    <div><strong>David Silberberg, Large-Scale Analytic Systems Group Supervisor</strong></div>
    <div><strong><em>John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab</em></strong></div>
    <div>Dr. David Silberberg is the supervisor of the Large-Scale Analytic Systems Group of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Dr. Silberberg  has extensive background in large-scale data systems and data science. Special areas of expertise include large-scale computing systems (Hadoop ecosystem), machine learning, graph analytics, distributed database systems, semantic technologies, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Silberberg also teaches the Large-Scale Database Systems course at the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering for Professionals Program.  Dr. Silberberg has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park and Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Computer Science &amp; Engineering  from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.</div>

    <div><strong>Rich Giomundo, Chief Technology Officer </strong></div>
    <div><strong><em>IntelliGenesis LLC</em></strong></div>
    <div>Rich leads the product, engineering, and research teams at IntelliGenesis. Rich is the principal architect and data scientist for nearly all of IntelliGenesis’ machine learning projects. Previous and ongoing topics include: deep learning and genetic algorithms in network defense, natural language processing analytics for multi-lingual unstructured text, and graph-based algorithms for large-scale social media analysis. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Computer Science from University at Buffalo.</div>

    <div><strong>Jim Kukla, Chief Technology Officer</strong></div>
    <div><strong><em>RedShred LLC</em></strong></div>
    <div>As CTO and co-founder, Jim Kukla has built RedShred - an AI-powered service that helps business development professionals find better opportunities faster by eliminating hours of needless reading. Before founding RedShred, he worked in various development, research, and teaching roles in network security, telecom, earth science and academia.  Jim has a BS and an MS in Computer Science from UMBC.</div>

    <div><strong>Mohammed Eslami, Chief Data Scientist</strong></div>
    <div><strong><em>Netrias</em></strong></div>
    <div>Mohammed Eslami, Ph.D. has extensive experience as a technical manager and subject matter expert in modeling complex, physical, dynamical systems in a variety of domains including optics, electromagnetics, and cognitive systems, as well as extracting insights from large sets of heterogeneous data in domains such as cybersecurity, BioMedical research, video, and image processing. Dr. Eslami is currently the Chief Data Scientist and Co-Founder of Netrias where he is responsible for establishing best practices, mentoring and training interns and new employees, and developing and executing a strategy to apply advanced approaches and techniques to include HDFS, Spark, and/or other cloud and High-Performance Computing Platforms, in the acquisition, management, and analysis of large sets of data for our partners and collaborators.</div>

    <div><strong>Zachary Miller, Research Staff</strong></div>
    <div><strong><em>CyberPoint International</em></strong></div>
    <div>Mr. Miller is a security researcher with CyberPoint International, LLC. His areas of research are primarily in program analysis and the classification of malicious network traffic. Mr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Maryland and is currently finishing his Master of Science in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology.</div>

  <Title>Women&#8217;s Center 25 Then vs. Now #7: Documenting Our History at Critical Social Justice</Title>

We’re excited to share our important milestone with <a href="http://50.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s 50th Anniversary </a>and will be celebrating throughout the year with the rest of campus! We were inspired by Special Collections archival project <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC’s 50th</a> and decided to do our own digging into the Women’s Center archives. Over the course of the year, we’ll be sharing 25 “Then vs Now” archives to celebrate the origin and evolution of the Women’s Center at UMBC.</p>
    <p>It’s been a while since our last post because we were prepping for <a href="https://critsocjustice.wordpress.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Critical Social Justice.</a> Consequently, this week we’re featuring the awesome posters + a Prezi presentation student staff put together highlighting the Women’s Center history which was showcased at this week’s Critical Social Justice <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/womenscenter/events/44792" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">event </a>addressing diversity and inclusion within higher education.</p>
    <p>The posters are hanging up in the Women’s Center right now so stop by to check them out. In the meantime, here’s some photos of the posters Shira and Michael made and the link to Daniel’s Prezi Presentation. Prachi also made a really cool zine about our history that we’ll be adding to the 50th Anniversary time capsule that we’re working to get online. In the meantime, you can pick up a hard copy the next time you visit the Women’s Center.</p>

    <p>You can check out Dan’s cool Prezi presentation, <em><a href="https://prezi.com/cge5j6ag2qu3/historical-foundations-of-the-women039s-center-at-umbc/?utm_campaign=share&amp;utm_medium=copy" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Historical Foundations of the Women’s Center at UMBC</a></em>, that explores the evolution of women’s centers and women’s movements from a holistic perspective which he was then able to connect to the programming and services our specific Women’s Center has offered over the years.</p>

    <p>In the spirit of my friend, who gave us the glorious name ‘Slaying on the Weekly’, every week I will be bringing you some interesting, funny or thought-provoking content from the internet! Be sure to join us next week for more and continue to slay!</p>
    <p><strong>Things you should know:</strong></p>
    <p>Believe it or not, voting happens in a few very short weeks. Early <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+vote#q=early+voting+maryland" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">voting begins </a>November 3rd. The presidential election is important, but so are the 469 Congressional seats up for re-election! That’s a lot! Stay informed and get there to vote!</p>

    <p>We’re only 3 days from Halloween!!! For those that are going out, be safe!     <p><strong>UMBC Happenings:</strong></p>
    <p>This week was Critical Social Justice! There were a ton of amazing events all pertaining to our theme, ‘Home’. It was an amazing time, especially with our keynote speaker Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha. If you missed the events, some of them are available to watch on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/critsocjustice/?fref=ts" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Critical Social Justice Facebook Page</a>. Even though Critical Social Justice is over, we want to encourage all of you to continue to be critical and cognizant of how UMBC is or isn’t a home to the students, faculty and staff it houses!</p>
    <p>Also, the theme of <em><a href="https://critsocjustice.wordpress.com/2016/07/25/critical-social-justice-home-october-24th-28th/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Home</a></em> is really resonating with many of us in the Women’s Center as we watch and pay attention to what is happening at <a href="http://www.democracynow.org/topics/dakota_access" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Standing Rock</a>. We’re working on a round-up of resources we’ll post on the <a href="https://critsocjustice.wordpress.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Critical Social Justice blog</a> so you can learn more about the Native American and indigenous people in America, the water protectors, the social justice issues related to the Dakota Access Pipeline.</p>

    <h4>Green Dot is built on the premise that in order to measurably reduce the perpetration of power-based personal violence, including sexual violence, partner violence, or stalking, a cultural shift is necessary.  In order to create a cultural shift, a critical mass of people will need to engage in a new behavior or set of behaviors that will make violence less sustainable within any given community.  The “new behavior” is a green dot.</h4>

    <div>This extremely interactive session is great for you and your friends to:</div>

    <li>Understand the impact of power-based personal violence on campus and in various communities</li>

          <div>The <a href="https://studentlifeumbc.wufoo.com/forms/2017-strive-participant-application/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">application</a> for UMBC's STRiVE leadership retreat is now available. There will be two STRiVE sessions in 2017: one during winter break (January 9-13) and one during spring break (March 20-24). The same application works for both sessions.</div>
          <div><br></div>
          <div>Calling STRiVE a "leadership retreat" is like calling your favorite meal "food." It's not inaccurate, but it doesn't fully capture the warmth, intensity and magic! Students returning from STRiVE often describe it as a truly transforming, and even years later will identify STRiVE as their most important UMBC learning experience, and as the moment UMBC became a true home for them. </div>
          <div><br></div>
          <div>Well over 99.5% of all students ever to participate in STRiVE have said they would recommend STRiVE to a friend.</div>
          <div><br></div>
          <div>The two of us will be among the STRiVE coaches, so this is also your chance to spend five days with us (and roughly 55 other UMBC students and five staff members)! We love participating in STRiVE because of the opportunity to connect with and learn from the participants. No two STRiVEs are alike, but they're all powerful and amazing.</div>

  <Title>Get to know a Social Sciences Tutor: Dana Kobrin</Title>

    <p><strong>Tell us a little about yourself…</strong></p>
    
    <p>Hey! My name is Dana Kobrin, I’m
    from Silver Spring, MD, and I’m a Psychology major and Sociology minor.  I am a Resident Assistant in Pataspco Hall,
    I’m a tutor (obviously haha), I’m the Treasurer of Psi Chi, the psychology
    honor society, check us on myUMBC!), and I’m a Research Assistant in the
    Cardiovascular Behavioral Medicine lab with Dr. Waldstein.</p>
    
    <p><strong>How long have you been a tutor?  </strong></p>
    
    <p>I became a tutor through the
    Psychology Peer Mentor program, so this is my 3<sup>rd</sup> semester as an
    appointment tutor, and my 4<sup>th</sup> in the Peer Mentor program. </p>
    
    <p><strong> How and why did you get involved
    in being a tutor?</strong></p>
    
    <p>Honestly, my first semester here I
    was struggling academically. I didn’t have the best study habits from high
    school, and was so excited for college I lost track of the school side. One of
    my professors suggested tutoring to help academically and learn study tips, and
    I loved it. I learned how to study, and enjoyed studying in groups and teaching
    people, so after my freshman year I was asked to join the LRC and happily
    accepted.</p>
    
    <p><strong>What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?</strong></p>
    
    <p>When a student truly learns
    something from class material, or learns something about their study habits and
    themselves. I’ve tutored students for class they are only taking for graduation
    requirement, as well as students needing support in their major, and every time
    I see a smile or excitement about the material it reminds me why I tutor.</p>
    
    <p><strong>Why should students utilize the tutoring?</strong></p>
    
    <p>I was struggling academically for
    my first semester or two and really needed support academically, and to learn
    sometimes you just have to sit down, put music on, and just study. Tutoring not
    only helped my GPA and major choice, it also taught me how to get my work done,
    procrastinate less, and that I love teaching and helping other students.</p>
    
    <p><strong>What advice would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring
    session?</strong></p>
    
    <p>1. If you cannot make your
    appointment, PLEASE give your tutor at least a day an advance, or in
    emergencies tell us ASAP. There are so many other students that could benefit
    from that time. </p>
    
    <p>2. Don’t go into the tutoring
    appointment and expect me to do your homework for you or give you the answers,
    I’m not google. Tell your tutor what exactly you need help in, and in most
    cases the tutor can tailor to exactly what kind of support you need. <strong></strong></p>
    
    <p><strong>When and where can someone work with you through the Learning Resources
    Center?</strong></p>
    
    <p>I’m a social science and foreign
    language tutor, so I tutor Psyc 100, 200, 210, and 285, Socy 101, and Hebrew
    101 and 102. If you are presently in any of these classes I still have slots
    open so apply through the ASC website and I’ll help you. </p>

  <Title>INDS 410</Title>
  <Tagline>A winter course that helps you market yourself to employers!</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>I’m not exactly sure where the time has gone, but registration for winter classes is already here. If any of you are worried about finding a summer internship, or even wondering how to get started on your resume, cover letter, or any of your other professional documents, consider taking INDS 410!</span></p>
    <p><span>This one-credit, pass/fail course will get you motivated and prepared to land your dream internship. You will develop a polished resume/cover letter, identify target internships, and practice talking about your strengths in a supportive environment. You'll also receive individualized feedback from a career professional, peers, and visiting employers. </span></p>
    <p><span>The class is open to all UMBC students, regardless of major, class, or career interests. That sounds pretty cool to me. You never know what kinds of interesting discussions you can have with people who have completely different interests than you. </span></p>
    <p><span>There is only one assignment attached to the class, an Internship Strategy Book that is geared towards helping you identify your strengths and potential internship opportunities, tailoring your experiences to those specific opportunities, and communicating your attributes to employers.  </span></p>
    <p><span>Still not sure if you want to take the class? If you’re on the fence, here are a list of questions that you will answer during the course of the class:</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><p><span>What strengths do I possess?</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>What kind of internship do I want?</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Where do I want to intern, and how will I apply?</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>How will I stand out on paper?</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>How will I stand out online?</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>How will I stand out in person?</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Who is already in my network, and who do I want in my network?</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Where do I start?</span></p></li>
    </ul>
    <p><span>If you’re interested in knowing the answers to any of these questions, this is the class for you. </span></p>
    <p><span>As college students, it’s fairly expected that we complete an internship during our college careers. This is the perfect way to learn how to market yourself and your experiences to get that internship. </span></p>
    <p><span>If you want to get a head start on your Internship Search, come to the Career Center and speak with a member of our Internships and Employment team!     <p><span>Finding the perfect internship for you can take a lot of time and research. Learn how to navigate UMBCWorks, how to meet employers on campus, and strategies to find jobs and internships. Those are only a few of the tools the website offers. </span></p>
    <p><span>I know sometimes it seems like classes like these aren’t worth the effort, but getting credit and understanding how to use your strengths to market yourself is a great way to have a productive winter break!</span></p>
