Sharing our lists at the start of the year has become a tradition. It's a way of holding ourselves accountable for making sure we have the experiences at UMBC we don't want to miss.

I've been able to cross a good number of goals off of my list over the past couple of years (I'm about to begin my 4th at UMBC), but I still have many left, including writing in (or even reading) the journal in the Rock Garden on campus, attending events I've yet to experience (like one of each athletic event and a concert in that beautiful new Concert Hall in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building), and exploring places on campus I've never seen from the inside (like the WMBC radio station, for example). Finally, one of the bigger items: I'd also love to host a Presidential or Vice Presidential debate at UMBC.

So what's on your bucket list?
Intern of the Week: Emily Scheerer for Computer Science

<Tagline>Learn about Emily's experience at Johns Hopkins APL!</Tagline>

Name: Emily Scheerer

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Major(s)/Minor(s): Computer Science

Expected Graduation Year: December 2014

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

The APL summer intern program is very well organized, with tours organized for the interns. Each department within APL also holds its own tours and events. My day-to-day tasks involved working on two different project teams. My first project involved developing an assessment tool for cyber military exercises. My second involved writing a tool to detect executable content using machine learning techniques.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

As an alumna of the CWIT scholars program, I had an industry mentor during my junior year. She reviewed my resume and setup a mock interview which helped prepare me for my interview at APL. At the start of my senior year, I attended the career fair and gave my resume to Scott Almes, a UMBC alumni who was representing APL at the career fair. From there, I filled out an online application, then completed several phone interviews with various APL groups.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

Networking Events (Corporate Visibility Days, Info Sessions, Arts with A Purpose, etc.)

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I've had a number of summer internships, and one of the big differences between those internships and my experience at APL was being able to work on multiple projects. I was able to work on two different projects, which gave me a great, broad taste of the
company and the work that takes place there.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

When interviewing, use the STAR method. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. Have four or five stories that all meet the STAR method and address the common questions like how you respond to challenges or an example of your leadership. Being prepared for interview questions will make you feel more comfortable and confident. You can even take them in on notecards - you're expected to bring a folder with your resumes, and you can store your notes there.

- Congratulations on your accomplishments, Emily!

A: One of the best parts of my job is that I get to change lives, seeing the amazing international people our students become after their time overseas. Our students return from their international experiences as different, more mature, more globally minded, and more critically thinking men and women. But come to my office on a day we find a student has been awarded a Fulbright grant to do a year of research or teach English after they graduate. When you've spent hours working one-on-one with a student, watching them find the right way to express their ideas, you realize on that day that your hard work is going to have a life-long impact.

A: The sense of community - among staff, faculty and students - truly makes UMBC an amazing place to work. It truly is a place where we care about each other. It's not just something you hear from Dr. Hrabowski; it's something we live and breathe every day here.

I thought he was insane, but was up for the challenge. Twelve years and 28 marathons later, I'd argue he was right.

Marathoning is generally seen as a solitary activity; I couldn't disagree more. On weekends I coach novice runners and walkers with Team in Training. We gather Saturday mornings to get our miles in, and we raise funds to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Together all of us with TNT have raised more than $1.2 billion over the past two decades for patient support and research. Solitary activity? Nope, a family trying to beat blood cancer. I can't imagine a better way to spend a Saturday.

A: My favorite spot on campus is the hill on the residential side of campus. Hill repeats (running up a hill, turning around and running down, and then repeating it a few more times) make for a great, challenging training run. The outer loop of Hilltop Circle between Center Road and Walker Avenue is the perfect distance for hill repeats. It's long and steep enough to be tough, but it's wooded and (mostly) quiet. It's fun to run into students wondering if the study abroad guy got lost that he's running up and down that hill over and over again.
