A weekly round-up curated by Women’s Center staff member, Michael Jalloh Jamboria

In the spirit of my friend, who gave us the glorious name ‘Slaying on the Weekly’, every week I will be bringing you some interesting, funny or thought-provoking content from the internet! Be sure to join us next week for more and continue to slay!

This week’s news:

This week I will be focusing on the protest surrounding the death of Keith Lamont Scott. Anti-police brutality protests have started in cities all over the country, the loudest taking place in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is now in a state of emergency.

I also just read this important and powerful post by fellow UMBC Retriever, Vanessa… please read it and consider the ways in which Black Issues Are Retriever Issues.

Equally important, I want to make sure we are all taking care of ourselves. Engage in whatever self-care practices make you feel the best. Express and allow yourself to feel the emotions you have!

Finally, the Women’s Center and the Mosaic Center will be holding a community safe space on Tuesday 9/27. Meet in the Mosaic. Affected communities and allies are encouraged to come!

Until next week!

Intern of the Week: Hector Barrera for Fin. Econ/HAPP

<Tagline>Learn more about Hector's experience at The Nielsen Company!</Tagline>

Name: Hector Barrera

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: The Nielsen Company

Position Title: Financial Leadership Program (FLP) Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Financial Economics and Health Administration and Policy

Expected Graduation Year: May 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I worked as a Financial Leadership Program (FLP) intern in NYC for The Nielsen Company. My responsibilities included developing and implementing price table analyses for annual Pricing Guidelines review and updates for the Watch Business (National and Local TV). I used Excel to identify current fees, and variance to current price guidelines, to develop recommendations for pricing increase/re-benchmarking for all measurement services, Nielsen information and technology services. Toward the end of my internship, I presented a specific range of findings to the Chief Financial Officer of Nielsen, in order to introduce recommended pricing for some of Nielsen's local and national products.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I obtained this internship through the services of the UMBC Career Center and specifically, through the Fall 2015 UMBC Career Fair where I submitted my resume and found out a little bit more about the company. I went in for an on-campus interview the next day and interviewed with a Nielsen finance manager. Then, I was contacted for two additional interviews (conducted on the phone) with two HR representatives including the FLP program manager.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Brainstorming and formulating a methodology to analyze the Nielsen data and recommend pricing for a total of 12 Nielsen local and national products.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

My pricing recommendations were reviewed by Finance and Client Services leads and will be further discussed for business implementation in September.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Nielsen really cares about getting to know you and your experiences. Show in the interview what you have gained from those experiences and communicate them effectively. Also, show that you are confident and proud of your accomplishments.

Queering Your Queue

A short reflection by student staff member Shira Devorah ( She/Her or They/Them)

I really love queer media. I’ve probably watched most of the movies in the “Gay and Lesbian” category on Netflix, as long as they didn’t look too dull or exploitative. There are some really fantastic and challenging shows and movies available at the click of a button. Why am I so drawn to television shows with women kissing, to movies with actual trans actresses playing trans women? I know I’m not the only queer woman who revels in the opportunity to see a new lesbian drama. Why is this?

Well, it all boils down to one thing: The need for representation. The queer community is constantly portrayed by the media through stereotypes and tropes that are incredibly harmful and inconsistent with the realities of our queer lives. This article from the queer- woman’s website Autostraddle recently went viral – because it listed all 162 (and counting) dead lesbian and bisexual women killed on television and how they died.

The post circulated widely using the hashtag “bury your gays,” which was created after a beloved lesbian character from The 100 was killed off as a cheap plot device – a trope all too common in any media that portrays queer women. While I never really watched The 100, I understand what it feels like when a fan favorite lesbian meets an early demise.

I remember the first time I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer all the way through. I had the complete series box set growing up and watched BtVS religiously. I was heartbroken when (spoiler) Tara, one of two lesbians on that show, was killed off. She was shot by a stray bullet, and none of the magic in a supernatural show about vampires was used to bring her back.

I was devastated.

I had clung so hard to Willow and Tara’s relationship. I didn’t yet have the labels that I use today, but I knew that I liked girls. Tara, who I had identified with because she was shy and smart and kind of a dork. Tara, who kissed Willow and held her hand and called her “babe.” She was killed, all as a plot device. It wouldn’t be the last time a character I loved, who also loved women, would be killed in a similar way.

Positive representation really does matter. When queer shows and films are done in more humanizing ways, they allow queer people who watch to see a reflection of themselves in beloved and complex characters. It’s incredibly validating to see someone like you given substance and meaning beyond hegemonic perception of what it means to be LGBTQ. I want to see more characters like Cosima from Orphan Black, characters who are integral to the plot of their show, have flaws, and are also LGBTQ.

Positive representation doesn’t stop there: There are so many intersecting identities that deserve more and better representation in media that are also commonly overlooked. People of color are rarely cast as anything other than “that one black friend” or “that perceived-as-white love interest.” The moment there are an array of dynamic characters of color on one show, it is labeled as “other” and often dismissed. When LGBTQ people of color do appear in media, writers are often careless when contending with the multiple facets of their identities.

spoken by one of the few black gay men on television who isn’t a cliche, Captain Holt from Brooklyn 9-9

Often writers don’t come equipped with the ability to write complex queer characters of color – especially when they do not identify alongside their characters. Take the example of Orange Is the New Black. 90% of the writers for the Netflix show are white women, and they write for queer women of color characters. Because there isn’t enough diverse representation on staff, important aspects of identity are left out or altered, letting down major characters and long-time fans. Don’t get me started with how they let down a certain fan favorite this past season…

For a show with so many women of color characters, there sure are a lot of white people in the writers’ room.

Even with all of the negatives, there is still some very positive representation in queer media. Films like Mosquita Y Mari, Boy Meets Girl and Tangerine are all beautiful movies written by and/or starring queer individuals that explore LGBTQ characters genuinely. TV shows like Steven Universe, Brooklyn 9-9, and Grey’s Anatomy are also really great examples of good writing for queer characters. None of these characters are perfect people, and I wouldn’t want them to be. They are just more human, more three-dimensional, more interesting to watch.

Queer people live just as interesting and complicated lives as everyone else. We deserve to see these lives reflected in the media that we consume. I can’t wait to see how media evolves further and allows for more varied storylines and characters. As viewers, we should continue to be critical of what is and isn’t portrayed on the screen. One day I hope mainstream media will be more inclusive through authentic representations of queer characters. For now, I say you should go check out some of those titles I mentioned. Continue to demand more from your favorite shows, and don’t settle for tropes.

We’re here, we’re queer, and we deserve better!

Fall Career & Internship Fair

<Tagline>Some tips to help you out at the Fair!</Tagline>

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing more that I love than being able to kick up my feet and binge watch Scandal on Netflix, but there comes a point where even I can’t stand listening to Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grant have the same argument over and over again. I find myself wanting to do something productive in my spare time, something that will kick my critical thinking skills into gear. If any of you have ever found yourself in the same position; internships, jobs, and volunteer experiences are perfect for you! They allow you to develop your professional skills, gain real-world experiences and help you explore your interests. Working in the field of your major or general interests can help you decide whether or not a specific career path is something you want to pursue.

To help you get started with your internship or job search, the UMBC Career Center has organized the Fall Career & Internship Fair. This recruitment event is the largest fair UMBC hosts, with over one hundred thirty companies registered to attend! This is your chance to make a good first impression and show your potential employers what you have to offer them. You may be stressed or nervous about having to present yourself in front of so many different reputable organizations, but we’ve put together a list of ways to help you make the most out of the Career Fair:

Get your resume reviewed! We can help you get your resume into its best shape so you can advertise yourself in the best way possible. Drop-in hours at the Career Center are 2-4 PM, Monday-Friday (2nd floor of the Math and Psychology building), and 6-8 PM Tuesday and Wednesday in the Library’s Writing Center. We also have extended hours on September 22nd, from 10 AM-12 PM, and 1-4 PM.

Check out who’s coming to the fair here. Research the employers and see who you’re interested in visiting. Make sure to check out their job descriptions and announcements! The best way to show an employer that you are interested in a position is showing that you took the time to research the company and job requirements. Plus, job descriptions and announcements can often tell you what specific characteristics an employer is looking for in an employee. By researching beforehand, you can plan how you can tailor your experience to fit those characteristics.

Create your 30- second commercial. Not sure what that is? Find tips on how to make one here.

Dress to impress! Take a few extra minutes to plan out what your outfit for that day will be. Business attire is suggested. I find myself googling what “business formal” vs. “business casual” is every single time I have an interview, so here’s a link to help save you some time.

For me, the best way to get rid of my nerves is to make sure that I know what I’m talking about. So, the biggest piece of advice I can give to you is to be prepared, and that goes for anything you do in life.

In the foreground of a 1969 photo was a young couple. Their remarkable story had appeared on the Retriever Stories site, which is where I had first come across the photo. On Friday night, I was volunteering at the Student Events Board's outstanding Really Really Big Bingo Event:

My job was to stand near the food and tell people that the line could go on both sides of the buffet tables. There were dozens of round tables for the bingo players spread across the floor of the Retriever Activities Center, but only one was close to where I was standing. When the food line died down for a moment, I leaned over to greet a bearded man sitting at that table with his back to me. I guessed he was an alum from UMBC's early years, and was curious about his story. He said he graduated in 1970, and had met his wife (who was getting food at that moment) when they were both UMBC students. And ... I recognized him! He was the young man from that 1969 photo (see below). We had a great conversation about his time at UMBC and his life since.

On Saturday morning, I posted a Facebook status mentioning that I hoped I'd cross paths with Diane (Juknelis) Tichnell, class of 1970, who had written a remarkable reflection for UMBC's first Commencement program. And that's exactly what happened: We literally crossed paths on the UC Plaza, and I got to spend a few minutes learning the story of that text (which she'd had just 15 minutes to write, and never felt completely confident about) and UMBC's earliest years. Here's that reflection:

At the end of the Roots of Greatness Luncheon in the UC Ballroom, we all stood to sing the UMBC Alma Mater. I've been hearing and singing the Alma Mater for 10 years (it was introduced at UMBC's 40th anniversary celebration), but in that Ballroom on Saturday, standing with faculty, staff and students from UMBC's earliest years, I was really moved by it for the first time. That second verse rang so very true, and felt so well earned: "Throughout the ages, our UMBC, songs and memories will echo with true clarity. Knowledge and wisdom and truth we found here, friendships we treasure that will last through the years ..."

As Craig and I have been creating the Then & Now series, we've visited various spots on campus, trying to figure out exactly where some long-ago photographer stood, picturing the old buildings and walkways as they must have been. On Saturday I saw alumni from decades past attempting almost the reverse: living in their memories of the old buildings and walkways, and trying to figure out where they were standing now. I stopped to talk with a few, and heard stories that opened new windows on UMBC's past. One of them: a 1984 grad I met on the Commons Terrace was here for the construction of the new wing of the Biological Sciences Building (creating the breezeway). As we looked at that structure, she recalled that for weeks there were serious problems with construction workers catcalling female students as they walked past.

Many of the students I've known in my 13 years here came back, and connecting with them was almost overwhelming: so many stories I wanted to hear, so many memories stirred, and too little time for a deep dive. Most powerful were the reflections of graduates who see clearly how they're making use of what they learned as student leaders. Connecting them with current students, many of them experiencing similar challenges or holding the same positions, was thrilling. My list of alumni with whom to follow up, and ideas about how to tap their wisdom and insights, is long. I wish we had had more time. I wish we could be together in one place whenever we wanted.

The 13 years I've been at UMBC represent a decent fraction of the entire history of the university (and a somewhat larger fraction of my lifetime). That's long enough that I'm often the person in the room with institutional memory: the bearer of history. Sometimes I feel old, like an ambassador from a lost time. But not during the anniversary celebration. To the people who walked UMBC's paths before the concrete was poured, and who helped to create the culture and conditions that seem so natural we don't think of them as having starting points, I'm a latecomer. That's humbling and inspiring at the same time. We stand on the shoulders of giants, but we all can be UMBC pioneers.

What are the experiences from UMBC's 50th anniversary celebration you don't want to forget?
