Emergency construction outside Sondheim/Math-Psych/Sherman will continue and hopefully end this week.  People will be able to get through on Academic Row, but the South accessible entrance to our building will remain unavailable.  Signage is placed and they have a flagger on site to help people find their way.  The North assisted door on the first floor remains available.  Other accessible entrances to the Math/Psych building include:
2. The Biology building has one older elevator waiting on a part - the elevator right next to it is operational, and the third, new Access Maryland project elevator on the other side of the breezeway (the Schwartz Hall section) serves all floors of the Biology building as well.

3. The RAC Replacement Elevator is almost complete. It will be inspected during the second week of class - the front desk staff will assist anyone needing access to the lower (court) levels.

Earlier today, UMBC Police received a report of a fire alarm in the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery. UMBC Police and the Baltimore County Fire Department responded immediately and determined that there was not a fire. Unfortunately, there was a significant plumbing issue that has resulted in a temporary closure of the building. The Admissions and Financial Aid offices remain open.  


The library will be closed tomorrow, February 1, 2022. The Retriever Learning Center will be open tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.


We are working to reopen the building as quickly as possible. Please check the library website for updates on when the building will reopen.

Women's Center Spring 2022 Hours of Operation:

Beginning on the first day of classes, the Women's Center will resume our traditional in-person hours of operation and will welcome community members into our physical space. 

In order to maintain physical distancing, the lounge space will be operating at 50% capacity. Masks are required to be in our space. 

Our Spring Hours are:
Mondays through Thursdays: 11am - 5pm
Fridays: 11am - 4pm

Our usual plates/mugs/utensils will still not be available so please bring your own if you plan on drinking or eating in the space.

While we are physically open, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714.  

The Women's Center lactation room is also available for Spring 2022 reservations and use. For details, contact us at womenscenter@umbc.edu or visit our myUMBC post.

Individualized Support Meetings:

Dear Community Members, 


We wanted to share that the Pride Center will unfortunately be closed for the rest of today and we are disappointed to share this news on the first day of spring classes. There has been a ceiling issue in the space that caused the ceiling to cave in. In the interest of the safety of our community, we are working to resolve the issue and get back up and running to be in community again. We hope to be open again tomorrow and for the rest of the week, we will be open from 9am-5pm. In the meantime, it might be unsightly in the space so we pardon our appearance and welcome any further thoughts or questions you have as we work to get it fully repaired. Thank you to our wonderful ABN staff member, Sonia who helped to make sure the space is looking clean and neat again!  


In the meantime, we have other awesome spaces across campus to check out today and beyond:

Black and Latine/x Graduation Ceremony

Time to Celebrate UMBC Black & Latine/x Graduating Students

This evening event celebrates the wonderful achievements of UMBC’s  Black and Latina/e/o/x graduating seniors and graduate students. Black and Latine/x students have been historically underrepresented in post-secondary degree attainment and have overcome incredible odds to succeed and make an invaluable contribution to the wider UMBC community. 

 

This ceremony is in recognition of this milestone of our Black and Latine/x students as well as an evening to be in community with all the staff, faculty, alumni, and loved ones that have supported them. Seniors and graduate students graduating in Spring and Fall 2022 will be recognized and receive a Black and Brown honor cords, as well as a special CBLA Black and Brown pin! To receive your Black and Brown honor cords and pin, please fill out our Lavender and Black & Latine/x Celebration Social Media Campaign + Graduation Package Form [Link Coming Soon]. DEADLINE to receive cords: April 29th, 2022 at 9:00a.m. Award categories will encompass student, staff, faculty, and programmatic efforts, and will include recognition for Black and Latine/x community members, as well as their allies.

Where can you share your grief? Pandemic Grief Processing Group is a 3 session support group for those experiencing loss during COVID. What have you lost due to COVID? What are you grieving? Who can you share your grief with?

The Pandemic Grief Processing Group aims to make space for honoring and acknowledging the losses students, staff, and faculty within the UMBC community have experienced in these last 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. This discussion-based program will explore the different kinds of grief and loss people may be experiencing individually and as a society, giving language and space for each of the participants to express their personal stories.

Our intention for this group is to create a space for processing, connection, healing, and collective growth. We will collaborate in the creation of a community grief ritual together even as we are still moving through our grief in different ways.

PGPG will be run as a 3-week program. The group will meet for a 90-minute session, once a week, for three consecutive weeks. The first two sessions will be online on Fridays, February 18th and 25th, 2:00-3:30 and then our hope is that the group will conclude with a final in-person session on Friday, March 4th, 2:00-3:30 in the Women’s Center. To indicate your comfort with meeting in person, please see the commitment form below.

Note: To ensure that we have time for everyone to share their stories, we will be limiting the number of participants to 12.
This group is open to all students and faculty/staff of the UMBC community.


*Positionality statement: The facilitators of this group are senior social work students in their final practicum. We are not professional grief experts but we have experience in facilitating supportive groups as well as individualized counseling with peers. We hope to hold space for everyone and that, together, as a community, we can learn from and support each other.

Dear Commuter Students,


Welcome to Spring 2022 at UMBC! Whether you are a new or returning Retriever, we are excited to have you and look forward to connecting. If there is ever any way Off-Campus Student Services can be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us or stop by our office in Commons 1A02, right next to the Bookstore.


As we gear up for another semester, OCSS wants to make sure we continue to keep our UMBC community as safe as possible from the Omicron variant of COVID-19. We have been extremely successful in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 because of all of you and that is not lost on us. You make the difference and we appreciate you for that. To ensure that we remain on the right path, this letter is intended to review UMBC’s COVID-19 response and the safety measures that will continue to keep our community safe.  


  • KN95 masks are required. All community members are currently required to wear a KN95 or equivalent mask indoors in public spaces at UMBC. This includes in classrooms, on transportation, and inside dining facilities when not actively eating. KN95 equivalent masks include: an N95, KN95, or KF94 mask, FFP2-3, or a double surgical mask. Free KN95 masks are available during business hours at the UMBC Police Station, Campus Card and Dining Services, the Retriever Activities Center, The Commons Information Center, and the Albin O. Kuhn Library Circulation Desk.

  • Entry testing is required for Spring 2022. All community members are required to take an on-campus PCR test on the first day they return to campus. If possible, we also recommend that you take an at home rapid test the day before you return to campus in addition to the required PCR. Here is some additional information on how to test.

  • Vaccinations are required. The University System of Maryland and UMBC are requiring all students, faculty and staff to remain up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations. This includes an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine—a “booster shot”—when you are eligible. Make sure to report your vaccines or request an exemption as soon as possible. 

  • Maintain physical distance and limit gatherings. Evaluate all of your group activities. Other than going to class, we strongly encourage moving group meetings and study groups online. Many of OCSS’ activities will be online. When conditions permit, we will also offer some safe in-person options for events.
