A: I have had to be really proactive in shaping the trajectory of my undergraduate career at UMBC, and while that definitely seemed like a chore to my freshman year self, I think it has really allowed me to make the most of my college experience. As a student, I have enjoyed taking a wide variety of classes, and I have never felt uncomfortable seeking out and getting to know many of my professors and advisors. As a leader, I have had the privilege of meeting and mobilizing many different types of people through a lot of the student organizations I sought out and joined as a freshman. As an artist, I have found many unique ways through which I could express myself on campus (ex. the “Super Art Fight” event during Art Week 2014, which was really fun). And overall, I feel that I have been able to act as a motivator for other students to make the most of the academic, extra-curricular, and recreational resources available on the UMBC campus.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: It is tempting for me to look back on the past few years and zero in on all the things I could have done differently or even better, but I have learned to not be so hard on myself. I have done many things that I definitely would not have engaged in prior to college, including singing at the ICCAs, conducting scientific research, and running in an SGA election. Through these experiences, many of which were honestly very demanding at the time, I feel that I have become a much stronger, more resilient person.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: Last semester, I started volunteering at the Baltimore Animal Rescue Care Shelter (BARCS) through the Shriver Center. I signed up to be a volunteer in the cat units, where my central duty was “socializing” cats. To my pleasant surprise, this volunteer position entailed a lot of petting and playing with the shelter cats, many of which had been surrendered by their owners, found as strays in the streets of Baltimore, or previously neglected by a hoarder. Through my work, I was able to help a lot of the cats become more comfortable around people, and I realized that I actually really like cats (I had always considered myself a fervent “dog person” prior to volunteering here). I am really excited to volunteer here again during the Fall 2015 semester!

A: The first time I ever visited UMBC was in 8th grade (2008) for Maryland History Day. I was there with two other guys presenting research on the Cuban Missile Crisis. I vividly recall drinking coffee in the Commons after the presentation and thinking to myself, “I suppose I could picture myself drinking coffee here as a college student...”

Of course, as fate would have it, I have found myself drinking coffee in the Commons a lot these past few years. And I still love studying history.

November is National Native American Heritage Month

<Tagline>Learn more at our Nov. 11th What's the Tea Discussion!</Tagline>

Presidential Proclamation -- National Native American
    Heritage Month, 2015

NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, 2015

- - - - - - -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

American Indians and Alaska Natives enrich every aspect of our country.
As the first to live on this land, Native Americans and their traditions and
values inspired -- and continue to inspire -- the ideals of self-governance and
determination that are the framework of our Nation. This month, we recognize
the contributions made by Native Americans since long before our founding, and
we resolve to continue the work of strengthening government-to-government ties
with tribal nations and expanding possibility for all.

Native Americans have helped make America what it is today. As we
reflect on our history, we must acknowledge the unfortunate chapters of
violence, discrimination, and deprivation that went on for far too long, as
well as the effects of injustices that continue to be felt. While we cannot
undo the pain and tragedy of the past, we can set out together to forge a
brighter future of progress and hope across Indian Country and the entire
    American landscape.

Since I took office, I have worked with tribal leaders to write a new
chapter in our nation-to-nation relationship. Ensuring young people have every
opportunity to succeed is a critical aspect of our work together, and this year
my Administration hosted the inaugural White House Tribal Youth Gathering following
the launch of Generation Indigenous -- an initiative aimed at improving the
lives of Native youth and empowering the next generation of Native leaders. We
will also host the seventh White House Tribal Nations Conference later this
year, bringing together leaders of 567 tribes to explore opportunities for
progress, with a particular focus on young people. As part of our agenda for
providing Native youth the chance to realize their fullest potential, I have
engaged tribal communities in a range of critical areas, and we have worked
together to boost high school graduation rates and afford young people more
chances to pursue higher education, employment, and professional development
opportunities. We're also working to expand access to health and counseling
services essential to ensuring youth feel safe and heard.

My Administration has continued to partner with tribes to address vital
gaps in resources for Indian Country, including equipping communities with
broadband, rebuilding infrastructure, spurring economic growth, and increasing
renewable energy. To confront the peril of a changing climate, we are also
working with tribal leaders across America to develop effective approaches to
protecting our communities from this grave threat. And because we know that
fostering pride in the languages, traditions, and practices that make up the
extraordinary richness of Native American culture is central to our shared
progress, my Administration remains committed to ensuring every community feels
connected to the extraordinary legacies they are a part of.

This month, let us reaffirm our responsibility to ensure each
generation is defined by a greater sense of opportunity than the last, and let
us pledge to maintain our strong relationship with tribal nations across
America. By keeping this commitment, and by endeavoring to shape a future in
which every citizen has the chance to build a life worthy of their hopes and
dreams, we can ensure that ours is a country that is true to our spirit and to
our enduring promise as a land where all things are possible for all people.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of
America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the
laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim November 2015 as National Native
American Heritage Month. I call upon all Americans to commemorate this month
with appropriate programs and activities, and to celebrate November 27, 2015,
    as Native American Heritage Day.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of
October, in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen, and of the Independence
of the United States of America the two hundred and fortieth.

BARACK OBAMA

Intern of the Week: Elise Donkor for Computer Engineering

  <Tagline>Learn about Elise's experience as a Software Dev. Intern!</Tagline>

Name: Elise Donkor

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Amazon

Position Title: Software Development Engineer

Major(s)/Minor(s): Computer Engineering

Expected Graduation Year: May 2016

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I worked as a software development engineering intern for Amazon Web Service, a cloud computing service offered by Amazon.com (no, they don't just sell books!). AWS offers remote computing services such as scalable storage and delivery, analytics, and security. My specific area of work was building applications for the CloudTrail team. CloudTrail gives users the history of AWS API calls made from their account, enabling auditing, and security analysis.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

The application process was pretty straight forward. I applied online through their jobs and internship website. I had two 45 minute in-person technical interviews, largely stressing data structures and object oriented programming.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Cloud computing is a hot topic right now, and AWS is incredibly innovative. Amazon offers incredibly affordable cloud computing services for students, researchers, and software developers. Everyday, they are coming up with ways to solve complex problems in a relatable way. Most teams were really busy, prepping for reInvent: Amazon’s yearly conference where they display new tools for software developers. I really enjoyed the exciting atmosphere and the exchange of ideas.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Amazon's internship program is pretty intense: from the selection process to the given assignments, they expect a lot and give you the tools and resources to make an impact. I think the guidance from my mentor and other people on my team helped me have a successful internship experience.

Go for what you want––plain and simple. Don't follow anyone else's path. Instead, carve your own. Look for jobs that are both exciting and will take you out of your comfort zone.

Need some help with building or improving your Linkedin?

<Tagline>Come to the Keys to Success: LinkedIn Workshop!</Tagline>

“What is a LinkedIn profile anyway?” “I already have a
resume, why do I need one?” I’m sure you have thought this at some point
recently. But the truth is, LinkedIn is a very useful tool for job searching,
making connections, and highlighting your skills and experiences for employers
to see. By having a profile, you have access to over 300 million professionals!

On Monday, November 16th from 12 to 1pm, there
will be a Keys To Success: LinkedIn workshop in Commons 331. This will be a
great introduction to why a LinkedIn profile is a helpful tool for connecting
and networking. It will also give you tips to not only build your profile, but
how to also effectively use all of LinkedIn’s resources. There’s no
registration needed for this workshop, so check your schedule and see if you
    can make it on Monday!

LinkedIn is a great way of establishing connections from
your previous or current employers, classmates, advisors, faculty, and
family/family friends. You can even look at all of the alumni from UMBC and see
what people from your degree program have found a career in! Even if you don’t
feel like you have a lot to put on LinkedIn right now, I think it’s a great
idea to create a profile and fill it in the best you can. As you gain more
experiences and connections, you’ll be able to keep filling in your profile
more and more. I created mine when I was a sophomore in undergrad with only a
couple of jobs and a few connections on my profile, but I kept adding on as I
got new jobs and internships and made new connections. I now have 250
connections, many of which who have endorsed me for the skills I put on my
profile, which will look very good if an employer looks at it. It wasn’t a lot
of trouble to make this profile and I’m so glad I did. With that said, I highly recommend getting
    started on yours!

If you check the Career Center’s website, we have a very
helpful page for creating a profile, connecting, and internship/job searching.
You can find that page here. LinkedIn also has a lot of helpful
videos and tip sheets on how to build your profile as well. You can check out
their resources here. Once you’ve created your LinkedIn
profile, you can also make an appointment at the Career Center to have a
specialist look over your profile and give you feedback!

Another great benefit to having a LinkedIn profile is
joining UMBC’s Alumni-Student Networking Group. This group aims to connect its
network of active alumni to current UMBC students in support of career
exploration, academic development, and professional connections. Each week on
this group I’ll be posting discussion questions relating to job/internship
searching and all of the aspects of those searches (interviews, resumes,
company visits, professional etiquette). Not only can you get great advice and
support from other alumni, but you can also make connections and give feedback
of your own! You can join the group here.

Las Meninas, a play that touched on the subjects of race, gender, and culture in King Louis XIV's court, was the most recent production of UMBC's to appear at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), university theater's most prestigious competition. Six other UMBC plays have received recognition by the Kennedy Center in the course of the campus' existence, including Buried (2003), The Diary of a Scoundrel (1996), Spring's Awakening (1987), The Importance of Being Oscar (1986), and Play, Act Without Words II, Not I, Footfalls and Breath (1978). The very first production of UMBC's to receive national recognition was the Performing Arts Department's production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in 1974. This was also the very first time a Maryland institution had been chosen to perform at the KCACTF.

Do you have an interest in Becoming a Nonprofit Leader?

<Tagline>Apply to the Shattuck Family Internship Program!</Tagline>

PAID INTERN OPPORTUNITIES THIS SPRING

The Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation
and Social Change prepares UMBC students for the rigors and rewards of
entrepreneurship and social innovation. This program places
highly-motivated students from diverse backgrounds in mentored
internships to better prepare them to launch nonprofit or social
ventures. Students get training and experience to empower them to
become the next generation of social entrepreneurs–working largely in
the not-for-profit world, developing and delivering innovative solutions
to some of our region’s most urgent social problems.

Internships last one semester (15 weeks) and students will work, on
average, 8 to 10 hours per week. Students receive a stipend of $1,500
toward their compensation. In addition to the internship, students
engage in projects and activities that further expose them to the social
     entrepreneurial mindset.

BONUS: The Shattuck Interns can apply to become Family Entrepreneurial
Scholars/Fellows which provides selected interns who successfully
completed their placements, and have demonstrated particularly strong
proclivity to become social entrepreneurs with awards up to $5,000. The
awards can be used as academic scholarships, or as “seed funding” to
launch new ventures or community-based social entrepreneurship projects.

    Why Participate?
- Earn a competitive stipend of $1,500 plus an opportunity to
potentially earn credit and obtain up to $5,000 for a scholarship or
seed funding for a new venture or community-based social
    entrepreneurship projects
- Gain valuable experience in your career field by interning 120 hours over the course of the semester (8-10 hours per week)
- Be exposed to the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to successfully launch and manage a nonprofit/social venture
- Develop a network of contacts in the nonprofit community for future references and opportunities
- Apply classroom knowledge in a realistic work environment and apply lessons learned in the workplace to academic coursework

    ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS MUST:
- Have completed a minimum of 30 credits with a GPA of 3.0 or above, and
possess an interest in social change. ALL majors are encouraged to
    apply.

    TO APPLY:
Interested students are asked to submit a Resume and a Cover Letter answering the following questions:
Discuss your interest in both entrepreneurship and this intern program.
What has been your entrepreneurial involvement thus far such as
coursework, seminars, etc. (if applicable)? What type of start-up would
you like to intern for and why?

    Credentials can be e-mailed to:
Christine Routzahn, Director
Career Center, UMBC
routzahn@umbc.edu, 410-455-3671
