Richard's research will explore the cultural and linguistic approach that was used to analyze the effect that speeches by members of the right-wing Tea Party Caucus have had on conservative political discourse. The rhetoric of these politicians after their ascendance in the 2010 congressional elections was compared to the rhetoric used by John McCain, the Republican nominee in 2008, and Donald Drumpf, the Republican nominee in 2016 and current POTUS. This analysis could explain the mind set of the oval office.

Dear members of the UMBC community,

Please join us as we celebrate the career of Dr. Diane Lee, Vice Provost and founding Dean of Undergraduate Education, and wish her the best in her retirement. The celebration event will take place on Monday, February 20 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the 7th floor of the Albin O. Kuhn Library. Refreshments will be provided.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP using our online registration form, or contact Diana Smith, dlsmith@umbc.edu.

For the past 30 years, Dr. Lee has served the UMBC community with enthusiasm, integrity, compassion, and vision. She has made a profound difference to the lives of past and current students, staff, and faculty, and her extraordinary legacy will mark the lives of members of our community for years to come. She has been a mentor, advisor, supporter, friend, colleague, thinker, advocate, administrator, teacher, and builder—playing all of these roles with unique grace, kindness, and wisdom.

During her time at UMBC she was honored as a Presidential Teaching Professor; served as a Vice Provost and then as the founding Dean of Undergraduate Education; and oversaw or established signature UMBC initiatives such as the First Year and Transfer Seminars, Supplemental Instruction, and Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD). These accomplishments, and many others, are grounded on Dr. Lee’s passion for supporting all students in reaching their academic and professional goals, and on her remarkable ability to inspire all around her through her work, generosity, and collaborative spirit.

We hope you will join us in expressing our deep gratitude for all Dr. Lee has done for the UMBC community, and in wishing her well in her future endeavors.

    Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Kevin Eckert, Professor and Chair of Sociology, Anthropology, and Health Administration & Policy, has been named the 2016-17 recipient of the Marilyn E. Demorest Award for Faculty Advancement. This annual award is provided through an endowment established by Marilyn E. Demorest, Professor Emerita of Psychology and former Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, to support the advancement of all UMBC faculty members in their academic careers; to facilitate their professional development; and to recognize their contributions to faculty advancement and success at UMBC.

Dr. Eckert is recognized for his generosity in sharing his time, expertise, and resources to foster faculty productivity and leadership and to support and grow collaborative, interdisciplinary research. Dr. Eckert's open approach to his research projects has provided new tenure-track faculty members with valuable collaborative research experience on many high-profile National Institute of Health (NIH) grants.

Dr. Eckert is also a strong advocate for faculty development, often dedicating resources directly from the chair's office to ensure faculty members can participate in workshops and trainings and present at national academic conferences. He also was responsible for securing student research assistants for each department faculty member to create learning and research opportunities for faculty members at all points in their careers. Dr. Eckert's support of professional development has led to a greater focus on leadership, resulting in many departmental faculty taking on roles as leaders across campus in areas such as university Strategic Planning, the Institutional Review Board, and the Research Council.

During his tenure as the Demorest awardee, Dr. Eckert will lead a series of seminars that provide insights into mentorship as a multidimensional process, with a particular focus on the development of successful, federally funded collaborative research proposals and engagement in academic leadership. Topics include:

“I am honored to receive this award made possible by a generous gift from Dr. Marilyn Demorest,” says Dr. Eckert. “Over the course of the next few semesters I plan to offer several seminars for faculty that focus on collaborative research addressing such topics as developing successful, federally funded collaborative research proposals and lessons learned from conducting large collaborative studies.”

UMBC Diversity and Inclusion Resources

Inclusive excellence is a hallmark of UMBC and a foundational value of our community. We take great pride in the diversity of experience, background, and thought represented by our campus community and the respectful ways in which our students, faculty, and staff engage the civic issues being debated in our country today.

In this time of change, we have received many requests for information and guidance. We are pleased to introduce several new campus resources developed in collaboration with the University Steering Committee and other campus groups:

Information Regarding Recent Executive Actions: UMBC’s Office of International Education Services has developed a set of resources/FAQs to offer guidance for UMBC community members regarding President Trump's recent executive order on immigration. In addition, President Hrabowski has joined other college presidents and the American Council on Education in sending a letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security expressing concerns about the executive order.

The Diverse Classroom: This new Faculty Development Center resource page is designed to assist faculty in facilitating difficult classroom conversations and harnessing UMBC's diversity to create vibrant learning environments that both challenge and support every student.

Appreciating Differences in a Changing World (Feb. 13): The campus community is invited to this interactive concert, which will explore powerful questions through music and discussion. Singer-songwriter and trainer Bob Sima will lead the community in exercises to increase and improve self-awareness, interpersonal communication, and appreciation of differences.

The UMBC Freedom Seder, hosted by UMBC Hillel, the vice president for Student Affairs, and other campus partners, will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 7 – 9 p.m.Participants will celebrate the promise of freedom and learn about the diverse personal narratives of the UMBC community. The event will also honor the leaders, both past and present, who have fought and continue to fight for an egalitarian society. A certified kosher meal will be served.

Campus leaders also have joined together to create a new webpage that gathers a wide range of resources to support and celebrate diversity and inclusion, from campus-based organizations and services to external resources offered by nonprofit and government agencies. We know that the list is not exhaustive, and if you know of any resources that we have not included, please email us at inclusion@umbc.edu.

We are encouraged by the substantive programming and resources organized to support our students, faculty, and staff. We are confident UMBC will continue to be a model for inclusion—not because all members of our diverse community always agree with one another, but because we willingly engage with difficult issues and are respectful in our differences

Thank you for your commitment to our mission and for all that you do to strengthen our community.
