When I Was in College, I Didn't Know (Part 2)

Maybe for that reason, they feel a little less urgent to me; more philosophical, and less about surviving the day-to-day. What kind of list would I come up with now, in my (gulp) late 40s? Excellent question. I hereby challenge myself to develop that list in the coming year.

    26.

College is not merely preparation for life. It is life.

27.

People always respond to the entire context of a communication, not just to the words it contains.

28.

Criticism reveals and reflects upon the critic.

29.

In-the-moment negative emotions such as guilt or fear can be extremely useful in illuminating a situation. They can provide clues about the motives, understandings, insecurities and emotional states of other people, especially those whose behavior is sparking the negative emotions. They can deepen self-understanding. The trick is to learn to read these emotions without either suppressing or being overwhelmed by them.

30.

Sometimes the hardest thing in the world to see is what is right in front of you.

31.

People sometimes view choices you make for yourself, but which they would not (or did not) make for themselves, as judgments against them. This is all the more true if the path you choose is one which, at some level, they regret not having chosen. It is easy to be confused by their resulting hostile reactions, but it would be a mistake to be deterred by them.

32.

Every new insight subtly alters your knowledge and perspective about everything you thought you already knew. Each new experience subtly alters your perspective on every aspect of your past.

33.

You aren’t really from somewhere until you go somewhere else.

34.

Changing the world for the better does not mean seeking a stable point beyond which the world stops changing. People need to be involved in ongoing, challenging, cooperative work to advance the common good. An essential aspect of being human is confronting and contributing to the mitigation of life’s imperfections.

35.

Love involves giving and receiving permission to be who you truly are.

36.

A mouse trapped in a maze never sees the maze, only a series of straight paths and corners.

37.

Knowledge derived from breaking things or processes down into their smallest component parts is incomplete. It excludes the broadest patterns, most subtle and profound connections and deepest meanings.

38.

All people yearn, at some level, to become whole, connect authentically with the universe, be who they really are and fulfill their potential.

39.

What feels like inability and weakness may actually be undiscovered or unrevealed talent and strength.

40.

Winning an argument is not the same thing as achieving progress toward the objective at the heart of the argument. Sometimes winning an argument can hinder such progress.

41.

Staying too close to an admired person for too long can stunt one’s growth. When the admired person is nearby, adopting the person’s admirable behaviors and thought processes may feel presumptuous or unnecessary.

42.

All conscious perceptions involve value judgments and assumptions, as do all descriptions of things or situations in the world. No word can precisely express any objective meaning.

43.

A part of the judgment involved in human perceptions is the filtering and prioritization of inputs. In order to focus on the highest-priority information, people take vast portions of their experiences and environments for granted. They adapt to their environments unconsciously, absorbing and relying on a common set of values and assumptions, some of which they might reject if they ever became fully aware of them.

44.

Instincts, intuitions, emotions and dreams are extremely important sources of knowledge. The knowledge they reveal is intrinsic: located within the unconscious mind and relatively untainted by conditioning. Much intrinsic knowledge relates to people’s own true identities and deepest yearnings. The suppression of intrinsic knowledge causes depression and anxiety, and stunts personal growth.

45.

Symbols need not take the form of words, numbers and pictures. All things, people, actions and failures to act are symbols. Symbols can reveal fundamental truths because the unconscious mind invokes intrinsic knowledge to decode them.

46.

The contributions of the greatest scientists, poets, authors, artists, builders and leaders change not just our experience but our capacity to imagine. As a result of great works, there are more available thoughts.

47.

Great teachers empower students to think new thoughts, and expand the scope of their free will.

48.

Excellent teaching is not primarily about transmitting academic content from the mind of the teacher to the mind of the student, but about liberating knowledge and capacities already present in the student.

49.

True teaching transforms the teacher. True leadership transforms the leader. True love transforms the lover. True life is transformation.

While I challenge myself to write my third list of observations, I challenge you too: Write your own list, and share it when you do! Let's help each other figure things out. And if you're ready to share an observation now, put it in a comment on this post!

Intern of the Week: Laquazia Bell for Mathematics

  <Tagline>Learn about Laquazia's experience at Independent Can!</Tagline>

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Independent Can

Major(s)/Minor(s): Mathematics; Acturarial Track

Expected Graduation Year: 2016

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

As the lithography technical intern at Independent Can my first project is to find the main causes to Lost Time on their 6-unit press. Currently I have found all issues, narrowed the list to 3 main issues to focus on, determined their root causes, and now I am brainstorming and researching on solutions to eliminate or minimize Lost Time.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I live in an area that is home to many industrial companies. I looked through Google Maps to search the companies in my immediate area since I am limited by my mode of transportation. I narrowed the companies down to ones I'd be interested in and visited their web pages or searched through various job search engines to see if they had any job postings. On independent cans website I found the posting for the internship I now have and applied. To prepare for my interview I was unaware of the mock interview I could have gotten through the school. Instead to prepare I used resources another company I applied with, Accountemps, had online that gave advice on how to prepare for interviews. It was incredibly helpful and made me feel and look a bit more prepared and competent during my interview.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

Career Center, UMBCworks

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

The open atmosphere. It is my first position in a professional setting and I appreciate that at Independent Can. I am able to wean myself into the business instead of being thrust into it.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

Time to build myself. Right now I am tasked to come up with solutions to the issues that I have found, I have a deadline but I am given plenty of room to think, everyone makes me feel comfortable enough to ask the questions I need answered in order for me to come to conclusions, regardless how tedious my questioning.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

If you can, take the time to ask the questions you need to get your job done right. It's an internship and we're supposed to be learning so when we start our careers we're prepared.

Please provide a short quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

Living in a how-its-made episode everyday while learning the basics for my future career.

Staff Spotlight: Meet Susan Hindle

<Tagline>Get to know the Career Center staff this semester!</Tagline>

Susan Hindle

Role at the UMBC Career Center: I help students majoring in life sciences make themselves competitive candidates for jobs and internships.

Q: Where have you earned your college degrees?

A: I hold a M.S. from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. from University of Maryland.

Q: What program(s) did you study? How did you choose your major?

A: I majored in Elementary Education as an undergraduate. My roommate who was studying to be a teacher and knew I was unhappy with my major, said to me one day, “Have you ever considered being a teacher?” It was the one major I had not considered! My journey back then mirrors that of many others with whom I’ve worked with over the years – finding their way through trial and error. It never occurred to me to seek guidance from a professional!

I later decided to pursue my master’s degree but, unlike my undergraduate degree where I stumbled onto my major, I sought the guidance of a career counselor. That experience was through an interesting twist of fate, I was offered a full-time position at JHU’s Career Center while pursing my counseling degree. Upon the completion of my degree, I transitioned into the role of career counselor.

Q: Tell me about the job and internship process when you were in college. Were you able to find job/internship positions that were related to your major or your career interests?

A: UMD had established relationships with local counties so it was easy to find a placement for my student teaching internship. Upon graduation, UMD held a job consortium for education majors where representatives from various counties came to interview students.

For my master’s, I participated in an internship at a family counseling center in Catonsville, MD. Once again, JHU had established relationships with various counseling centers in the Baltimore region, which made finding a placement easy.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

A: I can’t say there is one best piece of advice I have received. My greatest lessons have come from life experiences. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that, while you may not be able to change your circumstances or what happens to you, you have control over how you respond.
I believe how we choose to think about and respond to events shapes our destiny more than any other factor.

Q: Why should students visit the Career Center?

A: I view one’s career as a journey, not a destination -- an ever-changing canvas that one must continually adapt to. The Career Center's mission is to help people navigate their way – much like a compass to a traveler. While you may find your way without our guidance, much like I did early on in my career -- through trial and error -- there is an easier way! And no matter where you are along your career path, the Career Center can provide the guidance you need when you need it.

Q: What is your favorite aspect about UMBC?

A: UMBC is such a dynamic place to work, it’s difficult to choose one thing. But one thing that stands out is that it is a place where ideas are welcome and where collaboration is encouraged – at all levels.

Q: What is one item on your bucket list?

A: After seeing "Riverdance", I fell in love with Irish dancing. I would love to learn how to Irish dance!

Q: What is one aspect of the DC/Baltimore area that you often explore?

A: Our family enjoys spending time visiting historic sites and museums in Baltimore and DC. We also love hiking Patapsco Valley State Park. The park is in our back yard and we hike there year-round.

Researcher of the Week: Michael Lopresti

  <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Michael...

He is a Biochemistry major and an URA Scholar. He is currently in the process of applying to MD/PhD programs. He feels it is a important role that helps transition ideas generated by research into medically relevant applications.

How did you find your mentor for your research?

I had Dr. Mendelson for Biology 142, and she discussed her research briefly during class. I was interested, so I went up after class and asked her more about it and whether she had any room in her lab for an undergraduate.

Is this your first independent research?

I had a research project in high school that examined the bioaccumulation of a pesticide through an aquatic food chain. However, it didn’t go very well because at the time I didn’t realize how much effort you had to put into research to make sure it went properly. Since then, I have had other research experiences where I learned how to really do research.

How much time do you put into it?

I usually aim for 8-10 hours each week during the school year, but it depends on what else I have going on. This summer I’m doing research for roughly 30 hours each week, it’s nice to not have much else to distract me. I can devote a larger portion of my time to it, and make much more progress.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

Dr. Mendelson suggested that I apply, but I had known students who received a URA before.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?

When I applied for my URA I was halfway through my Junior year. I had taken all of the introductory science courses and was starting to move into more major specific courses, like comprehensive biochemistry.

Was the application difficult to do?

The application was not difficult, but it’s definitely not something you should attempt to do at the last minute. I spent a lot of time making sure that my abstract and other application materials accurately described my project and what Dr. Mendelson and I planned to do.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

My research involves using computer programs, like BEAST (Bayesian Evolutionary Analysis by Sampling Trees), to compare sequences of DNA and determine evolutionary relationships. I’ve never used a program like BEAST, so it took me a while to figure out what the program was doing, and how to optimize the settings.

What else are you involved in on campus?

In addition to research, I also tutor in the Chemistry Tutorial Center, and TA for Cell Biology. Outside of science, I’m a Senator in the Student Government Association, and I work with the Admissions Office as part of the A-Team. I enjoy being in SGA because it gives me a break from science, and I get to work with other students who I wouldn’t have met otherwise.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Just do it. Make sure you know what you’re getting into, ask the PI if you can work in their lab for a bit, just to get a sense of the kind of work you’d be doing. Most importantly, be ready for some experiments to fail. It happens to everyone, don’t get discouraged.

What are your career goals?

I’m currently in the process of applying to MD/PhD programs. Ideally, I will eventually be a physician-scientist, treating patients and doing research together. It is a important role that helps transition ideas generated by research into medically relevant applications.

Read his abstract here...
