THE WORLD.
The oceans have inspired awe and intrigue since the beginning of
time, with heroic tales of exploration passed down through countless
generations. Now, we are offering a unique ocean educational adventure:
the chance for twelve young explorers to travel to Gibraltar on January
5thand join OceanX’s research and exploration vessel, OceanXplorer, on
its voyage to Malta.
For a chance to join the expedition, budding university-aged
explorers are invited to answer the following prompt: Describe your
dream scientific ocean exploration and storytelling project. How would
you use OceanXplorer’s state-of-the-art facilities and resources in
your mission? Get creative and show us your exploration chops.
Submissions must be received by 11:59 PM EST November 18, 2021.
We are looking for individuals of all backgrounds and disciplines
(physical and biological sciences, engineering, filmmaking, technology,
communications, etc.), who are interested in pursuing a career focused
on the ocean. Selected candidates will have full financial support for
travel, lodging and meals.
Explorers will participate in an eleven-to fourteen-night expedition aboard OceanXplorer, OceanX’s one-of-a-kind, world-class, 87-meter research and exploration vessel. Explorers will hear amazing tales of past missions, learn from our expert team of scientists, storytellers and crew members, execute important scientific, media and operations projects in furtherance of our social welfare mission, and gain firsthand experience in ocean exploration.

As you make your personal plans for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and accompanying break, please take a moment to consider the safety precautions you need to consider to keep our community healthy. We ask that you:
1. Review CDC guidance on domestic and international travel.
2. Consider the most effective way to minimize your risk as you gather with friends and family, particularly if there are individuals in your family who are unvaccinated or at a higher risk of COVID-19 complications. The CDC provides excellent advice on Safer Ways to Celebrate Holidays.
3. Test if necessary. Fully vaccinated community members without symptoms are not required to test but may use on-campus testing if they think they may have been exposed. Any community member who is not fully vaccinated is required to test immediately upon returning to campus. More information on testing is available here.
4. Stay healthy! If you have not already, please consider getting a flu shot. If you are sick, do not come to campus. If you are exposed to someone who has COVID-19, review our response and reporting protocols before returning to campus.
We have had tremendous success at keeping our campus healthy and controlling the spread of COVID-19. We appreciate everything you are doing and ask for your ongoing support as we continue this effort.

World renowned scholar Professor Angel Lin will speak about what it means to teach English as a second or foreign language in a globalized world still dominated by the historical processes of imperialism and colonialism and the cultural and psychological aftermath of such processes. Finding and Creating Community Away from Home is a facilitated conversation among international students and students who have studied abroad or intend to do so. The conversation will focus on how participants have been or hope to be able to form meaningful connections and make contributions in their temporary communities (geographic, campus, etc.).

Current TESOL MA students and recent alumni are welcome to an information session for U.S. State Department opportunities to teach English overseas – the Fulbright U.S. Student English Teaching Assistant Program and the English Language Fellows Program. This panel will provide with a brief overview of the recent history of Afghanistan as it relates to the current situation, starting from the 1979 invasion of the Soviet Union, the 1989 withdrawal and consequent civil war, the 1995 takeover of the Taliban, their defeat in 2001 by the U.S. and coalition force, followed by the 20 years of ongoing war in Afghanistan from which the U.S. just withdrew in late August. Afterwards, the panel will begin an open discussion about current issues facing Afghanistan today.
