  <Title>Intern of the Week: Joe Fleming for Mechanical Engineering!</Title>

    <div>
    <strong>Name</strong>: Joe Fleming</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <strong>Internship, Co-op, or Research Site</strong>: Northrop Grumman</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <strong>Position Title</strong>: Quality Engineer</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <strong>Major or Program</strong>: Mechanical engineering </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <strong>Current Class Level</strong>: Senior</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <strong>Work Term</strong>: Summer 2020 and 2021</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Mainly Inspection based and paperwork that is a low enough level for interns to be able to do.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>I was able to obtain my internship from the BEYA STEM career fair and it was mainly a success due to the in person aspect that let me physically talk to them and gain that personal connection that is now tough to do.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization? </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Witnessing how the real engineering world works and how actual engineers handle their work and lives. It’s very interesting to see from the other side.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>I always strived to do work and be better. My previous employers really loved how I always asked questions, didn’t act like I knew everything, and always wanted to do more.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Be able to talk to the recruiters and try to be able to have that social physical connection. Also be down to earth and willing to do things that you may not have at the top or your list.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>When I had my Northrop interview, my interviewer loved that when he asked “what do you want to do?” I gave a list of things I wanted to do but also emphasized that I am not going to be picky as a student just trying to get my foot in the door. I knew once I got a chance I could show them what I do for the company as far as respect, communication, and quality work.</div>

    <br><p><span>Dear UMBC Community,</span></p>
    <br><p><span>We are writing to express our appreciation of your efforts to comply with current campus health and safety protocols by getting a COVID-19 booster, physical distancing, completing an </span><a href="https://covid19.umbc.edu/entry-testing-spring-2022/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>entry COVID test</span></a><span>, and wearing high quality </span><a href="https://covid19.umbc.edu/masks/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>KN95 masks</span></a><span> indoors. If you need any more information about any of these requirements please visit our </span><a href="https://covid19.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>COVID-19 website</span></a><span>.</span></p>
    <br><p><span>As a result of your commitment to the health and safety of our community, we are seeing promising trends both across the state and at UMBC. Early test results indicate that we are effectively minimizing transmission on campus, and our weekend testing positivity rate was below 1%. Please continue to stay home if you are sick, and if you test positive for COVID-19, </span><a href="https://covid19.umbc.edu/if-you-test-positive/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>review this guidance</span></a><span>.</span></p>
    <br><p><span>We strongly encourage you to get a booster shot as soon as you are eligible. Many community members took advantage of our on-campus vaccine clinics and we are planning on offering more clinics. We also encourage you to reach out to local pharmacies to schedule your booster shot. Our experts assure us that remaining up to date with your COVID-19 vaccination is the single most important step in preventing severe illness. </span></p>
    <br><p><span>Please know that while our current safety measures are essential we understand that they can be challenging for some. We do not anticipate they will last forever and our teams meet every week to evaluate the current situation and the necessary safety protocols. We hope that if we continue to observe low testing positivity rates on campus, it may be possible to release some of the current restrictions, especially in regards to masking protocols and closures in our campus residential communities. </span></p>
    <br><p><span>Finally, we know that the continued pandemic continues to be challenging, especially for our mental health. Please reach out if you need help. Undergraduate and Graduate students can connect with </span><a href="https://health.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Retriever Integrated Health</span></a><span> and the </span><a href="https://academicsuccess.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Academic Success Center</span></a><span> for both personal and academic support. The purpose of all MLE programs is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify within diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, strengths, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. The spring cohort experience is offered SOLELY for selected applicants (up to 18 undergraduate and graduate students). All locations for meeting dates and times will be announced via email to selected participants and invited through Google Calendar.

          <p><strong><br></strong></p>
          <p><span>The first session will cover a brief overview of the program. However, please note that all details related to session topics will be only disclosed to the cohort. Additionally, as we continue to monitor all COVID related procedures, the first session will be held virtually followed by in-person sessions. This is subject to change according to university guidelines. Meeting dates and times are as follow:</span></p>

Collecting student and visitor data will support our assessment practices, and help us make funding decisions regarding supplies, prayer space and other needs. All data collected will be maintained confidentially within the UMBC Rex system. If a student or guest does not have a UMBC ID card, paper sign-in sheets will be available.</span></p>

          <p>Accessibility and Disability Service and Student Disability Services highlight Black History Month.</p>
          <p>Rediscover
           how some members of the Black Civil Rights Movement also played
          essential roles as activists in the US Disability Rights Movement, and
          paved the way for disability rights activists to influence social change
           and legislation. Many people with disabilities were part of both
          movements and continue to be today. <a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81001496" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp</a> shows
           how intersectional being black and disabled can be - beyond the Black
          Panthers. Further back in history, learn new things about the famous
          Black figures who also had disabilities. For instance, Harriet Tubman
          lived with epilepsy and narcolepsy.</p>
          <p>In the links described below,
          we hope you may find information you will be happy to rediscover or
          learn for the first time. Black history is being made this moment, and
          there is an endless amount to learn from the past. A little time spent
          exploring Black history this month may lead you in enlightening
          directions. <p><strong>Black Disabled and Proud: College Students with Disabilities</strong><span> is
           a website by the HBCU Disability Consortium. Their page titled “Black

          Black history as it intersects with disability. <a href="https://www.blackdisabledandproud.org/black-lives-matter.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">(link)https://www.blackdisabledandproud.org/black-lives-matter.html</a> The page includes links to thoughtful articles as well as self-care info.</span></p>
          <p><strong>The Disability Visibility Project’s</strong> Black
           Lives Matter page has podcasts (with transcripts) that explore the
          individual experiences of people who are actively contributing
          individually and/or organizing to raise awareness about being Black and
          having a  disability.  <a rel="nofollow external" class="bo">(link)https://disabilityvisibilityproject.com/tag/black-lives-matter/</a>  Click through on the posts and find things like Jen White Johnson’s Black Disability Lives Matter mural <a href="https://jenwhitejohnson.com/Black-Disabled-Lives-Matter-Mural-Project" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">(link)https://jenwhitejohnson.com/Black-Disabled-Lives-Matter-Mural-Project</a> </p>
