>
    <p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><strong><span>What actions can I take to support trans people in my life?</span></strong></p>
    <p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><span>Typically, we try to see TDOV as a day of celebration--and it is still--but it is also a call to action for all of those who call themselves allies to the trans community. </span></p>
    <br><p><span>On TDOV, we hope you consider taking action and actively fighting against these measures. Some suggestions for next steps include:</span></p>
    <br><ul>
    <li><p><span>writing the governors of the various states that are considering and passing these bills, </span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>donating to trans organizations working to fight against this bigotry, </span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>and/or calling your own state and federal representatives to demand they stand up for trans people's right to both healthcare and participation in sports. </span></p></li>
    </ul>

    <br><p><span>In addition to doing this important work, consider simply learning more about the transgender community by centering trans creators, authors, activists, artists, scientists, policy makers, etc. Below, we have gathered resources to read/listen to/watch and folks to follow on social media. These are just a very few of the people and groups that you should look into--so please do explore further!</span></p>
    <br><p><span>Visibility is a small step toward progress, but it's only the first of many. There is still so much work to be done, as we can see by today's news, but we can continue to build the futures we imagine. We can keep dreaming up utopia, uplifting transgender voices, and constructing bridges between difference. Today, I hope that you spend some time thinking about a trans affirming, trans liberatory, trans joyous future--and maybe take the time also bring society a little closer to that kind of reality.</span></p>
