From the time freshman and transfer students arrive on campus, there are  many competing demands on their time and attention.No doubt they will want to check out the gym equipment in the RAC, try the various delicious food venues, and join a student organization to make new friends.

But, why not visit the Career Center? Students generally do not rank visiting the Career Center high on their immediate to-do list. This is where you, the parent, can step in and suggest that they RUN not WALK to the Career Center in the Math/Psych building (second floor).  Many students will be interested in a job on campus to help pay for out- of- pocket expenses. A campus job is a great resume builder and can help your student(s) start making life-long connections. Contrary to popular belief, students who have part-time jobs often perform better in their classes than other students because they learn excellent time management skills. Students can learn about on-campus job opportunities and apply directly by logging in to their free online UMBCworks account, which is UMBC’s job and internship database. To get started using UMBCworks, students will need to upload a resume and have it approved by a Career Center staff member. Our website, www.careers.umbc.edu, has excellent resource tools to help students make their first resume or polish the one they already have. There’s even an on-line resume writing tutorial.  In addition, the Career Center holds drop-in hours daily from 2-4 pm where students can receive feedback and resume assistance. 

It is crucial that your student have relevant work experience before graduation if they are going to be competitive in today’s job market. We also have an excellent internship program to help students gain invaluable experience while they are working toward graduating.

Please have your student(s) mark their calendars for the myriad of networking and recruitment events as well as for “Career Crush” which is a month of career events, seminars, workshops and also includes a job fair. Check our career calendar for all of the details.  

Even if your student is not pursuing employment, the career center can help. Students who are undecided or thinking about changing their major(s) can take the FOCUS 2 career assessment to explore their passions and strengths. Afterwards, students meet with a career counselor to analyze and discuss the results to see how their passions can become their profession.  After a career path has been identified, our career counselors can help map out a plan to make your student’s career dreams a reality.

So, be sure to send your students to the Career Center, which is located in the Math-Psychology building in room 212.  Our hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We are here to help.

My click moment was progressive. It proceeded slowly, with caution, and then consumed me.

For as long as it has been relevant, I’ve believed in autonomy. I didn’t have the word for it in 7th grade, but I knew that I was never obligated to dance with a boy at a mixer* or hug a stranger just because they insisted I should. I don’t remember the day I realized I was black, but I do remember the day I learned of “Affirmative Action.” Eleven years old is a little soon to tell someone they only got into that middle school because they are black. I knew of overt racism, but the door to covert racism swung open with the hiss of that tongue.

I don’t remember the day I realized I was a feminist, but I do remember the day my “friends” tried to make me feel like a slut** because I told them I lost my virginity to my then boyfriend. I was unaware at the time that they had become sexually active years before and were taking the opportunity to project some regretful feelings in the form of hate. I don’t remember the first time I spoke out in support of reproductive justice, but I do remember the devastation I felt after the only comprehensive reproductive health class at my high school was dropped due to its “insignificance” in relation to English and science.

And then there was the first time I consciously acknowledged my liberality.

The moment when you cross the line from spectator to activist is a scary one. You know there’s no going back, no renouncing your titles. It’s permanent. To go from the quiet girl who solely acknowledged injustices and microaggressions to the one who actively spoke out against stigma, prejudices, and misogyny… that was my click moment. It was a sneaky, powerful, positive, scary moment. Think of it like approaching the peak of a roller-coaster, but the thrill of anticipation never ends.

• Facilities Management and PD initiate discussion about the upcoming event
• Facilities Management will notify the two outside contractors to be ready to respond on the day of the event. These companies are on contract to bring in large equipment and operators for main roadways and large parking lots, and smaller equipment and operators for secondary roadways and walkways

• Facilities Management will contact the two contractors and arrange for a specific time for each of them to be on campus
• Campus grounds staff are also mobilized to assist in the event response
• Facilities Management and PD also begin checking the UMBC calendar for scheduled events, to assess impact weather might have on them

• The PD will coordinate with State Police, Baltimore County Police Dept. and State Highway Administration, regarding off campus roadway conditions
• Various weather services are continually monitored to understand ongoing weather conditions
• Other campuses are consulted to share information about conditions in different areas and to consult about their response to the event
• The team analyzes the anticipated timing of the storm to gauge its impact on commuting to campus, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours
• Facilities Management will evaluate the conditions on campus to determine ability to have the campus ready for opening
• Between 4:30 am and 5:00 am, FM and the PD consider all information available on conditions to formulate a recommendation on campus closure or delayed opening.
• Between 5:00 am and 5:30 am, the Chief of PD shares all information gathered with the VP of Administration and Finance, as well as recommendations regarding closure or delayed opening
• Based on the above coordination, a decision is made on the closure or delayed opening
• If closure or delayed opening is the determination, the PD will send out a “text alert.” Also a campus-wide email and notice to the media take place. The goal is to send the alert out by no later than 6:00 am, and to make every effort to announce a decision by 5:30 am.
• If a delay is revised to a closure, the goal is to provide at least a 2-hour notice.

• The accuracy of a weather forecast improves the closer the timeframe being considered. With each passing hour, meteorologists are fine tuning their forecasts for location, duration, intensity, and precipitation totals
• The specific timing of a given storm, which affects the progress snow removal crews are able to make throughout the night, is key to a determination for campus opening or closure
• The ability to assess actual conditions in the early morning hours, rather than predicted conditions many hours beforehand, is the most effective means of arriving at the best decision
