10 Tips For Success At Job Fairs: Tip of the Week

  <Tagline>By Norine Dagliano from CAREEREALISM!</Tagline>

Recently, I attended a local job fair and spoke to several of the employers to solicit their response to the following question: “If you were to offer one tip for job seekers attending a job fair, what would it be?” The two answers given most frequently? “Dress professionally” and “Communicate what you want and what you have to offer.”

This seemed like common sense to me, but considering how many employers mentioned these two things, it occurred to me maybe it goes beyond common sense and falls into the category of “you don’t know what you don’t know.”

Job Fair Tips

So, for those who don’t know, here are ten valuable tips to help job seekers find success at job fairs.

1. Dress Professionally

The general rule of thumb is to dress to fit the job for which you are applying. For some, this may mean a suit and tie; for others a pair of khakis, polo shirt, or button-down collar. It’s not okay to “pop in” to a job fair on your way home from the gym or to the grocery store. Plan your attire carefully. Choose a color that accentuates your best features and make sure it is comfortable. Sneakers and flip flops are never acceptable.

2. Communicate What You Want And What You Have To Offer

Employers are amazed at how many people attend job
fairs hoping the employer will play the role of a career counselor or engage in a game of “20 Questions.”

Prior to attending a job fair, prepare a 30-second introduction and career overview: your “positioning statement.” Include the following:

The kind of work you do

The number of years of experience you have and in what industry(ies)

Some of your areas of expertise and/or key skills

What you hope to find in your next job

Write it down and practice it until it rolls off your tongue and feels comfortable.

3. Know What The Company Does

Call the sponsor(s) of the job fair, find out which companies will be there and do some advance research. What is their product or service? Who are the customers they serve? What kinds of positions exist within the company? What skills are they looking for? Find out which employers are the best match for your skills and experience and target them before you arrive.

4. Plan Who You Want To Talk To And In What Order

You probably will not have time to talk to everyone. Look over your research notes and decide in advance which companies would be the best match for your skills and experience. Plan to visit the “maybe” companies first and save the really important ones for last. This way you can work through some of your nervousness before you present yourself to the companies that really matter.

5. Bring Your Resume

You should bring sufficient copies of your resume (printed on high-quality bond paper) for the employers you plan to target. Make sure your resume is targeted to the kind of job you are seeking, focuses on accomplishments, not responsibilities, and is two pages or less. Several employers I spoke to mentioned receiving resumes that were as long as five to ten pages! Do not fold your resume or place it in an envelope!

6. Ask Questions

The main purpose of attending a job fair is to gather information. What do employers look for in an employee? What are some of the current challenges they are facing? What kinds of positions exist within the company? How do they screen and make their hiring decisions? If you attend a job fair hoping to walk away with a job offer, you will probably be disappointed. If you attend to gather information, you will always walk away a winner! One word of caution: this is not the time or place to ask, “What do you pay?” or “What are your benefits?” These topics are best discussed when an offer has been made or is pending.

7. Be Aware Of Proper Etiquette

From the moment you enter the job fair, you’re “on stage.” Don’t smoke or chew gum. If there are refreshments, save them until you are ready to leave. Don’t bad mouth your current or last employer. (When one employer asked a job seeker why they were looking for work, they were shocked when the job seeker answered “Because <employer name> is a real #! @&#”.) Give a firm and confident handshake. Smile. Make eye contact. Turn off your cell phone. Don’t monopolize the employer’s time.

8. Make Your Objectives Known

Employer’s report many attendees seem to be “just
browsing” or are there to collect the free promotional items. Approach employers confidently. Introduce yourself and express why you are there.
Ask questions and take notes. Express more interest in the company
literature than the key rings, post-it notes, and candy bars.

9. Collect Business Cards And Take Notes

Jot down notes while the employer is talking with you. Ask for the business card of everyone you speak with. After leaving the employer’s table, make notes of what you spoke about and what follow-up actions you need to take after the fair.

10. Follow Up

Send a thank-you letter within 24 hours to each employer you talked to at the fair. Remind them of which position(s) you spoke about and stress your interest in scheduling a follow-up interview. It might also be a good idea to enclose another copy of your resume or a personal business card (not one from your current employer) that will remind them of your skills and provide them with contact information.

Keep these three objectives in mind as you go through the day: you are there to network, gather information, and solicit an invitation to an interview. Try to relax and be yourself. Employer’s hire people they like. Focus on being likable and you can’t loose at a job fair!

Brian Frey, UMBC Ph.D. student in information systems, has been
collaborating for the past several years with colleagues at Georgia Tech
University on a very simple concept: How can one infuse braille
communication with the iPhone? Over these past few years the team has
been refining their Braille Touch App
in support of that concept. Their efforts were validated with the
recent release of the Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS8. Of the millions of apps that Apple has approved for release in the App Store
since the release of the first generation iPhone, only a select few have
been tapped for inclusion as a “native” app, included in the iOS
    software package itself. Braille Touch
provides a familiar braille layout for the vision impaired user as well
as audio feedback to give the user instant feedback that they are
typing the message as they intended.

Keys to Student Success

  <Tagline>Suggestions from OUE</Tagline>

Keys to Student Success

Janet McGlynn, Office of Undergraduate Education

mcglynn@umbc.edu

At this point in the fall semester, parents want to know how to help their students complete their work, learn from their courses, and end the semester with good grades. The Office of Undergraduate Education umbc.edu/oue offers these suggestions:

1. Students have begun to receive alerts through myUMBC from the First Year Intervention (FYI) program. Alerts are sent to students in danger of earning lower than a C in a course. Ask your student to tell you about the “alert” process in myUMBC and whether he or she has received any lately. Keep asking, as faculty continue to report to the FYI system over a period of several weeks. An FYI alert will direct the student to a page of resources and advice, including recommendations that the student speak with their professors and sign up for tutoring umbc.edu/lrc/tutoring.html. It is very important that students not be discouraged at this point. There is time to make a difference in the grades they will receive, if they make changes now. It is also important for students who are struggling academically to realize that they must change their behavior and learning techniques in order to change their grades.

2. Registration for spring semester will begin soon. Students should start preparing now by reviewing the online Schedule of Classes, making an advising appointment (required for spring registration), and checking their myUMBC account to be sure they are cleared to register. An unpaid bill or missing immunization record can delay registration. Help your student by clearing up any such issues before registration begins.

3. Scheduling hint for new students: First Year Seminars umbc.edu/oue/fys/ are limited to 20 first-year students per class and are taught by experienced faculty. Students in these small classes get to know a faculty member well and may find a long-term mentor.

4. Suggest that your student consider engaging in research umbc.edu/oue/research/index.html or mentored artistic efforts—even starting in the freshman year. Research offers a terrific learning opportunity and it provides a practical foundation for classroom learning. Furthermore, students gain early insights into professional expectations and rewards and research experience strengthens a resume or graduate school application. Research can be done in any field or major. Suggest that your students attend an information session October 8th or November 7th, both at noon in Sondheim 108.

Advance Advising & Registration

  <Tagline>Planning for Spring 2015</Tagline>

Parents and families please share the following information with your student:

The Schedule of Classes will be available online October 27th and advance registration for Spring classes will begin November 3rd. Meeting with an advisor is required prior to registration.

Five Steps to Successful Advising, Course Selection, and Registration for your Student!

Click here to find out your earliest registration time for Spring 2015 classes, which is based on your earned credits (including transfer courses, but not courses in progress now).

Contact your academic major department to make an appointment to meet with your academic advisor. Make sure you meet with your advisor well before your earliest registration time. You will not be permitted to register without advising clearance. An updated list of departmental advising contacts and procedures is available here. Students without a declared major or in transition between majors are advised in the Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising (410-455-2729).

Before your advising appointment you will need to review your degree audit (in myUMBC under "Advising and Student Support") to see what courses you need to take to complete your degree program. Advisors expect that you will review your degree audit before you meet with them. For more information, click here.

Meet with your advisor to discuss your educational goals and interests, your long term plan, and your course list for Spring 2015. Your advisor will enter advising clearance for you into the registration system. You, the student, will turn that course list into an actual draft schedule with course numbers, times and section numbers.

Log on to your myUMBC account and register for your classes at your earliest registration time. Check your final schedule carefully to be certain that it reflects your intentions and the plan you discussed with your advisor. For detailed instructions, click here.

Address Registration Blocks and Holds Early!

Check your myUMBC account well in advance to be sure you have no outstanding obligations to the university that could prevent you from registering, i.e., past due balances, vaccinations, etc. If you have an administrative hold that would prevent you from registering, you will receive a separate myUMBC alert message to remind you.

Meeting with More than One Advisor

Some students may need to meet with more than one advisor. Students with double majors, minors, and pre-professional programs will obtain registration clearance from the advisor in their primary major and obtain additional advice as needed from supplementary advisors. For example, students pursuing education certificates will need to see an advisor in the Education Department. Students pursuing careers in the health professions usually need to see more than one advisor. Clickhere for additional information.

Please take full advantage of the many campus advising services available to you and do so soon. Registering at your earliest opportunity allows you to enroll in the courses and sections that best meet your needs. If you have questions or need additional advising assistance, please contact us at 410-455-2729 or by email at arc@umbc.edu.

Sincerely,
