Practice Spanish with Madeline Dement Fridays 2-5p, Library
Tell us a little about yourself… 

My name is Madeline Dement, and I am a Sondheim scholar and global studies major with a focus in international development and minors in Spanish and international politics. I studied abroad with UMBC in Barranquilla, Colombia last summer where I was able to greatly improve my Spanish skills.

Tell us about how you are involved on campus. 
Along with tutoring for the LRC, I work closely with the Shriver Center on campus as the events coordinator for Refugee Youth Project’s College JUMP. In that role, I coordinate college-access workshops for high school refugees in the Baltimore area. I’m also the secretary of the Spanish Conversation Club!

How and why did you get involved in being a tutor? 
I became a tutor after being recommended by one of my Spanish professors. I was looking for ways to practice my Spanish even more, and I thought that I would be able to help students exceed in their Spanish classes with the strategies that I’ve cultivated in my years of learning the language.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor? 
I love when a student finally understands a topic that they’ve been struggling with and tells me about a time in class when they were successful with it!

Why should students utilize the tutoring?
Tutoring is a great way to reinforce whatever you’re learning in class, no matter what level you’re at. It can give you that little bit of extra time and guidance that you need to really understand a topic, and it gives you an opportunity to practice it with someone with more experience. Especially when learning a language, practice is the most important thing, so committing to tutoring is a great idea. 

What advice would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring session? 
Make a list of questions that you have and topics that you don’t understand in class to bring to your appointment. The tutor will structure the appointment based on whatever you want to work on, so the best thing to do is come with questions!

When and where can someone work with you through the Learning Resources Center? 
Students can make appointments for 50-minute tutoring appointments through the StudyTree app. If a student wants a weekly appointment, all they have to do is email the LRC! Along with private appointments with tutors, Spanish students can also visit the Spanish Lab on the first floor of the library from 2-5PM on Fridays for walk-in help!

We are excited to announce that UMBC leaders and Coach Ryan Odom have agreed in principle to contract amendments that will retain Coach Odom as the head of the UMBC men’s basketball team. We are pleased that he will continue to build on this season’s remarkable success. 

UMBC made history under Coach Odom’s guidance as the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed, with a decisive victory over Virginia on March 17th in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The week before, the Retrievers captured the America East Tournament title and secured a bid to the NCAA tournament for just the second time in school history.  

The Retrievers finished this season with a school record 25 wins (25-11), and in two years under Odom, have won seven postseason contests and compiled an overall record of 46-24. 

"We are very proud of Coach Odom and our basketball team. Coach Odom is an amazing educator and fine human being,” said President Freeman Hrabowski. “He appreciates the important relationship between our athletic and academic programs."

“I am so proud of our staff and players, and it’s been a remarkable journey that we set out on together,” Head Coach Ryan Odom said. “I am grateful to Dr. Hrabowski and Tim Hall for their confidence in our staff to continue to lead these young men during their time at UMBC. It’s a great honor to be a part of the UMBC community.”

The men’s basketball team will be honored this evening in Annapolis, beginning with a reception hosted by Governor Larry Hogan and concluding with visits to the Senate and House Chambers.

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Take Back the Night will take place on Thursday, April 12th and we need your help! Take Back the Night is a large event with many moving parts that calls on volunteers for support.

If you are interested in volunteering please visit our sign up page. Please sign up for shifts you know you are available for and keep in mind you will have to attend one training session prior to Take Back the Night which are also included on the page!

The Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities is pleased to announce its 2017-18 research fellows, principal investigator, Dr. Kindel Nash, Associate Professor of Education, and co-investigator, Joshua Michael, doctoral student, School of Public Policy.

Dr. Nash and Mr. Michael, in collaboration with families, preservice teachers, and staff (teachers, administrators, family liaisons) at Maree G. Farring Elementary/Middle School, will investigate the effects of a literacy intervention – Read Two Impress. The multi-year study will examine the intervention’s effects on struggling third grade readers when used by preservice teachers and students’ families. It will also explore the effects of implementing the intervention on preservice teachers’ and families’ sense of efficacy in supporting young students’ literacy development.

The Sherman Center award will allow Dr. Nash and Mr. Michael to expand knowledge about a research-based literacy practice while strengthening UMBC’s relationship with the Maree G. Farring Elementary/Middle School community. Please join us in congratulating them.

Physiciancy, Inc. is a physician-led medical scribe organization that provides a wide range of specialties and settings to physicians and providers.

Description: As a medical scribe, you will shadow physicians and other health care providers in the outpatient/office setting and assist with patient documentation. This includes documenting patient history, physical exam, tests, labs, and plans. You will learn to navigate electronic medical record systems. You will obtain significant clinical and patient exposure hours, useful for those interested in a healthcare related career and/or those students in a pre-professional program (pre-med, nursing, PA programs).

Compensation: Hourly

Hours: Part-time shifts are M-F daytime. No nights/no weekends. Must be able to commit to a minimum of two full days per week.

How to be a Better Ally: International Women of Color

This co-facilitated workshop series focuses on various underrepresented
and/or marginalized populations. Our goal of the series is to provide UMBC
community members with the basic practices for allyship, specifically for the
highlighted target population. After a brief discussion on the unique international women of color experience, this workshop session will highlight best ally practices to the target population.
