What to Do At the Career Fair

What to do
    at the Career Fair

The Career Center sponsors several annual career fairs. Our next fair will be held on:

Wednesday, April 13
    from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom.

Your student will have a chance to meet with top employers
to discuss internships, career and employment opportunities and explore their
career options. There will be opportunities for all majors and for students of
all levels-from first-year students to graduate students.

Our employers love
UMBC students and they return to UMBC again and again in search of top
    candidates!

But, some students can find the career fair to be very
hectic and intimidating! Many students and employers are there; the room can be
noisy and sometimes students may even have to wait in lines before they can
speak with the employer of their choice. So, it is very important that your
student is prepared for this important event and that they go in with a
    positive attitude.

But if your student follows these basic job search guidelines,
s/he will have the career fair in the palm of his/her hand!

Do research beforehand.
Know who is participating and create a list of organizations that are of interest.
    Then research the
organization and know their products/services and employment needs.
Prioritize the list and bring it to the fair. With a list in hand, the student
will know exactly where to start.

Dress to impress.
Students should show employers that they are serious by dressing professionally.
This means a well-fitted, clean, and coordinated suit. Any patterns should be
simple, they should not wear perfume
or cologne, and tuck hair away from the face. Shoes should be close-toed,
polished and neat, and if they wear heels they should be no taller than three
    inches.

Bring the right
things. Students should bring a large supply of resumes, a list
of references, an attractive pen and a note pad. If they take a list of
references, they should make sure to contact the people on their list before
hand to warn them that they may be contacted by company XYZ.

Use a great 30-second commercial. The commercial should identify who s/he,
highlight a few accomplishments and strengths, show how s/he can add value to
the company, and be concise. Students should use this to start a conversation
with employers. Encourage them to practice with friends the night before!

Network with fellow
students. Your student should talk to fellow job-seekers at the event about
    different employers and possible jobs.

Ask the employers good
and thoughtful. S/he should have one or two questions in mind for each
employer. Questions should reflect the research they have done and their own
interests. Before leaving the recruitment table s/he should ask, “What will
happen next?” to learn about the next steps needed to get the job. They should
also prepare some general questions for employers they may not have expected to
talk to, for example, “What is the work environment like at XYZ Company?”

Follow-up. It is
also important that they follow-up with anyone they talked to at the job fair
through email within 24 hours. The student should ask for business cards. This
will help your student to remember names and key companies that match his/her
skills and interests, as well as provide him/her with the means to follow-up. If
an employer gave him/her special instructions such as posting a resume to a web
site, it is very important that s/he do so.

So, please pass this information along to your student. If s/he
follows these steps, they will navigate the career fair like a pro:

More Than a Band-Aid: LGBTQ Health Inequity

A reflection by Shira Devorah, Women’s Center Student Staff

Going to the doctor is never fun; most people dread pesky checkups getting in the way of their day. While medical appointments can feel like a nuisance to some, for many people in the LGBTQ community, just seeing a doctor can be dangerous.

Saying that structural health inequity in the U.S. is a problem is an understatement, as many people face huge barriers when it comes to receiving adequate care. Women, people of color, people with lower socioeconomic statuses, fat people, elderly people — the list goes on and people continue to suffer. While I’m specifically highlighting a few of the issues surrounding queer care, it’s important for people to know that this is just one flawed aspect of a flawed system. To fight for justice, we must demand competent care for all people.

So before we all go kicking down the doors of the nearest hospital, let’s discuss what the issues actually are. Why is it so difficult for queer people to get the medical help that all people deserve?

Here are just a few reasons:

1) There’s a large element of risk that queer people must face when it comes to taking care of our health.

Stigma, discrimination, violence, and even denial of care are all real issues that can dissuade people from seeking help in the first place. According to Lambda Legal’s 2010 survey, over half of LGBTQ respondents felt discriminated against when receiving care. Getting to receive care at all, let alone good care, can be very difficult for queer individuals who have poor access to health care. There are huge health discrepancies in LGBTQ populations, especially for older people and transgender individuals.

Credit: Maureen McNabb, wordpress

As a queer person who usually isn’t read as queer, I’m very lucky that I haven’t had to fear going to the doctor (besides a healthy fear of getting shots). Here’s why:

I’m a lazy femme, so I don’t get the strange looks from doctors assessing every inch of me that gender nonconforming individuals might get.

If the doctor asks about my sexual history, I may blush, but being a bisexual cis woman in a monogamous relationship with a cis man means that the kind of sex I would be discussing wouldn’t be considered outside the bounds of heterosexuality.

I haven’t had reason to fear outing myself through discussing my experiences.

If I have a problem with my genitals, I only have to worry about the coldness of the speculum, not that my gender identity is being questioned or invalidated.

These are just some reasons why going to the doctors is so difficult for many people who do not have this privilege.

2) There’s a huge gap in medical knowledge, especially for queer people and women.

No matter how nice or accepting a medical professional is, they may not always know how to treat a queer person. Medical schools in the U.S. spend so little time on LGBTQ-related content. Often times, medical students are taught that sexual behaviors of LGBTQ people are risky, which perpetrates the narrative that gay people are ‘diseased’. Doctors aren’t free of biases and such misunderstanding can get in the way of someone getting adequate care.

Many doctors have very limited experiences with transgender issues. Insurance companies will refuse to sign off on HRT or surgeries that some trans people really need. On the flip side, the medicalization of transgender identities suggests that all trans people have to have surgery to be considered more “legitimate,” which is not possible nor desired for many trans people.

3) Gender and sexuality are areas in which medicine can be negligent.

A lack of medical knowledge surrounding certain populations is a problem, and not just for queer people. Did you know that there is a huge gender gap in medical research and clinical trials? Medical research is lacking valuable data on women’s issues. We don’t even know for sure what a heart attack looks like for a woman because of countless misconceptions. This gap in knowledge, coupled with gender biases, seriously affects medication, care, and diagnoses that women receive.

When gender and sexuality collide (as they often do in most humans), things get complicated. Aspects of personal identity intersect, creating an even bigger gap in medical knowledge. Medicine has historically failed queer people, and a lot of effort is required to improve care for the future.

Okay. Deep breaths all around. This is some heavy stuff.

Luckily, there are also a lot of options where LGBTQ healthcare is pretty amazing. There is a substantial list of resources at the end of this post, so check them out! Good options do exist, even though access to these options may be limited for many.

Students here at UMBC have pretty accommodating facilities. University Health Services has a very dedicated and helpful staff of professionals who are trained to work with all kinds of student populations. Almost the entire medical staff is made up of women, and personally I’ve found the practitioners to be gentle and attentive. UHS is consistently making an effort to improve, and while it is by no means a perfectly accessible center, attempts are being made.

Our medical space on campus may be generally positive, but we also have to be aware doesn’t change the negative experiences that many people can face elsewhere. Some may be too scared of going to UHS because of past trauma or maltreatment. Even though UHS is a great resource, the training and education for all medical practitioners is still lacking, and it’s possible to come into a campus medical center without being fully prepared to treat all kinds of people.

In Peer Health Education, the inclusiveness of LGBTQ issues is lacking, especially when it comes to discussions of sexual health. A big initiative that the sexual health committee is undertaking now is to revamp the current programs to be more inclusive to people of all sexualities and gender identities. Recently, I created a survey in order to assess how LGBTQ people feel about sexual health education on campus. I’m hoping that this will foster a productive discussion with other queer UMBC community members so that we can work together to make important changes to the health education curriculum. While this is in no way a quick fix the huge problem of LGBTQ health disparities, it’s always good to think globally and act locally.

Everyone has the right to be treated respectfully and competently when accessing health care. Even though my experiences with doctors have been generally positive, I can’t say the same for many other queer people. What I can do is speak up about the problems that I know exist, and do my best to contribute to change. As a peer, as a queer, and as a person devoted to justice, I want to use my privilege and opportunities to work towards a better system. I just hope that one day the only thing people have to fear when walking into a doctor’s office is as simple as a shot.

The film is six minutes long and revolves around a young college student being confronted by her friends about her abusive relationship. Monster’s surreal plot pays homage to the horror films of John Carpenter, known for They Live and The Thing. Taking a post-modern approach of the horror film genre, Monster utilizes the conventional aesthetics commonly found in these films and moves towards an alternate conclusion. These aesthetics include dim lighting, moody sound design, and hand-held filming. The dialogue was all improvisational from non-professional student actors, resulting in a quirky style of interaction among the cast. Filmed over one evening, Monster is the result of team collaboration with each member voicing their opinion into the creative process. With the inevitable arrival of the protagonist’s abusive spouse, the film’s ending contorts the audiences’ expectations into absurdity. Monster is a self-aware narrative that questions the definition of horror in scary movies.

Between the Lines, a two-minute-long stop-animation short, is a hand-drawn project including hundreds of drawings and photographs. Set to French composer Yann Tiersen’s Toujours La, this project’s main concept arose from my self-image as an artist. The film is about the common thread connecting all my artwork, from a rough sketch to an elaborated final project, despite the unique context and stylistic approach of each creation. The story line revolves around two little characters, who, as children, share a similar kind of gentle and innocent personality. While both are simply drawn, the characters live in different worlds: one has been sketched into a class notebook in a rough, doodle-like format, while the other has been drawn more carefully into a sketchbook, and has been colored in fully. I purposefully chose a seemingly simplified approach to animation style in order to embody the sweetness of the relationship not only between the characters, but between artist and artwork. This project was created with Adobe Premiere Pro.

Learn how to Fragile X Syndrome can cause Autism at URCAD!

Learn more about Fragile X Syndrome by Astrocyte cells use adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to transfer signals. This process is suggested as a novel therapeutic target in Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), one of autism’s few known genetic causes. Our aim is to develop a carbon fiber electrode aptamer-based sensor capable of single cell and in vivo measurements of ATP to determine the release mechanism and spatial location of ATP. Aptamers are short nucleotide sequences that select for target analytes and translate binding into an electrochemical signal. Carbon fiber is very robust, enabling sensitive measurements while eliminating background processes like oxygen reduction that plague existing measurements. We are developing the linkage chemistry to covalently attach the aptamer to the carbon surface. Specifically, we have electrochemically grafted several compounds (4-aminobenzoic acid and ethylenediamine) to the surface of glassy carbon electrodes and have found 4-nitrobenzene diazonium is best suited for further development. To test for successful grafting, we have employed the positively charged hexaammineruthenium (III) chloride (RuHex) as a redox reporter. Using cyclic voltammetry, changes in observed peak current caused by electrostatic repulsion of RuHex with the grafted electrode surface report on the grafting’s success. With the attached diazonium, we are now poised to fabricate our aptamer sensors on carbon surfaces. To learn more, visit Justine Lottermoser's project at URCAD 2016!

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

What is great about my job is that I'm working with children, but still doing real-life projects that apply to my career. For example, in the morning, I do fun activities with the kids, such as making bookmarks or jewelry with them. Then afterwards, I would be writing a script for an exhibit, thinking of new ideas for activities, designing new signage, or researching facts for an exhibit.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I went on the Port Discovery website and downloaded an application. I heard back 2 months later for an interview and got the job a couple of weeks later!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

The flexibility of the work. I love kids and I have wanted a job that involves working with them. But, at the same time, I wanted a creative job that can put brand new works in my portfolio. With this internship, I can do everything that I love. I can send in professional scripts & copy written stories and designs when I apply for jobs and internships for post-college while I build up my relationship and leadership skills while entertaining kids.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Definitely by working with the kids. Kids get excited about everything that comes to them. When you give them something, they get so focused on it and they love to show off their creations or say how fun they are having with big smiles on their faces. You can just tell how happy they are.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Be patient when you are waiting to hear back. The hiring director might email you in an hour or even in a few months. Just breathe.
