The Best Laid Plans

    by Craig Berger

By the time I began my sophomore year in college, I had the next several decades of my life planned. My love for all things politics would carry me through my coursework, whisk me away to study in Washington, D.C. in the fall of 2004--perfectly timed with the presidential election--and then plop me down into a prestigious campaign management or applied politics graduate program. I'd learn how to craft campaign plans and messages, make some good money, and drink lots of coffee.

While I wasn't necessarily "carried" through my coursework, I did find it interesting. I was in a course on Congress that semester, and it was absolutely my favorite class. To make the next step in my plan, I needed to navigate two large steps: first, I needed to get permission from Allegheny College to study away from campus the following fall, and once that permission was obtained, I needed American University's program to admit me. Since this was what I had planned, and because I know what's best for me, I just knew it would work itself out. I wasn't worried.

I should have been. It turns out that so many people had also planned to study away from Allegheny--many in D.C.--that the competition was much higher than I anticipated. The envelope I opened was paper thin; there were no pamphlets about living in D.C., or about American's program. Just a form letter denying my application, reminding me how many students apply to study away from Allegheny each year, and how few applications the Study Abroad office is able to accept. It was a punch in the gut. I was mad. I was hurt. I was confused. Didn't they understand? I loved politics; I had to do this. They were taking a ticket to D.C. that was mine.

I'm not sure when I moved forward from those thoughts. It certainly took several weeks, maybe months. But I'm glad I did. Similar to David's post a few days ago, one opportunity led to another. I intensified my involvement in student government. When an RA position in my building became available at the end of the fall, I applied for it and was hired. With the help of these two commitments, I made a realization--"politics" wasn't something that was exclusive to the context of a presidential election or beholden to the national or state levels. Politics happened everyday, everywhere. Increasingly understanding that I didn't have to be restricted to working in D.C. or on political campaigns to get my political fix, I thought about what else I might enjoy. Luckily, I looked into this field called "student affairs" that my student government advisor kept telling me about.

Looking back, I can't help but laugh when I think about constructing such a grand, ambitious plan and ignoring the possibility that any obstacle might complicate it. I also can't believe that I was so beholden to this plan during that time, especially when I hadn't really taken the time to understand how it fit with what I really wanted out of life. After struggling with these questions, I gradually navigated myself into a great job and into a field in which I am constantly thinking and talking about politics, while also staying true to my authentic self.

Have you ever had your own "rock-solid" plans that ended up working out differently than you expected? What were they?

Summer Opportunity for Students in Education/Psychology

  <Tagline>Carngie Mellon/University of Pittsburgh: Deadline Feb. 15</Tagline>

Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have
an exciting opportunity summer research experience for
            undergradates (REU) available for undergraduates.

This REU program is sponsored by LearnLab, a Science of Learning
Center funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). We
encourage applications from students who would like to conduct
research in the fields of psychology, education, computer
science, human-computer interfaces and language technologies.
LearnLab's REU program allows talented undergraduates to spend 8
weeks during the summer in a research laboratory at Carnegie
Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, or one of our
research partners. The REU program supports LearnLab's
commitment to training a diverse set of science, technology,
            education, and psychology leaders.

Applications are encouraged from students who wish to learn to
conduct research in a modern academic research laboratory under
the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers and
experiment in real classroom environments. The REU program will
expose students to the excitement and opportunities of a
research career. This experience will provide excellent
preparation for students interested in subsequently pursuing a
Masters or Ph.D. degree. Although students from other years may
apply, this opportunity is most fitting for a student at the end
of the junior year of undergraduate studies.

Each student will receive a fellowship stipend of $4000 for the
eight-week REU program. Food, housing and travel will also be
provided. Students will conduct research in an area matched to
the interests expressed in the student's application. Guidance
and supervision of the research project will be provided by the
faculty member as well as, in some cases, a postdoctoral fellow
            and/or advanced graduate student.

Seminars specific to those participating in the REU program will
be held weekly including seminars on graduate admissions and
career opportunities in science, education, computer science and
engineering. In addition, LearnLab seminars and those held by
Carnegie Mellon's Human Computer Interaction Institute and
Language Technologies Institute and seminars at Pitt's Language
Research and Development Center will be open to the students,
giving them exposure to a wide range of research in learning
            sciences.

There are several benefits that the participating students may
receive. If the student’s research in the summer is of high
quality and has added value to an ongoing research project, past
students have been asked to be a coauthor on the research team's
publication on that subject. Addition of publications to the
resume of a graduate school applicant always greatly improves
the application. If the quality of the research is high, the
faculty member who advised the student would likely be willing
to write a letter of recommendation for the student which could
be included in a graduate school application. Research
experience in one of the National Science Foundation's premier
research centers will be viewed attractively. Finally, a summer
spent in one of the National Science Foundation's premier
project areas is a plus in an application whether it be for
entry to Carnegie Mellon or the University of Pittsburgh or to
            any other institution.

There are scholarships available for graduate work on projects
in LearnLab. The student should inquire about these
            possibilities during the summer program.

REU Program Dates: Students will begin their research experience
on Sunday, June 2, 2013 with a welcoming reception and
information session. The REU program will end on Friday July
26, 2013 with a poster session in the afternoon. Submission of
an application indicates that the applicant agrees to be present
            from June 2 to 4pm July 26, 2013 inclusive.

Application Deadline: Deadline for applications is February 15,
2013. Students will be informed of our decision by March 1,
            2013.

Minimum Requirements: Students should have a minimum of 3.5 GPA
out of 4.0 although we will consider students who show by other
measures that they are exceptional and who have GPAs over 3.2.
Class standing and grades in specific subjects that are close to
the field of research will also be considered, as are
            recommendations.

Number of slots/ positions available: LearnLab can accommodate
as many as 10 positions, although in any given year, we may
decide to fund less than 10 applicants

Five elected positions in SGA have become available: three positions in the Senate and two positions on the Finance Board. In addition, the Finance Board is looking for a Secretary to take minutes at its meetings. All of these positions, with terms running through May 15, 2012, will be filled through an application and interview process. To apply for the Senate vacancies, apply here. To apply for any of the Finance Board positions, apply here. Applications for both the Senate vacancies and Finance Board vacancies are due this Friday, February 1 at 5:00 p.m. The students selected will have a chance to gain valuable experience before applications to run for positions in the 2013-2014 SGA are due in March.

The Senate is SGA’s engine for collecting ideas from students and turning them into campus change initiatives. Members meet weekly (Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus administrators and take positions on issues. But most of the Senate’s work takes place between the weekly meetings. Members spend time talking with students, representing all undergraduates on university committees, meeting in project working groups and doing the follow-up needed to get initiatives off the ground.

The Finance Board is the branch of SGA that provides funds to support student organization activities: $200,000 this year. Most of the Finance Board’s work is done at weekly meetings, where student organization leaders present requests and Finance Board members ask questions and make decisions. These meetings, which take place Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., can be both long and intense. Finance Board members have to wrestle with complex issues: applying university policies, striking a balance between supporting amazing events and stretching funds across the entire year, thinking about the precedent-setting impact of their decisions. But they have a lot of fun too, partly because it’s so interactive and engaging.

If you have any questions about the Senate vacancies, contact Valerie Parks at parksva1@umbc.edu. If you have questions about the Finance Board vacancies, contact Samantha Spehr at sspehr1@umbc.edu.

Researcher of the Week: Abigail Rein

When did you start conducting research at UMBC? How did you find a mentor and project to work on?
I started doing research at UMBC during the Fall 2011 semester. I had a very helpful Teaching Assistant in one of my classes during Spring 2011 who was looking for some help with her research and she invited me to work with her.

What did you know about your field/project when you started? How did you learn what you needed to know?
Previous to starting this research project, I had a solid background in general psychology, but I did not know a lot about the type of community psychology that our project is based on. I learned a lot through discussion of the project with my mentors and through researching background information on the topics that we were studying.

Who do you work with on your project? Other undergraduates? graduate students? faculty?
I mostly work with one graduate student, Magda Permut, and her mentor, Professor Ken Maton.

How did you decide to present at URCAD?
I received a Travel Grant through the Office of Undergraduate Education to help fund a trip to present the research that I was doing at a conference in California. The Office of Undergraduate Education asked if I would also be willing to present the research at URCAD.

Was the application difficult?
I felt that the URCAD application process was fair and straightforward.

How did you know what to put on your poster?
The poster presentation information session led by Dr. Steven Miller greatly helped me to understand the basics of what should go on a research poster. I have also received guidance from the graduate student that I work with.

What are your goals for after UMBC?
After graduating from UMBC, I would like to enter into a graduate program and ultimately pursue research as a career.

Would you suggest to other undergraduates that they find a research project?
I would absolutely suggest that other undergraduates get involved with a research project. It can not only help you to become more familiar with certain areas of a subject, but it also encourages you to be creative and motivated. There are many personal and professional benefits that can be gained by being part of a research project.

What else are you involved in at UMBC?

I also work as a desk staffer at Potomac Hall on the UMBC Campus.

If NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller had decided to live on campus for his senior year of college, every detail of my life today would be different.

    I kid you not.

Miller had a spot reserved in one of UCLA’s residential suites that year, but he got an off-campus apartment just before school started. If he hadn’t, his departure would not have freed up a spot in that suite for me. (When I arrived with my belongings after the first week of school, my suite-mates were disappointed to discover they would not be living with a basketball star after all).

If I had not moved into that suite, I would not have become friends with my roommate Lloyd. And he would not have managed my campaign for Student Body President the following spring, almost single-handedly swinging the election my way. And if I had not won the election, I would not have felt inspired and empowered to apply to Harvard’s graduate program in Public Policy that fall.

If I had not entered the Public Policy program, I would not have met my friend Richard. So I would not have joined him six years later at a small Boston-based nonprofit running community organizing projects in cities around the United States. And I would not have been in Pittsburgh on organization business one December to meet the woman I would eventually marry. And we would never have moved to Maryland together. And I would not now be working at UMBC.

I suppose you could conclude that life is a crapshoot, full of circumstances beyond our control. But I prefer to see it a little differently: that in the push and tug of events, there are openings through which you can pass to new worlds. And in those worlds you can discover and fulfill the promise of your self; and find the path with your real name on it.

Maybe there’s just such an opening for you, in the circumstances of your life, right at this moment.

Do you have a similar story of your own—of a circumstance beyond your control that made all the difference?
