PAID 2016 Summer Research Opportunity! Research Experience on Sustainable Infrastructure Materials The Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts is offering paid research experience in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering on sustainable infrastructure materials. 

Students will receive a stipend of $500 per week.

Between the late 1990s and the early 2000s, UMBC hosted MindFest, an annual event advertised as "a celebration of the powers of idea and information." The first MindFest, held in 1995, was created to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Albin O. Kuhn Library with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours of the library, and views of the newly renovated gallery. The university continued the celebration yearly, offering various events and activities for students, their families, friends, alumni, and the surrounding Baltimore and Washington communities to participate in.

Events of the day often included Chessfest (UMBC's Chess Team would participate in a match of chess with another university), Diplomat for a Day (visitors would participate in simulated diplomatic debates with the UMBC Model United Nations team), tours of art and photography exhibitions, musical performances, and children's activities.

Kuhn Library & Gallery is excited to announce the release of new and updated records for the Library’s archival collections, a major milestone in providing easier searching of the holdings. The 16-month-long project creates collection-level records and implements an Encoded Archival Description (EAD-XML) compliant workflow for the collections.

As of January 2016, Library staff have successfully updated over 100 finding aids and collection-level records, and created new collection-level records for nearly 50 previously-undescribed archival collections. A workflow was created to convert records to both EAD-XML and MARC-XML formats using national descriptive standards. These records will be made available in multiple access systems including the Library Catalog, the Special Collections Search (PastPerfect Online), and through union catalogs such as OCLC’s ArchiveGrid and the National Library of Medicine’s History of Medicine Finding Aids Consortium. The updated records will facilitate access to UMBC’s archival collections and help to more effectively reach the researchers, scholars, students, and community members that are seeking the unique materials held at UMBC.

These new and updated collections are now searchable from the Special Collections page on the Library’s redesigned website, as well as through the Library Catalog. Users can also browse the full list of archival collections on our new Finding Aids page.

The project is funded by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the granting agency of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), as a part of their Documenting Democracy: Access to Historical Records program. Library staff from the Special Collections, Bibliographic & Metadata Services, Library Information Technology Services, and Reference departments partnered on the creation and accessibility of the records. In future months the project will allow us to further streamline the updated workflow and continue to create and update new collection records.

The Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) seeks a Summer Public Health Associate. The Associate reports directly to the Commissioner of Health. 

Founded in 1793, BCHD is the oldest health department in the country, with more than 1,000 employees and an annual budget of $130 million that aims to promote health and improve wellbeing through education, policy/advocacy, and direct service delivery. BCHD’s wide-ranging responsibilities include maternal and child health, youth wellness, school health, senior services, animal control, restaurant inspections, emergency preparedness, STI/HIV treatment, and acute and chronic disease prevention.  

BCHD is seeking a Summer Public Health Associate with exceptional writing ability to expand its reach and write prolifically on issues affecting health in Baltimore.  

As the Summer Public Health Associate, the selected candidate will:  
• Draft Op-Eds, scholarly articles, press releases, and other writings for publication in various media, and seek and solicit opportunities to publish such works.
• Write policy memos, preparation materials, talking points, and speeches for the Commissioner. This includes closely coordinating with the Special Assistant, Public Information Officer, Legislative Affairs Director, Chief of Staff, and other principals.
• Interact with legislators, community members, senior-level staff from various City departments, and local and national experts in a variety of policy fields.
• Prepare for and attend press conferences, City Council hearings, senior staff meetings, and strategy-planning sessions as they arise.
• Have eagerness and drive to work long hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends as needed in order to complete the duties as outlined above, and any other special projects and requests that may arise. 

Desired Skills and Experience: 
• Must be exceptionally hard working with strong sense of urgency. This is a once-in-alifetime opportunity to serve a key role to the Commissioner of Health and help run an agency with a mission to improve the health and well-being of a city. 
• Must have exceptional writing ability and strong policy and project management skills.
• Must be passionate about social justice, committed to service, flexible, eager, and able to meet tight deadlines and able to manage many tasks and projects from all stages. 
• Must be able to work closely with the Commissioner and anticipate her needs and requirements.
• Must have exceptional organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
• Preferred candidates should be seeking a master’s degree or other graduate degree in public health, public policy, public administration or a related field; would also prefer 1-2 years of work or internship experience in public health, policy, or related fields. 

This is an unpaid internship with a full-time, three-month minimum commitment; however, course credit may be available and publications will be guaranteed.

Spend your Summer 2016 in Costa Rica and GET PAID The Organization for Tropical Studies from Duke University is providing hands-on, field-oriented research experience for undergraduate students at one of the most important sites for research in tropical biology- La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica.

The nine-week research program will run from June 9 2016 to August 9 2016.

What kind of research will you do?

The topics range from the ecology and conservation of various organisms to GIS mapping of regenerating forests and behavioral ecology and climate impacts on declining amphibians. You can indicate an area of study that interests you the most (as part of the application process) so that you can be matched with a suitable mentor. 

APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JANUARY 31, 2016.

Benefits will include:

  1. $4000 Stipend for 9 weeks of research
  2. Room and board expenses covered
  3. International travel to and from Costa Rica covered
  4. An opportunity to immerse in a rich academic community of researchers

The Preservation Archaeology Field School in southwestern New Mexico will offer students an opportunity to learn excavation, survey, and analysis methods in a beautiful, remote, and archaeologically rich part of the American Southwest. The program will integrate research, education and preservation to investigate compelling questions about the past. 

This six-week program will provide undergraduate students an opportunity to test excavations at the Gila River Farm site in New Mexico. The program will primarily focus on how different earlier traditions have allowed people of various cultural background to live together, which includes questions such as how local plants and animals are used and how raw materials are obtained.
