UMBC students help veterans with PTSD with new app

<Tagline>Computer science students use technology to help vets</Tagline>

UMBC students Damola Adediran ‘17, computer science, and Sarah Kirby ‘16, computer science, were members of a standout team at the 2015 HackDC Hackathon that won top prize in the “Best Mobile Application for Clinicians” category, for their app “myBivy.”

This year’s HackDC Hackathon challenged competitors to build a mobile app to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) deal with insomnia, which is common within this population.

The myBivy app tracks veteran’s heartbeat and movements to detect night terrors, and over time works to help prevent them. The app allows veterans to observe their sleep patterns and to share the data collected overnight with their doctor.

The 36-hour-long Hackathon, held September 25-27, gave teams a chance to work on developing their apps by collaborating with clinicians, veterans, and veterans’ families and friends, who offered feedback on what information the veterans want to track.

Adediran’s job on his team was to communicate with clinicians about how the app would best serve the veterans, and to debug the app throughout the development phase. This was Adediran’s second Hackathon, and he says it was extremely empowering. He describes it as, “something I’ve never experienced before.”

In addition to a cash prize, the team will use funds collected on their Kickstarter page to develop, test and launch the myBivy app by the spring of 2016.
The Native American Side Of The Thanksgiving Menu

<Tagline>Recipes from the National Museum of the American Indian</Tagline>

Everyone knows the schoolhouse version of the first Thanksgiving story: New England pilgrims came together with Native Americans to share a meal after the harvest. The original menu was something of a joint venture, but over the years, a lot of the traditional dishes have lost their native flavor.

For those who want to create a feast that celebrates the flavors that Native Americans brought to the table, Chef Richard Hetzler put together an entire menu of options from his award-winning cookbook, The Mitsitam Cafe Cookbook.

The recipes are drawn from the Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, where Hetzler was lead chef until summer 2014. Since opening the cafe, he told NPR's Celeste Headlee he observed a growing interest in native cooking.

Hetzler attributes it to Americans wanting to know more about their history, and to the health benefits of native foods. (Look no further than the "Sioux Chef's" forthcoming restaurant in the Twin Cities, too.) He tried to stay true to that tradition by keeping his recipes simple.

"There's not a lot of stuff put into them to change those flavors or manipulate what you're tasting," Hetzler said. "You're getting the true healthiness of that dish." Hetzler also took indigenous foods and ingredients from different regions throughout the Western Hemisphere, and adapt them to today's palate.

Sherman is still experimenting with the type of food he'll serve in the restaurant. Recently he made this walleye filet with sumac and maple sugar, a white bean and smoked walleye croquette and toasted hominy.

THE SALT - The 'Sioux Chef' Is Putting Pre-Colonization Food Back On The Menu

"If you think about the history of food," said Hetzler, "a lot of that dates back to Native Americans and what they were doing." Those methods include cooking dishes with ingredients that have a natural synergy. Hetzler's Three Sisters Salad uses corn, beans and squash that have been traditionally planted and grown together.

For hesitant home cooks, Hetzler isn't asking you to throw out grandma's recipes. "Branch out, try one thing," he said. "Nobody wants to change their whole meal. But you could incorporate one piece and start making traditions of your own, that carry down to your children or your family members, and keep going from there."

Got some time to kill over break?

<Tagline>Check out the exclusive online database Vault!</Tagline>

Sometimes we get so caught up in our school work and our
daily lives that we totally forget to think about the career we want after we
graduate. So it’s really great to have resources that make it super easy and
informative to learn more about the industry you’re preparing for. The Career
Center at UMBC wants students to have a competitive advantage for having the
resources to help them land their dream job, which is why the Career Center
provides students with the very helpful, informative and exclusive database
    Vault.

Vault gives a ton of information about various industries,
including an overview of what the industry entails, the background of how it
became a profession, the industry outlook of the profession, and even contact
information for different organizations in the industry! Their Q&A videos
include professionals in various industries that provide very realistic and
helpful answers, which can be very encouraging to watch. Usually I have to google
several websites to get these details, so it’s super convenient to have it all
here. If you already have a pretty good idea of everything your industry
entails, Vault also has resources for everything you need to know about
applying and interviewing for jobs. They have articles and videos that help you
have a strong resume, research for the interview, nail the interview, and even
follow-up after the interview. I don’t know about you, but I’m always finding
myself to be stressed out about following up with employers after an interview,
so I was very excited when I saw this.

The truth is, even if you think you know a lot about the
professional world already, you can always benefit from learning more. And this
website makes everything straight forward, easy, and even enjoyable to
read/watch. Some of my supervisors encouraged me to make a Vault account to
learn more about it, and I’m so glad I did. As a Public History graduate
student, people are always asking me what Public History is and what I plan on
doing with it after I graduate. I’m sure all of you deal with these questions
all of the time, and they can be pretty difficult to answer. However, I checked
out Vault, and they have so much information on the Museum and Cultural Centers
Industry, which is exactly the industry I plan to enter! They even have contact
information for museum associations that I didn’t even know about. It also
helped a student who came into the Career Center today. He is very interested
in getting into Health Care Management but wanted to know the types of
positions he should take in his college career to make sure he was getting the
experience he needed for this field. We checked the Health Care Management page
on Vault and it was extremely helpful for him!

So to make your account:

First enter through this University of Maryland, Baltimore
County Exclusive Vault Access Link, register for your own account, and then customize it! You have the ability to
let your profile be seen by top employers and recruiters, so I’d keep updating
your profile just as you would your resume or your LinkedIn profile! If you
want to know more about how to set up your profile or get the most out of your
vault account, you can check out their video tutorials here.
