Researcher of the Week: Sonia Dalal

    <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

How did you find your mentor for your research?
As a freshman entering UMBC, I hoped to pursue cancer research and learn related laboratory techniques. I read about professors’ research in the Biological Sciences Department and then emailed professors about research I was interested in. The Meyerhoff Scholarship Program helped me to get involved in research as early as the first summer after my freshman year and I have been working in Dr. Rosenberg’s Laboratory ever since.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
Since I have a strong interest in focusing my future research endeavors on cancer biology and related fields, this project fit into my goals perfectly.

Is this your first independent research?
Though I had some research experience with NASA in high school, this was my first independent research project. It proved to be very fulfilling as I was able to learn many of the basic and advanced laboratory techniques necessary for a competent scientist.

Do you get course credit for this work?
Yes, I receive two or three pass/fail credits per semester.

How much time do you put into it?
Working on my research excited me and I put in about 15-20 hours per week during the academic year. During the summer and winter breaks I spent about 40 hours per week in the lab.

What has been the hardest part about your research?
Before working in Dr. Rosenberg's laboratory I believed that research was "black and white." I learned that research requires accepting many failed experiments. Working in the Rosenberg laboratory has allowed me to learn that although failure is a part of research, it will be overcome with experience. I have also learned how to work with graduate students and post doctoral researchers in a competitive and fast-paced environment.

What are your career goals?
I hope to pursue a M.D./Ph.D. due to my strong desire to perform research and identify solutions that benefit people.

I think every life is a work of art, provoking every witness to consider their own choices about how to live. You can develop your life-as-art to reflect your deepest values despite the risks and costs, or you can surrender your canvas to be painted by others in your name.

What lessons do you take from Patrick Canavan's story, and what kind of art will you make?
Molecular biology has undergone a dramatic revolution during the second
half of the twentieth century, beginning with the discovery of the
structure of DNA. Since then a series of technological advances has
given experimentalists the ability to make ever-more detailed
measurements of an increasing number of molecular components of the
cell. DNA microarrays, for instance, are small silicon chips spotted
with short segments of DNA that can be used to measure the activity
levels of thousands of different genes in tissue samples simultaneously.

Soon it might be possible to make large-scale quantitative measurements
in a single cell. Being able to take such global snapshots of molecular
processes has opened up the possibility of studying the changes that are
constantly going on in cells as a coherent dynamical system with
intricately interacting parts, rather than studying the parts in
isolation. Similar developments in other fields of biology have
revolutionized the availability of system wide data. Thus, the new field
of systems biology has emerged. It makes heavy use of mathematical
          tools for modeling and simulation.

Summer Programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

    <Tagline>For Students in Biomedical Research!</Tagline>

Program Description: Summer programs at the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environmentdevoted exclusively to biomedical research.

The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1200 laboratories/research projects located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Phoenix, AZ; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Detroit, MI. NOTE: the number of positions in Phoenix, Hamilton, Framingham, and Detroit is limited.

Internships cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students generally arriving at the NIH in May or June. The NIH Institutes and the Office of Intramural Training & Education sponsor a wide range of summer activities including lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, and Summer Poster Day.
