Sometimes Taking a Survey = Making a Difference

There are many ways to make a difference at UMBC, especially if you are interested in shaping or changing campus life. Most of them involve hard work, planning and determination. But once in a while students have an opportunity to influence the future of campus life simply by offering their opinions. Next week, some lucky freshman and seniors have that chance, because they will be invited at random by email to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).

NSSE is an annual survey administered by UMBC and other colleges and universities across the United States. UMBC's Office of Institutional Research explains that NSSE "gauges the extent to which colleges are providing experiences associated with a quality undergraduate education and the extent to which students are engaging in those educationally meaningful activities." Campus leaders have used the survey results to inform decisions about changes to programs and the curriculum. The Office of Institutional Research says that among the UMBC offerings that have been created in part based on students' responses to NSSE are first-year seminars, living-learning communities, Introduction to an Honors University courses, the new student book experience and the faculty mentor program. So if you are one of the lucky invitees, please take the survey.

Researcher of the Week: Mary Li

  <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

When did you start conducting research at UMBC? How did you find a mentor and project to work on?
I started to conduct research at UMBC in February 2011. I was very lucky to find my mentor. During an Honors Orientation the summer before my freshman year, we were able to eat lunch with the professors of similar majors, so I met Dr.Liebman there. Later on in the year, we bumped into each other in the hallway, and I asked him about his research. I was interested in theoretical chemistry, and so he assigned a project to me.

What did you know about your field/project when you started? How did you learn what you needed to know?
When I started, I was only a freshman in General Chemistry, so I knew about formal charges and Lewis structures and that was about it. I had also taken up to Discrete Mathematics in high school, so I knew a little about calculations. Dr.Liebman taught me most of what I needed to know, including walking me through calculations and explaining different chemical theories to me.

Who do you work with on your project? Other undergraduates? graduate students? faculty?
I worked on my project with only Dr.Liebman and another assistant professor in Slovenia.

How did you decide to present at URCAD?
I decided to present at URCAD because this may be my last research experience at UMBC and I wanted to do something I've never done before.

Was the application difficult?
The application was not difficult at all. After completing the abstract, my professor and Ms.McGlynn made a few changes, and we were all set.

How did you know what to put on your poster?
Ms.McGlynn and Mr.Fick did a god job of giving us examples of what to put on our posters, and my research professor and I thought of some good examples to put on as well.

Were you nervous about explaining your work to so many people? How did it go?
I was not very nervous because I like public speaking. I just didn't want people getting lost in all of the equations on the board. I was a little surprised and very flattered that everyone seemed so interested in my project and in theoretical chemistry. I think they understood what I was saying, and I'm glad I got to expose people to this other side of chemistry.

Will you work in the lab during the 2012-2013 school year? How much time will you put in? Do you get paid for this? Academic credit?
I do not know if I will work during the 2012-2013 school year, because I will be in pharmacy school during that time.

What are your goals for after UMBC?
I will be going to University of Maryland Baltimore Pharmacy School, where I may pursue a dual degree in MBA, MPH, or PhD.

Would you suggest to other undergraduates that they find a research project?
I definitely would. It has been a great experience, and I learned to think more creatively about science.

What else are you involved in at UMBC?
At UMBC, I am involved with the Golden Key International Honor Society, Biology Tutorial Center, Community Orchestra, and Pre-pharmacy club, among other things.

Each individual's life is sacred, and new friendships provide the deepest of connections. So what's the most important thing I've learned at UMBC? People are amazing, so make friends and keep them. I can't ever stress the importance of finding serenity at school, away from the busy-ness of writing papers and reading data and answering problems. Even though I can't really see the stars at night at UMBC like I can in the mountains back home, it's so relaxing just to look up at the night sky and breathe.

So, Maybe

by David Hoffman

So, maybe you're one of the lucky ones whose hopes for themselves align perfectly with a specific career path. But maybe you're more like I was, once: a lot on your plate, decisions to make, your whole future seemingly at stake, and graduation already on the horizon. And maybe, to you, the so-called real world of graduate degrees and careers is as vague and remote as a continent you've never visited, or a decade in which you've never lived.

And maybe you don’t sense in yourself the interest or capacity to devote yourself to anything in particular, day after day after day, but you feel considerable pressure to just know. That little voice of doubt in your head may be saying: If you had a calling, wouldn't you be hearing it by now?

And maybe your anxiety is compounded by people projecting their hopes and beliefs onto you, so that their certainty is like a dinner ordered for you while you’re still looking for a place to hang your coat. It's frustrating, but you don’t want to appear ungrateful or irresponsible. Maybe you believe, or hope, that your tastes might change once you’ve stomached enough.

But maybe …

Maybe you are stronger and wiser than you think. Maybe for you, the very uncertainty that troubles you is an achievement, a refusal to succumb. The hardest thing in the world to know is your own heart when others have designs on it. Yet you insist on pushing to discover the path to your best self, your best contributions.

And maybe there are worlds behind the broad career categories: opportunities to carve out a niche wide enough for your hopes, if only you first gain a foothold. Maybe finding your starting point will require some casting about in the dark; some trial and some error, and patience.

It certainly did for me. I was a lawyer and then a community organizer before discovering how I could act on my passion and deepest sense of purpose in a profession, within a supportive (campus) community.

There are resources for you on campus: the Career Services Center, located in Math/Psych 212, can help you think about careers and connect you with opportunities; and The Shriver Center, on the first floor of Public Policy, can connect you with internships so you can explore. Pay them a visit.

And know that you're not alone.

If this post has resonated with you, I hope you'll make this struggle more visible, and connect with others, by leaving a comment.

On-Campus Interviews offer students a chance to conveniently interview for professional positions on campus. Employers travel to our campus for the specific purpose of interviewing preselected students for currently open positions. This is a great opportunity to interview with employers specifically interested in UMBC students and offers the advantage of a smaller applicant pool. Interviews take place during the fall and spring. The logistics (viewing positions, applying, signing up for interview time slots, etc.) are all handled via UMBCworks.

Don't miss out on employers coming to UMBC to recruit YOU this fall!
