Is a Public Service Career in your Future? $ for grad school

  <Tagline>Learn More Wed 9/24 at 12 p.m. in Physics 107</Tagline>

Truman Scholarship Information Session (9/24)

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation
awards scholarships ($30,000) for graduate study to persons who
demonstrate outstanding potential for and who plan to pursue a career in
public service. Approximately 55 awards are made nationally each year,
with one award given per state and certain territories. In 2014, 24
awardees were students at public universities.

The Truman Scholarship is a prestigious award for which juniors with a
record of public service and demonstrated interest in government and
politics compete. The Foundation defines public service as employment in
government at any level, uniformed services, public interest
organizations, nongovernmental research and/or education organizations,
public and private schools, and public-service orientated nonprofit
organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or
disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment. Most Truman
Scholars seek law degrees or master’s and doctoral degrees in public
administration, public policy, public health, international relations,
government, economics, social services, education, urban planning,
conservation and environmental protection. However, all majors are eligible. For
example, some Scholars have pursued medical, physical science or even
business degrees – but these Scholars were able to clearly demonstrate
how these degrees would further their careers in public service.

In an effort to increase UMBC’s applicant pool, Tara
Yglesias, Deputy Executive Director of the Foundation, will speak with
students and faculty on Wednesday, September 24, at 12 noon in room 107
    of the Physics Building.

Please bring this opportunity to the attention of those students who
might be eligible to compete this year and of those who might be
interested in the future. If they cannot make the presentation on
September 24, they should contact UMBC’s faculty representative, Art
    Johnson, at ajohnson@umbc.edu or
5-2195. Students should have a strong GPA of at least 3.7. To apply,
students must be nominated by their institution and complete an
application, including a policy brief. Dr. Johnson and others will work
with each nominee throughout the application process.

The UMBC deadline for expressing interest in applying is October 20
but students are encouraged to speak with Dr. Johnson before then. UMBC
applicants must complete their applications no later than January 28,
    2015.

Those faculty who are interested in learning more about this
competition and UMBC’s application process are encouraged to contact Dr.
Johnson and/or attend the presentation on September 24.

Returning Women Spotlight: Carrie Cleveland

  <Tagline>What's it like to be a non-traditional student?</Tagline>

The Women's Center exists to assist all women in achieving their full potential in education, career, and personal life through academic and intellectual growth, professional development, and personal empowerment. One of the ways we work to achieve this mission is in our support services and programs for Returning Women (undergraduate students over the age of 25). The Women's Center supports these students through a peer mentoring program, targeted events and forums, and scholarship opportunities. If you’re interested in learning more about the Returning Women’s meetings or scholarships, contact us at womens.center@umbc.edu.

Who are you?

Carrie Cleveland. Social Work major, mother of three daughters, ages 9, 6, and 2.

What benefits have you experienced as a Newcombe Scholar?

I've found a community at UMBC. Being part of an amazing group of women (as a member of the Returning Women Scholars) who have such different life experiences has opened my eyes to the unique set of challenges that we all face as students. It also has made me want to share those challenges with others and make sure that we are represented on campus as well.

What do you wish traditional students knew about being a non-traditional student?

We are here for the same reason you are -- to learn. Our path may have been different (I usually say I took the long and windy road) but we want the same thing.

What do you wish professors and the university knew about being a non-traditional student?

Just because I may be older than you does not mean that I don't see value in your teaching. I appreciate you knowledge and wisdom. Also, I may miss class because I have a sick kid who can't be left in daycare or with a sitter. Believe me, I want to be in class learning but sometimes it is just not possible.

What is one piece of advice you would offer to new non-traditional students at UMBC?

Jump in! Talk to everyone. Join things. Find your people! My professors have always appreciated my participation in class, even if it's different than a younger student's may be. When I was looking to get involved on campus, I spoke to one of my teachers, Dr. David Hoffman, who understood my circumstances, but knew my passion too. He helped me find the right group of people to get involved with, which has made me love my time at UMBC even more.

    by David Hoffman

[Cross-posted at UMBC BreakingGround]

We were sitting in a circle, just inside the tree line in the woods behind UMBC's Albin O. Kuhn Library, when Cazzy made the point that got me thinking. The group had spent the morning raking, mulching and building planting beds in The Garden as part of UMBC’s Welcome Week Service Project. After we had gathered for lunch, Jack Neumeier, a senior who is President of The Garden, had explained that the project was partly about doing real work to address food issues, but also about enabling people to discover how their special talents and passions could be blended with others’ to build community and shape our world.

Reflecting on the events of the morning, Cazzy, a freshman, shared that she had been taken by the fact that the project was so obviously unfinished. Jack and The Garden’s other leaders had encouraged her to make creative contributions and help to envision The Garden’s future, not merely to play an assigned role. The recognition that she could contribute something truly her own, and be a part of making something real, public and lasting, had her feeling inspired.

When people talk about the memories they treasure most, or the careers they crave, they often focus on opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the creation of things not yet complete: to truly matter. But the feeling of actually doing so is all too rare. More often we see our circumstances and our institutions (schools, workplaces, government) as given: Things are the way they are, and our role is to embrace the good and accommodate (and complain about) the inevitable problems an imperfections.

The genius of The Garden is that its leaders embrace its incompleteness as a way of summoning the talents and passions of its potential builders. As I sat in the lunch circle, I thought about how powerful we all could be if we learned to recognize nearly every aspect of the world beyond The Garden as equally unfinished: summoning our talents and passions, our whole selves, to the work of building.
