Black Lives Matter and Mental Brave Spaces

<Tagline>A Post from Women's Center Staff, Ty Philip</Tagline>

When discussing the concept and implementation of brave spaces, a lot of the conversation revolves around the idea that these spaces are inherently physical. We speak of transforming places into brave spaces, designating that certain locations at certain times are deemed an acceptable place to problematize and challenge the dominant power structures in society and the influence that they bear on our opinions and beliefs in conversation with others. What we never speak of is when we create these brave spaces within our own minds, grappling with these same concepts in a way that is more self-reflexive than would be in dialogue. Even though the majority of the time, these mental brave spaces do not come tethered to a specific time or location, they are still important to recognize as a valid form of creating brave spaces. The creation of these mental brave spaces are critical in that they allow people to take their individual connection to dominant power structures and problematize those relationships on their own terms. This is not to say that physical brave spaces don’t allow for the same sort of agency in choosing when to challenge oneself, but to argue that creating mental brave spaces allots for a more personal reflection on these dominant power structures at the pacing of the individual.

Before the rally and march for Justice for Eric Garner last Thursday, I was terrified. Not only for my life, but that I would not have the mental capacity to deal with facing the reality of racial injustice and police brutality. The conversation was everywhere, and I was actively engaged in it, but I did not know to what extent I was mentally and emotionally prepared to be a part of the activism in action. I was aware of the issues of police brutality and racial injustice, but I hadn’t ever been a part of something that had the potential to bring harm to me like the rally and march did. After deep and critical thought on the issue, and almost deciding that I could not bring myself to attend the rally and march, I decided to go. This was my mental brave space: challenging the conditioning that I’d had that caused me to fear the police as a black male-passing individual. The rally itself wasn’t designated a brave space, and there were no guidelines set up or enforced that would make it into one, but my complication of the effects of police brutality and racial injustice on me personally were what made me feel as though I was enacting a mental brave space.

Attending the protest is something that I will never regret, but I know that if I had chosen to stay home, if I had chosen to continue to exist in the fictional safety that society has constructed for those who remain complicit within a system, I would have always wondered. I can’t say that I would have regretted not attending, as I will never know, but I can say that I count myself lucky for having the tools to problematize my own fear and uneasiness and view them within the constructs of racial injustice and police brutality. Knowing how to operate within a physical brave space, and thus having the ability to create a mental brave space for myself, I believe that I was well-equipped to see why it was important in that moment for me to overcome my fear and attend the rally and march. Many of those present at the protest, without the knowledge and language of theory, were able to eloquently express the very same ideals that I’d been taught in my classes while seeming to have created mental brave spaces for themselves. Learning to navigate brave spaces, whether physical or mental, and whether taught through theory or self-learned, is a skill that I believe is becoming critical in this transformative time in our lives.

End of Semester Tips from Undergraduate Education

By Janet McGlynn

Congratulations on making it through another semester with your student. I hope your son or daughter gained new knowledge, experience, and confidence through coursework and other college activities. If your student has not completed pre-registration for the spring semester, important courses are filling up. Ask your son or daughter to register at once. Students still in their first year at UM BC, whether as freshmen or transfer students, would benefit from taking the one-credit course Introduction to an Honors University or a three-credit First-Year Seminar.

Before the break, students will need to get through final exams. New students may need to be reminded that the schedule for finals is not exactly the same as the class schedule. Finals will be held from December 11 to December 17, 2014.

The semester break is a good time for families to talk about education goals and progress. Is your student committed to his or her choice of majors or thinking about changing? Most college students change their major at least once. For insights about future careers for students in various majors, visit What Can I Do With My Major on the Career Services website.

This is also a good time for students and families to discuss summer jobs (or research experiences that will help students to learn more about potential careers. Those in the sciences, including social sciences, should consider the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship and Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) opportunities offered by the National Science Foundation . Hundreds of such programs at universities and national laboratories around the country provide undergraduate research fellowships as well as stipends for living expenses and housing. Application deadlines vary, with many in early February. Students interested in research can also explore opportunities in their academic departments (http://umbc.edu/undergrad_ed/research/myMajorResearchOUE.html).

Students and parents are invited to attend Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom and other locations on campus. More than 200 undergraduates will share results of their research and creative work in areas ranging from Dance to Philosophy and Chemistry to Physics. Watch the URCAD web page for more information.

Best wishes for a wonderful winter break.

2014 Winter Commencement Ceremonies

  <Tagline>What You Need to Know</Tagline>

With this year’s Winter Undergraduate Commencement ceremony quickly approaching, we wanted to share some additional information with the parents of undergraduate students who will be participating in the ceremony.

Undergraduate Commencement is scheduled for Thursday, December 18 in the Retriever Activities Center (RAC). The doors to the RAC will open for ticketed guests at 9 a.m. The procession of students, faculty and staff will begin at 9:40 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.

Guest Tickets for Undergraduate Commencement Now Available Electronically

Guest tickets to Undergraduate Commencement are now available electronically. Upon receiving their regalia and floor pass, graduates will be issued a unique code on their floor pass used to access their guest tickets online. If you have not yet done so, please visit graduationtickets.umbc.edu to claim your guest tickets.

Due to limited seating at the event—and to ensure all graduates have an opportunity to invite their family, friends or loved ones to attend—guest tickets are limited to four per graduate.

Each ticket issued has a unique barcode that can be used only once. Once scanned, the ticket is no longer valid and will not work for readmission into the event. We cannot guarantee that tickets purchased from others will be valid or originals and not a duplicate. We do not recommend purchasing tickets from third parties.

All individuals with invalid tickets will be denied entrance and directed to overflow seating on campus.

Ordering Regalia

If your student plans to participate in the ceremony but has not yet ordered regalia, he/she should contact the Bookstore at 410-455-3807 as soon as possible. At this time, your student will be charged $25 for expedited shipping.

Live Video Streaming of the UMBC Commencement Ceremonies

We will be livestreaming commencement for friends and family members unable to attend the ceremony on campus. The video feed will be available around 9:30 a.m. To watch our live Webcast of the event, please visit commencement.umbc.edu/webcast.

Traffic and Parking

Current construction projects may pose particular challenges this year for guests arriving by both car and mass transit. We strongly urge all guests to keep in mind the following recommendations for this winter's ceremony:

● To avoid construction, try entering campus from Hilltop Rd. or Walker Ave., just off of I-695.

● Give yourself plenty of extra travel time to arrive on campus and walk to the RAC.

● All open parking spaces on campus (except for handicapped and service spaces) are available for general parking during commencement (no permit needed); however, some lots will fill up very quickly. Administration Drive Garage will be closed to all parking except handicapped parking.

● Carpool to minimize road congestion.

For more information on alternate routes and parking see our campus maps

A: It's been my pleasure this past year to help initiate an early childhood literacy project in the Park Heights community of Baltimore, through our Chapter 22 UM-UMBC of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Working in collaboration with the Dollywood Foundation, we have raised funds for and are launching soon the first project of Dolly's Parton's Imagination Library (DPIL) in Baltimore, in partnership with the Family and Children's Services Early Head Start program. In the DPIL model, each child registered for the program receives one book per month at home from birth to five years of age. The evidence on DPIL indicates when children receive books at home, their parents spend more time reading to them; the children eagerly anticipate receiving the book each month; and the children are better prepared for kindergarten. Remembering vividly how blessed I was to have books at home when I was a child, and what that love of books and learning has made possible in my life, it is very gratifying to be part of a program that puts books into the hands of children and their parents who might not otherwise have them, with all the pleasure, enrichment and possibilities they can bring.

A: When I was studying psychology at UMBC in the 1970's, there was a two-course series required that included statistics and research design. We used key-punch machines (available now only in museums) to key in our programs on punch cards (also available only in museums); then we took the pack of cards for our assignment up to the Hillcrest Building (gone now, I believe) which housed UMBC's mainframe computers (and a Rathskeller in the basement). The computers were busy all day running the jobs required to process data for UMBC's administration, so the students could run our jobs only late at night. There was nothing more disappointing than seeing one's pack of punch cards tumble down the shoot after processing (usually around midnight) with only a page of print out with it, as that meant that some period or comma on one of the punch cards had been mistyped, causing the whole job to fail. Many a night did we students spend hunting for misplaced punctuation marks and scurrying around to re-punch cards, resubmit the job, and wait again hopefully to see if the job had run successfully so we could take our assignment to the morning class just a few hours later. On nights like this sleeping was just a dream.
