We are offering an exciting summer program for undergraduate students to collaborate with scientists conducting ecological research.
Attached is a detailed program brochure as well as a few PowerPoint slides for presentation to interested students.
The strict deadline for this program is Friday February 2nd, 2018 @ 9:00am.
Applications are currently being accepted on-line and complete details are listed on our website.
Program dates for 2018 are May 21 – August 3, 2018.

Volunteers Needed for Winter Commencement
It’s time for Winter Commencement, and we need your help! We are looking for volunteers, both experienced and new, to help make this year’s ceremonies a great success for UMBC, our graduates, and their family and friends.
The Undergraduate Commencement is on Thursday, December 21 at 10 a.m. in the RAC, with the processional starting at 9:40 a.m. The Graduate Commencement is Wednesday, December 20 at 10 a.m. in the RAC, with the processional starting at 9:50 a.m. If you would like to volunteer to support either or both of these ceremonies, please fill out our commencement volunteer sign-up form. We will send you a confirmation email shortly after you submit your selection.
Volunteer training for both ceremonies is scheduled for Tuesday, December 19 at 2 p.m. in the RAC.

Top Five Tips:
- Create a master to-do list and a schedule for the remaining days in the semester. Break cumulative exams into smaller study units, which will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and help you monitor your progress daily.
- Just get started. Don’t wait until you feel like studying.
- Review your notes daily.
- Identify the format of the exam. Vary your study technique according to the type of exam.
- Predict possible questions. Review old tests, study guides or the course objectives.

Integrated Optics for Undergraduates – Native Americans (IOU-NA)
This program is designed for Native American students interested in participating in hands-on research opportunities in top laboratories in optics and photonics, as well as hydrology, astronomy, soil sciences, atmospheric sciences, and environmental sciences.

Minority Health Disparities (MHD)
MHD, funded by The University of Arizona, focuses on health issues that affect minority communities in a disproportionate manner. Research in Optics (RIO)
The UA College of Optical Sciences is internationally recognized for its innovative research programs. Our decorated faculty are constantly expanding the boundaries of optics knowledge. Biosphere 2 Research Experiences for Undergraduates
UA’s Biosphere 2 facility is the site of this summer research experience. By using a multidisciplinary approach (involving disciplines such as hydrology, geology, geochemistry, ecology, biology, physics, engineering, and atmospheric sciences) research teams focus on understanding how earth systems respond to environmental change. Open to freshman, sophomores, and juniors.
Electrical & Computer Engineering CAT Vehicle REU
This research experience for undergraduates (REU) is engaged in the myriad of applications that are related to autonomous ground vehicles. Each summer, 10 NSF-funded undergraduate students participate in an immersive research experience, sitting side-by-side with graduate researchers and working on one of the most compelling and complex applications of today: autonomous systems.

UMBC Winter Weather Policies and Procedures
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
As we enter the winter season, we ask that the UMBC community take a moment to familiarize themselves with our policies and procedures regarding weather-related closures and delays.
Campus Closure Procedure
The decision to close or delay opening campus is determined by many factors, including the type and severity of the forecast conditions; current conditions of campus roads, parking areas, and walkways; and weather and related road conditions in the surrounding area. Please note that the decision to close campus or open late applies to the main UMBC campus only. Students, faculty, and staff at other sites are recommended to contact their location directly to receive inclement weather updates:
If Inclement Weather Occurs
Be sure to use official sources of information, such as E2Campus text alerts, campus email, and the UMBC homepage for the most complete, accurate, and up-to-date information about any delays or closures. We also strongly recommend you review ourinclement weather and emergency closing policy to understand how a delay or closure impacts campus schedules, activities, and events. You can also see UMBC's snow removal plan to learn our process and prioritization for clearing roads, parking areas, and walkways.
Above all, we ask that you use personal judgment when traveling to and from campus. Weather and related road conditions are not the same in every area where students, faculty, and staff live. Consequently, the decision as to whether it is safe to travel must ultimately rest with each individual. Faculty are encouraged to arrange a system for communicating to their students should it be necessary to cancel class, and to be mindful that not all students may attend class.

Public Health Summer Research Program
University of Michigan Summer Enrichment Program
The University of Michigan’s Summer Enrichment Program in Health Management & Policy (UM SEP) provides students an opportunity to learn from administrators and policy makers in the health care field, under their direct supervision. In its 33rd consecutive year, the program now has over 650 alumni, with notable positions in hospital administration, government, policy, consulting, higher education, and research. Our program evaluations are consistently in the 95th percentile and higher. We are confident that through this experiential program, students will become familiar with health management and policy and consider it as a career option.
Program Dates: May 30 - July 27, 2018
Benefits:
- Stipend: The tax-free stipend of $3,000 is paid in three parts: at the beginning, middle, and end of the summer.
- Transportation: The UM SEP pays for students' round-trip travel from their home or school to Ann Arbor. The program also provides rental cars (and their fuel costs) for students to carpool to and from their internship sites every weekday.
- Housing: UM SEP students live together in a University of Michigan Residence Hall for the duration of the program. A Resident Assistant, typically a former SEP student who is entering the Health Management and Policy master's degree program at Michigan, provides professional, social, and emotional support.
- Food: Students receive $250 towards the cost of on-campus food during the program. Because of their work schedules, UM SEP participants cannot often eat in the dining halls on campus, but many nearby restaurants accept the provided "BlueBucks."
- GRE Course: The UM SEP provides a GRE course from Kaplan or Princeton Review taught just for UM SEP participants on Sundays throughout the summer. The program also pays for course materials.

Residential Halls close Wed. Dec. 20th at 8:00pm
Are you looking forward to your student returning home for the holidays? Here are a couple of tips for a smooth move-out! Residents are expected to check out within 24 hours of their last final exam (or equivalent). Before your student leaves for the semester break please have them review the following checklist: https://reslife.umbc.edu/housing/important-dates/.
If your student is not returning to UMBC/housing for the Spring Semester contact Residential Life for a housing license release petition. Call for questions 410-455-8832.
