NCAA round two watch party and tournament tickets!

Our next game in the tournament is set for Sunday, March 18, 7:45 p.m. against no. 9 seed Kansas State. The game will be televised on TNT.

The university is in the process of finalizing plans for an on-campus watch party for UMBC students on Sunday, March 18. For details on the watch party, please check our 2018 NCAA Tournament information page. A list of viewing parties in the Baltimore area will also be published on the site once they become available.

Faculty, staff, students, and alumni interested in attending the second round game can purchase tickets here. Hotel and dining options in Charlotte, North Carolina can be found here.

UMBC’s Men’s Basketball is going to round two of the NCAA Basketball Tournament following the 74-54 win over the University of Virginia’s (UVA) Cavaliers Friday night! In historic fashion, UMBC upset no. 1 overall seed UVA, shocking the nation and earning the new name, UMBC: University of a Million Brackets Crushed.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

Helping Hand for Relief and Development is a global humanitarian relief and development organization responding to human sufferings in emergency and disaster situations around the world. In addition to their emergency relief efforts in natural or man-made disasters, they also work on long term relief and development programs. My internship was focused around the management aspect of the branch in Baltimore. My day-to-day responsibilities included coordinating volunteer sessions on a biweekly basis, managing incoming and outgoing shipment, maintaining an organized warehouse for the in-kind work and sending packaged material in containers to many countries including Pakistan, Syria and Rohingya. I also spoke at different events regarding the initiatives that this organization was taking.


Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about this position through an alumni network last Summer. A few of my friends had also interned at this organization and I had also volunteered here as well. When I found out that there was an opening I applied for the position in September.


What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoyed packing gifts for children in areas that have been affected by disasters. The idea that my work was able to bring some joy in the lives of children who have suffered through so much was very fulfilling. Furthermore, some of my colleagues went to some countries and distributed our gifts themselves. Knowing that gifts that were packed and organized by me actually got to the kids and seeing their videos just softened my heart so much and made me love my work even more.


How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe my work positively affected the lives thousands of people who have been affected by many disasters. As humans it is our responsibility to take care of other people, and I believe I was able to do that through my work.


What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Start looking for internships as soon as you can, and don't be shy. Most of the internships that I have had required me to step out of my comfort zone. Be brave and apply for anything that interests you. If you get rejected, it's okay. Try again. Rejection is not the same as failure, and you should never let it discourage you.

The Louis L. Kaplan Scholarship Fund was established in 1977 by the University of Maryland Baltimore County Student Government Association in recognition of Dr. Kaplan’s many contributions to UMBC during his tenure as Interim Chancellor.

It was Dr. Kaplan’s wish, when the fund was first established, that students who displayed academic promise be assisted financially in order to continue their education at UMBC.

Criteria for Selection: The purpose of the award is to recognize UMBC students with proven academic achievement (minimum 3.0 grade point average) who will hold junior or senior status (minimum 60 credits) the following fall (credits must reflect on transcript by the end of the application semester), demonstrate financial need, and have made valuable contributions to the UMBC community. While financial need will be a consideration, it WILL NOT be the deciding factor in granting the award (s).

Nomination and Award Process: Applications should be submitted to the Vice President for Student Affairs office. Selection of a student or students for the award will be made by the selection committee by June 15 each year; the award will be presented for the following fall semester by the first week in October.

The 2018-2019 Candidate Application for leadership positions within the Student Government Association (SGA) is now open! The elected positions include President, Executive Vice President, Treasurer, Vice President for Student Organizations, Senators, and Finance Board Representatives.
The application can be found here and is due on March 26, 2018 at 12pm, which is the Monday after spring break. This is a great way for students to advocate for issues they are passionate about!

Men's Basketball NCAA First Round Game Watch Party, Friday, March 16, 2018 at 9:00pm, Apt. Community Center

For the first time in 10 years, the UMBC Men's Basketball team has earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament! Our Retrievers take on #1 seed University of Virginia at 9:20pm on Friday, March 16. If you can't make it to Charlotte for the game, we have you covered with an on-campus Watch Party!!

Come join other Retriever fans for free food and lots of cheering! The Watch Party will begin at 9:00pm in the Apartment Community Center. Wear your best black and gold gear, and come ready to cheer on UMBC!
