The Price of Home

A blog reflection by Joe Levin-Manning, Graduate Coordinator for LGBTQ Programs

In our society today there are numerous people without the tangible home that we label as homeless or home-challenged; but have we thought about those that are lacking home security/stability? Many vulnerable groups are on the verge or edge of losing the homes they have currently. These people include (but aren’t limited to) the LGBTQ community, lower income persons/families, and immigrants. These groups are often the subject of discrimination just because they exist.

Home is usually defined as a place a person goes for shelter, for safety, and for a sense of normalcy. Home is something we think of as both a literal and a figurative place in our society. But what truly makes a home a home? How is it decided who gets a home and who doesn’t? How do you get to keep a home that you may have created or earned for yourself?

For many LGBTQ individuals, myself included, you worry what will happen when you come out to someone. Whether that person is a family member, a friend, a colleague, or a boss. It is a nerve-wracking experience that can have dire consequences. For those that are unaware, there are many intangible things on the line in addition to all of the tangible one. It goes beyond the loss of a place to call home, which is a traumatic experience in its own right. You start to lose your self of self.

For many of us, so much of who we are is made up or defined by our homes. Your parents/families are the first to give you a set of values to believe in. At home is when you are taught to feel safe and comfortable. The security that you feel at home is supposed to make you feel strong and confident. However, these things are only true if you feel that you belong there. Even if you are living in a home you may not feel at home if you are not able to be truly and completely yourself. In those situations, is that really a home? Is this a place that you are meant to be? Many are forced to say yes because you need the physical, financial, and practical support that is associated with it. Like many others, I did not know how I could or would afford to finish college without the support of my “family”. In this situation, you are forced to hide who you are or to be someone other than yourself.

For some, coming out is a story of acceptance, love, and familial warmth. For others, coming out is a story of pain, longing, loss, and hope. The pain of rejection that stings to the very depth of your soul. The longing for an idea of how things could have been if you were born any other way. The loss of the future you thought you had or the stability and support you need. The hope you force yourself to believe in until you finally find the place you were meant to be full of love, laughter, and support. The journey and the struggles that one faces along this path will be different from the next person but all have one thing in common. They all shape us to be something more than we thought or imagined and it is the price we paid for our sense of home today.

(“Family” – the person you are related to by blood or law. Not to be confused with family – those that you chose to be members of your support network.)

Hi Retrievers! This is a new feature we're starting on our myUMBC page where we highlight a class at UMBC and tell you guys what resources there are to help you do your best.

PHYS 111, or Basic Physics I, is one of the largest courses at UMBC. It's targeted primarily towards students in health related sciences (i.e.: Biology and Psychology), and it also satisfies requirements for medical and dental schools. Given that this course is so important, there are many support programs on campus to help students succeed!

SI-PASS: Supplemental Instruction at UMBC are Peer Assisted Study Sessions where an SI PASS leader guides students through study sessions. Students review the material with an SI PASS leader who has not only passed the course, but also attends the course with the students in order to make sure the material being reviewed is accurate and current. SI PASS is great for reinforcing and solidifying concepts, and SI PASS leaders also conduct exam reviews before tests. You can find out times for SI PASS on our website.

LRC Math Lab: The Math Lab offers walk in help for students in PHYS 111 every Monday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. This is ideal for students who just have a few questions about a certain concept. It can also be used as a quick prep before a test. The Math Lab is located on the first floor of the Library.

LRC Appointment Tutoring: Students who want help in PHYS 111 can sign up for weekly, small group tutoring with a certified peer tutor! This is recommended for students who could benefit from consistent support in the course. You can sign up for weekly appointment tutoring on our website, or you can click the sign up button on our Facebook page!

PHYS 111 TAs and LAs: Teaching Assistants and Learning Assistants are great resources both inside and outside of the classroom. Never be afraid to ask for help!

Have you taken PHYS 111? What helped you do your best? Tell us in the comments below?

Graduate School

  <Tagline>Have questions about graduate school?</Tagline>

I have wanted to go to law school since I was 15 years old. I had this amazing Government and Politics teacher that made me excited to go to class (even if it was at 7:25 AM), that made me want to learn. A first for me, a high school student who absolutely dreaded waking up at 6 AM.

After college, my sister went on to attend law school and her experiences affirmed my desire to continue my legal studies after I graduate.

However, for a lot of us, our paths are not as determined. We wonder should we go straight into the job force, is it worth spending the exorbitant amounts of money that graduate school requires, or we’re not sure what specific course of study we want to pursue after we graduate. Maybe you’re worried about the time it would take to complete a degree.

Some graduate programs are long, and maybe you’re interested in a long graduate program, but you don’t want to commit such a large chunk of your life to it right now. But if you’re even slightly considering graduate school, then check out The Career Center’s website for some guidance.

The website provides students with a number of different resources to help guide them through the process of looking at applying for graduate school. Here are some of the things it can help you with:

Making a timeline. If you already know what kind of professional school you want to attend (like medical, or dental), there are also timelines geared specifically towards those.

If you’re unsure of whether or not graduate school is for you, there’s a page that provides you with some questions to think about when you’re making that decision.

If you want to go to graduate school, but you’re not sure about going immediately after graduating, here’s a link that can explain how a gap year works.

Are you concerned about the cost of graduate school? I know I am. Here’s some information on how you can fund your education.

These are only a few of the resources that the website provides. Be sure to peruse it, there is tons of valuable information!

Getting to talk to graduate school representatives can also be extremely helpful in understanding where you want to take your career. They can provide you with real world examples and relay their personal experiences.

On Monday, October 31, from 12-1:30 PM in UC 312, Johns Hopkins University’s graduate admissions will be holding an information session. Attend this information session to explore the array of full-time master’s, doctoral, and MD programs available to you at Johns Hopkins University. You’ll also be able to ask any questions you may have about the graduate school!

Representatives from each of the following Schools/Areas will be on hand:

Advanced Academic Program (Krieger School of Arts and Sciences)

School of Advanced International Studies

Carey Business School

School of Education

School of Medicine

School of Nursing

Bloomberg School of Public Health

This is the perfect time to network and get one foot in the door. Impressing one of these representatives can give you a step up from other applicants, so definitely try to take time out of your busy day and attend the information session!

Making life decisions is scary and difficult, but if you take the time to do your research and learn about all of your options, you might find yourself choosing a path that will allow you to do what you’re passionate about!

Some Tips, Tricks, and Common Sense Suggestions for your Student!

Your student's academic advisor is a vital member of their support team at UMBC. Often an advisor is a professor in your student's major department, but could be a professional advisor (full-time advisor).  If your student has any doubt at all about WHO their advisor is, here is a link to Departmental advising info for all majors:

Main Campus:

Shady Grove:

WHEN would it make sense for your student to see their advisor?

The short answer is:  EARLY!  Students may see an advisor as early as October 10th for matters related to Spring 2017 registration.

Are there things other than registration students should be discussing with their advisor?

Absolutely yes, although sometimes students forget to ask for help in these other areas.  Other topics include such “important but not urgent” issues as:

Is this the right major for me?

Which track or concentration within the major is best for me?

Should I pursue a minor or certificate in addition to my major?

How do I become involved in undergrad research, become an undergrad teaching assistant, formulate a study abroad plan consistent with my major, or find relevant internship opportunities?

Can an advisor help if your student encounters academic or other difficulties?

Yes, academic advisors can consult with students if they are struggling with a course or courses (in addition to the course instructors).   The advisor may have very helpful suggestions, such as study strategies,  schedule adjustments, ways to get help from tutors or advanced students, and more. Academic advisors can also make referrals to offices on campus such as Residential Life, Counseling Services, or the Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising.  Academic advisors can be the first point of contact for many issues that arise for undergraduate students.

TIPS FAMILIES CAN SHARE TO ENSURE THE NEXT ADVISING SESSION IS ENGAGING AND REWARDING:

Encourage your student to make an appointment to see their advisor rather than “dropping by” their office. Most advisors at UMBC wear many hats (teaching, researching, writing grants, serving on committees, etc.) while also managing a considerable number of advisees. Making an appointment not only gives them time to prepare, it also extends a professional courtesy to their advisor so he or she can be better prepared to help. Sending an e-mail to make an appointment usually works although each department may have its own rituals and procedures.

BE PREPARED.  Students should review their degree audit, transfer credit report in advance and go with a list of topics/questions to cover. Moreover, students may also want to use our new Academic Pathways resource for comprehensive academic planning.  If students are going to discuss their schedule for the next semester, encourage them to take a list of courses they are interested in.

Encourage students to always keep their appointments!  Make this one of their highest priorities!

Listen carefully and take notes!  Students should never go to an advising session without the capacity to take notes, whether with pen and paper or on laptop.

IN CONCLUSION

Like all important relationships, a students advising relationship will benefit from purposeful nurturing.   If they are prepared, attentive, and keep appointments, this will go a very long way toward fostering a strong bond with their academic advisor that will lead to very productive exchanges:

Mapping Home: UMBC Campus Maps

When I was little, I used to draw maps of my neighborhood. Once I was done with my neighborhood, I’d move onto creating maps for make believe neighborhoods including everything I thought a community should have – homes, trees, a playground and hospital, a library.

When the Critical Social Justice planning team picked the theme of Home this year, just a few short weeks later, the City Paper published its “Maps” issue. The front cover immediately caught my attention and took me back to my childhood of my own map making days.

As our intro blog post to this year’s theme states: “In honor of UMBC’s 50th Anniversary, this year’s CSJ theme of Home recognizes UMBC as a home to many of us. As we celebrate and contemplate UMBC as a home for learning, activism, and social change, we embrace the opportunity to invest ourselves in creating meaningful change here on campus in addition to taking our newly gained insights and knowledge with us back home, wherever that may be.” With this in mind, as we read through the City Paper maps issue, we wondered what it would be like to create our own maps of UMBC.

Since the fall semester began, the Women’s Center Advisory Board and student staff have all made their own campus maps. This week all of the Women’s Center discussion groups will also be creating their campus maps. When creating our maps, we asked each person to consider specific prompts such as: What is your favorite place on campus? Where can you can find others in your community or get your needs met? What is something you want to change?

It’s been fascinating to see the ways in which home has shown up in each of our maps and the ways in which challenges and complexities of home present themselves as well. Each person’s map tells a different story about who they are and what their experience is like at UMBC. It had allowed for us to have conversations of belonging and mattering, discussions of accessibility, environmental justice, and activism, as well as reflections on ways to bridge our home at UMBC with our other homes to include Baltimore.

What would your campus map look like?

Stop by Main Street this Wednesday, October 19th from 11:30-1:30pm to create your UMBC map and pick up a Critical Social Justice: Home events calendar.

Campus maps will be displayed at the “Who Gets a Home on College” CSJ event on Thursday, October 27th which will take place on Main Street from 11:30-1:30pm.
