A: I chose the term "engaged scholar," because that best captures the role I enjoy most at UMBC, but it is something of a cheat. For me, good scholarship, good teaching, and involvement in my profession and in our university all presuppose an ability to make connections. Engaged scholars develop and facilitate active, collaborative working relationships with a variety of partners and stakeholders. We recognize that sharing both the process of inquiry and the process of interpretation can produce more broadly meaningful forms of scholarship and create more memorable learning environments. We always approach our work from a position of service. So, as long as I am able to hold true to that deeply held value system and approach, I enjoy all of my roles at UMBC.

A:The most important thing I have learned during my time at UMBC is that I do not have to be afraid to try new things. I am remarkably lucky to work for a University that welcomes innovation and promotes collaboration. When I want to try something new, all I have to do is ask and I will find potential partners and a broad system of support.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: My public history students and I have been working in partnership with Baltimore Heritage, a preservation advocacy organization, since 2012. Students have provided crucial support to the two-person staff, conducting research and developing content for a smart phone application that connects visitors to historic places in and around the city. Beyond the nuts and bolts of content development, this work has had several meaningful outcomes. First, our collaboration helped Baltimore Heritage to think more broadly about the ways in which historians connect people and places. While preservationists understand the value of architectural history and the appeal of old buildings, they may not as easily recognize that the beauty of a building may not lie in its facade. It may rest in the role that space played in fostering a sense of community. Working together, students and staff bridged both perspectives. Second, our collaboration helped students connect more deeply with the city of Baltimore and its diverse communities. Every semester, at least one student expresses surprise and delight at the way in which historical exploration and collaborative inquiry can make places feel familiar and people feel connected. That is the most important lesson I can teach.

A: Every time I walk through the green space between the Commons and the RAC, I am transported back to my own college days and the time I spent lazing around in the quad. Enjoy these days!

Jack Engeman: Photographing the 20th Century

<Tagline>Come see Engeman's photos in person at Special Collections</Tagline>

John T. “Jack” Engeman may be one of the most prolific photographers that you’ve never heard of. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1900, Engeman graduated from the Naval Academy in 1924, remaining in the service for 17 years. At the outbreak of World War II, he returned to the Academy to teach engineering where he served for the duration of the war. After his time in the service, Engeman dedicated himself to photography, working on contract for the government, several airlines such as TWA and American, as well as the Baltimore City School system, among others. In his work with the airlines he saw the world, but in his work with the school system, Engeman was a witness to the impact of the 1954 Brown vs. Education decision which initiated the integration of public schools here at home. In his career, Engeman authored 12 photo essay books, and captured countless scenes of Baltimore and the world around him. His photographic and painted works were featured in a number of exhibitions, including several at the Peale Museum and the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery. Engeman remained an avid photographer until his death in 1984.

Whether you’re interested in the United States Military, airline stewardesses, priests or even the Queen of England, the Engeman Collection has something for you. The AOK Special Collections department is home to a massive collection of Jack Engeman’s books, photographic and painted works, and many of his original negatives in a wide variety of formats, from glass slides to Kodak Discs, and a massive assortment of color slides.

Images in the collection not only span mediums, but time, housing photographs from the turn of the century into the 1980's. There are a number of images of the photographer as a young man, taken between 1900 and 1930, as well as pictures taken of his own children and grandchildren from the 1940's to the 80's. The collection also contains original prints from his books (published in the 1950's and 60's), picture stories about working life- following priests, doctors, nurses, stewardesses, military officers and more- aiming to help young adults choose a career path.

Researcher of the Week: Marcus Hockaday

  <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Marcus. He is a Management of Aging Services major and his research explores the possibilities of merging technology and senior living; technology is not just for the young.

When did you join the McNair program?

I joined the Ronald E. McNair Scholar program during my senior year. I was inducted as part of the 22nd Cohort.

How did you find out about McNair?

I heard of the program after talking with two previously accepted scholars. Of the two, one of them kept pushing me to pursue McNair because I wanted a way to involve myself, as well as conduct research before entering graduate school.

What have you gained from being a McNair scholar?

Words cannot express the knowledge I have gained since becoming a McNair Scholar. Most importantly to me, I have learned how to properly research and tweak my networking skills. Also from being a scholar, I have learned to properly dine, to present at various conferences, and the dos and don’ts when applying to graduate school. McNair has helped me position myself to becoming a better student, a researcher, and a future PhD recipient.

What is your most recent (or most interesting) independent research project?

My most recent research project is working with seniors within a retirement community. During this study, seniors of a retirement community participated in a focus group on the accessibility of a stand that provides support for the “IN2L” touchscreen hardware. (IN2L provides adaptive technology for seniors.)

How did you find your mentor for this project?

I had previously worked with my mentor as her research assistant on a similar project at a retirement community. This research involved the use of technology and creating intergenerational relationships. After this great experience and knowing that my research interests are similar to hers, she signed on to mentor me.

How much did your mentor help you with your research?

Every step of the way, Galina Madjaroff was there to provide assistance. She has been a great help when it came not knowing where to start, pointing me in the next direction when I was lost, and editing my working; dubbing me the King of Commas.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

I am a hands-on and people type of person and this project allowed me to continue to be that type of person. Though I love being planted in a book, something about assisting people in-person feels more rewarding.

What academic background did you have before you started?

Before I started, I had little research experience. My major, Management of Aging Services, assisted in giving me that extra push by providing a well rounded background in writing scholarly papers. The McNair program provided a research methodologies course that helped prepare me for the actual research portion.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part of the research was the writing portion. This portion takes time to piece together, as well as going back and forth to ensure that all proofreading and edits were made.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

No matter what year you are as a student (I was in my senior year) or if you do not know how to go about conducting research, there are many resources available that can assist you in pre, during, and post. Find that one person, whether an mentor or professor, who can point you in the right direction.

What are your career goals?

I plan to obtain my PhD in management or technology with a research focus in aging. I hope bring awareness to aging and the great possibilities that lie within.

Read his abstract here...
