Work on transferable skills!

The skills you’ll acquire throughout your academic life offer more to your future career than you might realize! As a student, you develop technical skills related to your major. Engaging in a wide range of experiences outside of the classroom will help you build well-rounded, transferable skills to enhance your academic work and make you stand out from the crowd.

By reflecting on some of the following questions, you can start to figure out what types of meaningful experiences could complement the academic field you are pursuing:

What do you consider your overall strengths?

What are some interests you have outside of your academic major?

How would you rate your communication skills?

Do you have any leadership experience?

Do you enjoy working in groups or by yourself?

Do you consider yourself creative?

What’s your approach to problem-solving?

Here are some ways to help you build transferable skills at UMBC!

Join a student organization - Besides being a meaningful way to connect with your peers over shared interests, being involved in a student organization is a great way to take the initiative on projects you care about and work together outside of the classroom. You can also add your voice and find your place within our campus community. You can also stay connected through both virtual and in-person campus life initiatives!

Connect with the Career Center - Gaining real-world experience through an internship, research, or a co-op experience is one of the best ways to make yourself a competitive candidate for full-time jobs and graduate/professional school. The Career Center offers career advising and counseling, networking events, on-campus recruiting, on-campus interviews, career, professional skills education, and applied learning opportunities (internships, co-ops, and research) to help prepare you to envision your possible future career opportunities!

Consider adding a minor to your degree - Complementing your primary major with a minor or certificate program can be a great way to add extra knowledge and new skills to your bachelor’s degree. This can also be a great way to explore other personal interests you might have as well as make you unique in the eyes of future employers. Exploring programs such as foreign language studies or entrepreneurship can be great additions to any major. Check out all the possibilities and talk them over with your advisor!

Get involved with Service Learning and Community Engagement through the Shriver Center – Ever want to apply what you’re learning outside of the classroom? The Shriver Center has you covered! Through its Service-Learning and Community partnerships, you could step outside the boundaries of the classroom and experience the real world. Through The Shriver Center’s many opportunities, the UMBC community can continue to serve organizations through capacity-building projects and digital delivery of services.

Consider becoming a student worker – UMBC has lots of job opportunities for students. This can be a great way to apply what you’ve learned at UMBC to help other students and gain useful job experience yourself! From tutoring to working in various offices around campus, be sure to check out UMBCworks and the Federal Work-Study job list for campus job postings throughout the year!

Share your research - All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship, or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at the Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD). URCAD XXVI is now open for applications and will be held this year from April 18-24th. You will be able to view presentations, watch films, see videos of dance and music performances, view artwork, and interact with presenters during the event. Applications are due by Friday, February 18th, so don’t miss out on this opportunity to share your work with our UMBC community!

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking about all the different experiences UMBC offers and how they might benefit your overall success! What experiences at UMBC have helped you build your skillset?

A Giving Day Q+A with Dr. Kate Tracy

In honor of Giving Day, I reached out to Dr. Kate Tracy M.A. ’01, Ph.D. ’03 to ask her a few questions about the importance of giving and what the experience of giving has meant for her.

You may be familiar with Dr. Tracy’s name because for the past several years, Dr. Tracy has supported the Women’s Center on Giving Day by offering match challenges to our community. She also created the Maxine Tracy Endowment which provides the Women’s Center funding to support our Returning Women Students/Adult Learners Scholars + Affiliates program. It is also the namesake of our Wellness Room! Just recently she began the quest to fund a new endowment, the Kate Tracy Endowment, which will help provide scholarships to UMBC students in the future.

I’ve had the pleasure to get to know Dr. Tracy over the past several years and wanted to share a little bit more about this person who cares so much about the Women’s Center with our community. I had the chance to connect with her and ask her a few questions about the importance of giving and what’s she’s learned from the experience. I hope that learning a little bit more about Dr. Tracy will inspire you to find your “why” this Giving Day!

Jess: You’ve been supporting the Women’s Center for several years now – first to create the Maxine Tracy Endowment and now the Kate Tracy Endowment. What is your motivation behind your giving? And, what have you learned about yourself from the experience of giving?

Dr. Tracy: My original motivation for giving to the Women’s Center at UMBC was to honor my grandmother, Maxine Tracy. She was my hero and a lifelong supporter of women’s professional development. Giving to the Women’s Center was a tangible way for me to honor her influence on my life and continue her legacy of supporting women’s professional development.

I’ve continued my giving to the Center out of gratitude. I feel very grateful for the many ways UMBC is woven into my own professional story. I want to continue to support the Center and be a champion for the work it does.

Jess: In some of our earlier conversations, it was clear to me that you found it important to carve out space for other women to see the possibilities in themselves being philanthropists. Can you share more about why this matters to you?

Dr. Tracy: Women’s philanthropy is often less visible. And I’d like to see that change. One way to foster that change is to share our stories of giving…what motivates us to give…how and what we give—whether it’s our time, talents, or our resources. Every gift—no matter the amount—will make a difference!

Jess: This is the third year you’ve offered a match challenge on behalf of the Women’s Center for Giving Day. What encouragement can you give to our potential donors to help us meet your challenge?

Dr. Tracy: One of the reasons I continue to offer the match challenge on behalf of the Women’s Center for Giving Day is to encourage others to join me in supporting the Center. The programming, support services, and advocacy the Center offers are so important to the UMBC community. I’m proud to be a supporter and want to do whatever I can to encourage others to support the Center and its mission.

You can learn more about Dr. Tracy and her grandmother, Maxine, by reading this UMBC Magazine article entailed Living Her Values that was published last fall (and is featured in the most recent hardcopy version of the UMBC Magazine).

We’re grateful for Dr. Tracy’s support… and for all of our generous donors who give of their talent, treasure, and time. Thank you for you!

And…

  <Tagline>Learn about Olisa's Summer 2022 internship with Aptiv!</Tagline>

    Name: Olisa Okolo

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Aptiv

    Position Title: Data Science Intern

1. What is your major and class level?

I am currently a junior and an Information Systems major.

2. What is your long-term career goal?

My long term career goal is to become a data scientist and to explore applications of machine learning for social improvement.

3. What attracted you to the internship at Aptiv? Why did you apply?

I feel that Aptiv represents an amalgamation of my enthusiasm for vehicles and technology. Aptiv's mission to enable a greener and more connected future of mobility immediately jumped out to me. It sounded like an opportunity to be a part of innovation I can always be proud of.

4. What will you be doing as an intern at Aptiv this summer? What skills are you hoping to learn?

My role at Aptiv is as a Data Science Intern at Aptiv Connected Services where I will be working with the data science department to apply machine learning techniques on diagnostic data from pre-production testing of new vehicle technologies. I'm hoping to learn what kind of data is considered to make improvements in performance and ecological impact.

5. Does Aptiv pay for your housing or provide assistance in finding housing since the internship takes place out of state?

Yes, Aptiv provides a very competitive housing stipend alongside a great pay.

6. What was your application process like and the interview process?

The application process was very welcoming. After submitting an application, there was a two step interview process, the second of which I met with my future team leader and he assessed my Python knowledge. Every step of the way, everybody I met was extremely helpful

7. What are you most looking forward to interning at Aptiv this summer?

Aptiv's internship is in person at their main office and testing facility. I am most looking forward to getting a front row seat to the pre production testing of new vehicle technologies and driver assistance systems. It feels like getting a sneak peek at some new tech.

USM and UMBC Covid Updates

Dear UMBC Community,

Our on-campus testing and case response results continue to demonstrate that we are on the downward slope of the COVID-19 curve caused by the Omicron variant. Due to these results, we were pleased to reopen lounges and community spaces in residence halls this past week.

Yesterday, the University System of Maryland released a statement sharing that each campus is in the process of evaluating its health and safety measures, and that each would be taking a “measured, step-down approach to relaxing their mitigation protocols.” We want you to know that this evaluation process is currently happening at UMBC.

The COVID-19 Planning Coordinating Committee and a series of workgroups meet weekly to review the data and recommend next steps. We are also actively consulting with our shared governance leaders and other key constituents to understand the needs of community members. We are discussing several measures - including our mask requirements - and hope to be able to share updates with you soon. We anticipate that any steps we take will include both phased approaches and context specific recommendations. We continue to hear from groups with unique requests and safety concerns and know that one approach may not apply to our entire campus. Since we know that the virus will be with us for some time, any rollback will also be accompanied by an option to reinstate measures should another variant affect our community.

Thank you for your continued partnership and patience as we navigate this pandemic. To understand current health and safety requirements, please visit our COVID-19 website and contact us at covid19@umbc.edu if you have questions. Finally, we continue to offer free on-campus COVID-19 booster shots. If you have not already done so, please sign up today!
