A research conference and expo for current college juniors/seniors considering graduate school
Penn State University Park | October 17-20, 2012

The College of Health and Human Development and School of Nursing invite juniors/seniors from traditionally underrepresented groups with solid records of academic achievement (GPA>3.25) and who are committed to research and education to attend an all-expenses paid conference and expo to learn about opportunities for graduate study in a college whose mission is to improve the health of individuals and communities, as mandated in the nation’s Healthy People 2020.

Conference Activities

• One-on-one and group sessions with current graduate students and professors
• Presentations from graduate students engaged in cutting-edge research
• Visits with professors and to research laboratories and departments
• Advisory sessions on applying to graduate programs
• Group meals, tours, and social events with Penn State students and professors as well as students from other colleges and universities

1) ESTABLISH YOUR UMBCworks EMPLOYER ACCOUNT (one-time process) 
Login to UMBCworks.

A. Click on the "Register" tab to create your new account and request a password

OR

B. If you would like to register for a new account and you're ready now to post a job to UMBCworks, click on the "Register and Post Job to UMBC (free)" tab.

Please use your "family" name where it asks for "employer name." It is very important that you give your complete name, complete address, phone number, and email address. Once your account is approved, you will become a contact in our employer  account titled: Misc. Household Opportunities.

Please note that all home-based positions will be verified by phone, email and property search. Once this information is verified and you respond to our phone and email inquiry, your position will be approved.

2) WAIT FOR CONFIRMATION OF YOUR NEW ACCOUNT
New account requests are reviewed by the Career Services Center staff and processed within one business day

3) ENTER YOUR JOBS
Once your new account request has been processed, you will be emailed your UMBCworks username (your email address) and password. From here on out, you'll be able to access and utilize UMBCworks to post jobs. Each time you post a position; your job will be reviewed and approved by our staff.

Name: Simmi Singh

Hometown: North Potomac, MD

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: 4 great years

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: I'm a full time, undergraduate, Biology major. I have been affiliated with the Student Government Association, the Meyerhoff Program, the International Field Research Experience to Switzerland, and Health Leads during my time at UMBC. 

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: I’m a thoughtful and proactive contributor to our campus community’s wellbeing.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: Being an engaged student at UMBC is an invaluable opportunity to learn and grow from a diverse number of experiences.  Getting out of my comfort zone, pushing myself to strive for my best, and relaxing to the max had tremendous consequences (good ones!) on my health and happiness that are truly irreplaceable.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:  Being the best student I can be requires a balance between healthy habits, hard work, optimism and passionate persistence.  I realized college can be as stressful as you make it- so I try to avoid getting too overwhelmed. This balance also included making an effort to seek great opportunities (on and off campus) that were an extension of what I care about.  

 In such a flexible time in my personal growth, the most precious insight I gained (especially when times get rough as a student) was this: learning is a mixture of success, failure, determination and persistence.  Appreciate the philosophy that one's talents and skills set the floor, and one's attitude and character set the ceiling. Reflecting on various academic, extracurricular, and personal experiences from these past four years keeps me grounded as I prepare for post-UMBC life!

A: TED talks, Charm City Community Hot Yoga, Tutti Fruitti, lots of Bollywood, and all sorts’ of research!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: The RLC was created because everyday UMBC students thought it would be cool to have a 24-7 study place.  They told the Director of the Library and lobbied a few administrative people and add a couple of years and now we have the campus’s hub for collaborative, free, and creative community learning…(or all nighters with anyone from a close friend to a stranger).  The students thought, saw, and executed the RLC project with significant investments in time, and the fruition of their project blew them away.  Besides this story, a little known fact that I’d like to share with anyone in the UMBC community is that if you think it, it can happen.  Take advantage of this fun fact and be empowered to see your own visions for your own community, UMBC, Baltimore, and beyond, through.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
I was perusing the China section of a bookstore when I ran across Leslie Chang’s Factory Girls. After reading the book, I wanted to understand how migrant workers are affected by government policy. After speaking to my mentor, I narrowed down the scope of my research to focus on the government institution of the hukou (household registration) system and how it affects migration in China.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Program? Was the application hard? Did your mentor help you?
I heard about the URA program from my academic advisor who suggested that I apply. The application was not difficult and my advisors helped me throughout the process by providing valuable feedback. My mentor was especially helpful in determining a budget for my project.

What academic background did you have before you started?
Before beginning my research, I developed language skills and have also learned about Chinese society, culture and politics. I also completed an independent study focusing on social and political developments in contemporary China. The independent study provided preliminary research and a literature review for my research in China.

What else are you involved in at UMBC?
I am also a member of both the Interdisciplinary Studies Council of Majors and the Asian Studies Council of Majors.

What are your career goals?
I plan to earn my Masters focusing on Chinese policy and work in the Foreign Service or intelligence sectors of the federal government.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Speak to your advisors and professors as they are the best resources.
