Face the Faceless

Content warning for sexual assault.

Morgan is a senior here at UMBC pursuing a BA in Media and Communications major with minors in English and Cinematic Arts. If she’s not working at the Women’s Center you can find her watching Ghost Shark (2013) with her friends.

You know who Brock Turner is.

In January 2015, Turner sexually assaulted “Emily Doe.”. His face was splattered everywhere in the media. Sometimes it was his mugshot and other times it was the shining photo of him competing on Stanford’s swimming team. He’s a rapist but look, he’s an athlete! One year later, in 2016, you knew his face and you knew his name. Prosecutors recommended six years. He was sentenced to six months. He served ninety days. In a letter to the judge, his father stated that legal repercussions were a “steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”

We were all forced to reckon with the reality that for many victims of sexual assault they get no real sense of justice, in court or otherwise. Emily Doe was a blank space and Brock Turner’s narrative was the one that filled it.

That was until Chanel Miller revealed herself to be the “Emily Doe” in the case of Turner vs. the People. Now, the case takes on a different face. Not only is Chanel Miller a survivor of sexual assault, but she is a woman of color, white and Chinese-American. I, along with countless others, had assumed she was white. It immediately became clear why there had only been a six-month sentence, why the judge was so quick to discredit her, and why her facelessness resonated so deeply. Chanel Miller, like many before her, was another woman of color who knew all too well the intersections of white supremacy, rape culture, and violence against women of color.

Her pain feels familiar in too many ways. Miller was violated in the same way that white men historically and continually perpetuate violence (especially sexual violence) against women of color over and over again. Take for instance, the expected sexual violence against black women by their white slave owners. This was normalized so much so that raping a black woman was not a crime for much of history. How can you violate your own property? Or the comfort women of Eastern Asia–women and girls forced into sex slavery by the Japanese Army around World War II. Women from China, Korea, the Philippines, and many other areas were objectified by the Japanese who believed themselves to be a superior people. For the Imperial Japanese Army, it was not just about sex; rather, it was about power and domination.

Rape is never about pleasure. It’s about power. Chanel Miller was incapacitated beyond the point of consent and Brock Turner knew that — despite what his testimony might tell you. He saw an opportunity to exercise his power as a white man and he took it, leaving lasting harm on a woman of color he doesn’t know.

In the aftermath of rape and sexual assault, his mugshot was in every headline and on every news report. Chanel Miller, in identity and aftermath, remanded faceless left with her perpetrator serving three months in jail with a six-month sentence from a judge who was later was recalled partly due to the public’s accusations of the negligence in the People v. Turner case.

In court, Chanel read a particularly powerful impact statement that went viral. I read the whole thing in one breathless sitting when it was first published. I remember my heart beating out of the chest as I read and read through Chanel’s (then “Emily Doe’s”) words to Brock Turner. “I am no stranger to suffering.”

She continues, “[Turner] made me a victim. In newspapers, my name was ‘unconscious intoxicated woman’, ten syllables, and nothing more than that. For a while, I believed that that was all I was. I had to force myself to relearn my real name, my identity. To relearn that this is not all that I am.”

Her words rang in my head and resonated with me. In leading Take Back the Night the past two years, sharing my own survivorship, and hearing the stories of other women of color that sense of erasure feels reclaimed in a way.

It’s not about the Brock Turners anymore and their faces and all their harm.

This is a list of questions Miller was asked at Turner’s trial. Read through them. Every single one.

How old are you? How much do you weigh? What did you eat that day? Well what did you have for dinner? Who made dinner? Did you drink with dinner? No, not even water? When did you drink? How much did you drink? What container did you drink out of? Who gave you the drink? How much do you usually drink? Who dropped you off at this party? At what time? But where exactly? What were you wearing? Why were you going to this party? What’ d you do when you got there? Are you sure you did that? But what time did you do that? What does this text mean? Who were you texting? When did you urinate? Where did you urinate? With whom did you urinate outside? Was your phone on silent when your sister called? Do you remember silencing it? Really because on page 53 I’d like to point out that you said it was set to ring. Did you drink in college? You said you were a party animal? How many times did you black out? Did you party at frats? Are you serious with your boyfriend? Are you sexually active with him? When did you start dating? Would you ever cheat? Do you have a history of cheating? What do you mean when you said you wanted to reward him? Do you remember what time you woke up? Were you wearing your cardigan? What color was your cardigan? Do you remember any more from that night? No?

Okay, well, we’ll let Brock fill it in.

Researcher of the Week: Ashley Majekodunmi

<Tagline>From the headlines! Immune responses to E-Cigarettes</Tagline>

After my freshman year, I wanted to get involved with research, so I emailed Dr. Lin and luckily, she was open to me joining her lab. I chose their lab because I was interested in the effects of drugs on the physiological parts of the body. My mentors are very supportive and they are always there when I need help.

How did you become interested in this project?

In my first year in the lab, I performed behavioral tests. I studied the effect of e-cigarette flavorings and their masking ability on nicotine-containing fluid with mice models. We saw the masking ability in the flavor menthol. After that experience, I was very interested in the effects of e-cigarette exposure on the tongue.

What has been the hardest part about your research/What was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The hardest part so far has been the cutting and embedding of tissue samples. It’s very easy to make a mistake, however I was able to overcome this with the guidance of my mentors.

What has been the most rewarding part?

I believe research is discovering the unknown and I get to help solve that unknown problem. I find the process of that discovery rewarding because the challenges and failures along the way make it worthwhile.

How will you disseminate your research?

I will present my research at URCAD and hopefully publish a paper in the future.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Find a research area that interests you and don’t be afraid to ask questions. I had so many questions when I first entered the lab and I was too afraid to ask my mentors. There is nothing wrong with asking questions.

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in pharmacology and become a biomedical scientist.

¡Habla Español con Amelia Agranovich!

<Tagline>Part of our "Get to Know" series for Tutor Appreciation Week</Tagline>

Happy Friday, Retrievers!

Today is the final day of National Tutor Appreciation Week! Thank you so much for reaching out to our tutors, SI PASS leaders, and peer mentors and letting them know they are appreciated and valued. And of course, this means we have our last entry in our Get to Know series!

For our final entry, we have Amelia Agranovich, one of our wonderful Spanish tutors! Amelia is a senior and has been studying Spanish for 8 years! I could go on, but let's get to the interview!

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Amelia and I’m a senior studying Geography and Environmental Studies as well as Global Studies. I’ve been studying Spanish for the past 8 years so by now I’ve reached some level of fluency.

How are you involved on campus?

On campus, I have worked as a tour guide, and I now work as a Spanish tutor and as a TA for the class Science of Water (SCI 100).

Why did you decide to become a tutor?

I decided to become a tutor because I love speaking and practicing Spanish, and I love helping others improve their own skills.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

My favorite thing about being a tutor is what I called the “clicking moment;" when a tricky concept suddenly makes sense to my student.

Why should students utilize tutoring?

With tutoring, my job is to help fill in the gaps. We all have our own ways of learning and understanding material, and some things come easier to us than others. I’m here to help with whatever feels most challenging to you, the student. Tutoring is an excellent way to review and learn material that you may find difficult in class, and it’s much more personal than the typical class experience. With tutoring, you and your tutor can focus together on exactly what you need help with and get down to the specifics.

How should students prepare for a tutoring session?

In order to prepare for a session, bring your materials like classwork or past homework to the session, and think of some questions that you may have for the tutor.

When and where can someone work with you through the Academic Success Center?

You can find me at the Academic Success Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 P.M., and Wednesdays at 10:00 A.M. Also, I’m in the Spanish lab with other tutors on Fridays, which runs from 2:00 P.M. till 5:00 P.M.

Gracias, Amelia for sharing your love of tutoring with us!

And that finishes out our Get to Know series! Make sure you use all of the great resources that the Academic Success Center has to offer and meet some of the great people that make it all happen. Don't forget to follow our myUMBC group for updates!

    accessible for others.

Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I discovered this position
through USAJOBS. I had previously received a lot of interview and resume
training through workshops and professional development sessions. I had my
resume reviewed by Jennifer Heilman from the Career Center and worked on a
30-second elevator pitch with her as well.

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization?

I have enjoyed being able to
learn more about the computer science industry and develop new skills
throughout my day-to-day work. I have also enjoyed meeting people who have
helped me foster these skills and be successful throughout the
    internship.

What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would advise students seeking employment to
network! Be sure to make those connections and gain knowledge by communicating
with other people. Sometimes the best way to get a foot in the door is to sneak
in with someone else. Also, the Career Center is a great tool to help jump start
your career, so take advantage of those resources!

Connect with your Professors!

Written by OAPA Peer Advisor, Jenika Brown

Stressed over your grade, or that oh-so
important GPA? You know who’s great at alleviating that stress…your professors.
It’s easy to forget that the person teaching in front of the class has been
through some variation of what you’re going through right now as a college
student. Your professors make the best study partners and are some of the best
relationships you could leave college with. Get to know your professor and
allow them to get to know you. All you have to do is connect. Want to know how?

How to Connect:

Set-up a Meeting

Utilize your
Professor’s office hours! The sole purpose of these hours are to help you
outside of class. Whether it be an assignment you’re confused about or a simple
check-in on your progress in the class, you’d be surprised at the kind of
insight you can gain from a one-on-one session.

Our
busy schedules as students don’t always allow for an in-person meeting…that’s
why we have technology! Corresponding through email, is better than no
correspondence at all. Anything you would ask in an in-person meeting can be
          translated to email.

*Helpful tip: A lot of
professors are willing to set-up meetings with you on days, and at times, outside
of their listed hours to better accommodate you. Some professors with inflexible
hours, are willing to have meetings via phone call. Just take the initiative to
          ask.

When to Connect:

Don’t
wait until your struggling in a course to set up a meeting. Connect early in
          the semester!

When
emailing, try to stay within the frame of typical business hours or their
office hours if possible—you may get a faster reply this way.

After You Connect:

Follow
up with your professor after your sessions. Whether it be assurance that you
are implementing their advice correctly—or to simply say thank you—following up
with your professor shows you care and makes the relationship one of
          reciprocity.

Network:

Attend
departmental events or other campus events your professors promote in class to
establish a relationship that surpasses the classroom, as well as discover new
          interests.

Tomorrow Oct 11th is National Coming Out Day!

<Tagline>Come out, come out, wherever you are!</Tagline>

October is LGBTQA+ History Month. We recognize National Coming Out Day (NCOD) on October 11th. NCOD was founded in 1988 to mark the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. This day is a reminder that - in the fight for equality - one of our most basic tools is the power of coming out and sharing our stories.

For over three decades, thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, asexual (LBGTQA) people and allies have celebrated NCOD through marches, informational sessions, photo-booths, speak-outs, parties and so much more. The overall goal is to show our families, friends, colleagues and the world that LGBTQA+ people are EVERYWHERE, living, loving and thriving.

Coming out - whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer - STILL MATTERS. One out of every two Americans has someone close to them who identifies as gay or lesbian. For transgender people, that number is only one in ten. Visibility creates advocates and is important in the continued fight for equality and representation. Moreover, sharing your story is an essential part of finding your community and being your true authentic self. (Adapted from the Human Rights Campaign, 2018).

Check out this video to understand the coming out process and what you can do as an ally.
