About the Workforce Recruitment Program
The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP), coordinated by the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Defense, is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and select private-sector employers with highly motivated college students, graduate students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to demonstrate their abilities in the workplace through internships or permanent jobs.

Who Can Apply?
Students and recent graduates can apply to WRP if they:
  • have a disability and are eligible under the Schedule A hiring authority
  • are a U.S. citizen or national (residents of American Samoa and Swains Island)
  • are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program on a substantially full-time basis OR have graduated with a degree on or after April 1, 2020.

Registration closes on Thursday, October 13. All application materials must be submitted on the website by October 16 at 11:59pm PST. You will need time to get your registration approved, gather your resume and transcript, and complete your application, so please don't delay!

A community can be a vital tool to help all of us get through life’s ups and downs and celebrate our big and small moments. Community Conversations is an interactive event that will help students understand the role of community in supporting their well-being and mental health. This session will center the LGBTQIA+ community and their experiences. This conversation will also highlight what it means to “show up” for others.

Time will also be allotted for questions from participants related to mental health and wellness in connection to the LGBTQIA+ community.

Happy LGBTQ History Month

LGBTQ+ History Month originated in the United States, and was first celebrated in 1994. This month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history celebrates role models, and the history of the LGBTQ+ rights and
related civil rights movements. In the United States, it is celebrated in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day on October 11.

It was founded by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. Many gay and lesbian organizations supported the concept early on as did Governors William Weld of Massachusetts and Lowell Weicker of Connecticut, who recognized the inaugural month with official proclamations. In 1995, the National Education Association indicated support of LGBTQ+ History Month as well as other history months by resolution at its General Assembly.

So why do we have Pride Month in June and LGBTQ+ History Month in October?
Wilson chose October as the month for the celebration due to National Coming Out Day. It was established as a widely known event, on October 11, the date of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights that took
place in 1987. June is recognized as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots taking place on June 28 to July 1.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Open Enrollment for health benefits begins today, October 11, 2022, and will continue through 5 p.m. on November 4, 2022. Employees who are not making health benefit changes do not need to take action. However, if you wish to continue a healthcare/dependent care flexible spending account, you must re-enroll for coverage. Also during this time, employees can enroll in and/or make changes to their health benefits; changes will become effective on January 1, 2023. In addition, 2023 is a reset year for the State of Maryland Wellness Incentives Program. Click here for additional information wellness incentives and to find out what is new for 2023.

Open Enrollment will continue to be online in the SPS Workday system. Employees should visit the Human Resources website for more information on the SPS Workday system and for detailed instructions on accessing your Workday account. The State of Maryland will send important emails via the SPS Workday system (stateofmaryland@myworkday.com) regarding Open Enrollment.

We are pleased to announce that all existing plans and vendors will remain in place for 2023.  However, the State has passed along minimal rate changes that will affect the medical, prescription, and dental plans in 2023. CareFirst, United Healthcare, and Kaiser medical plan rates will increase approximately five percent. CVS Caremark prescription plan rates will increase 10 percent for 2023. Dental plan rates will increase between 4.5 and 5 percent, depending on the plan and coverage level. State of Maryland Accidental Death and Dismemberment and Life Insurance rates will not increase in 2023. Open Enrollment rates and materials are posted on the HR Website.

Employees enrolled in CareFirst PPO and EPO plans who have concerns about coverage with Johns Hopkins should contact CareFirst’s dedicated Johns Hopkins inquiry call center at 1-833-378-2110. The information we currently have can be found on our Open Enrollment webpage.

Human Resources will host live virtual open enrollment information sessions on October11, October 20, and October 28. Employees who are unable to attend a live session will be able to view a recording that will be posted on the Virtual Resources page on or around October 28.

COVID-19 Boosters
Updated bivalent COVID-19 booster shots that target the newer strains seen in the past year are now available and can be administered at the same time as a Flu Shot.

It is important to take precautions to prevent the spread of influenza. Please take time to learn more about influenza from the CDC.

Getting a flu vaccination is again very important this year. It will help reduce the number of preventable hospitalizations related to flu, which will, in turn, support our nation’s medical community in ensuring that persons impacted by COVID-19 receive adequate and timely medical care.

Getting a flu vaccine helps to protect individuals, their households, and their communities from the spread of seasonal flu. It is possible to contract both COVID-19 and influenza.

Where else can I get a vaccine?
Pharmacies around the UMBC area and your local care provider are potential options for vaccines. Remember to call ahead to ensure the location you plan to visit has vaccines available.

 In celebration of 20 years of ADVANCE at UMBC, please join us for a screening of the compelling documentary “Picture a Scientist” with discussion and closing remarks by President Sheares Ashby on Friday, October 21, 2-4:30pm in PUP 105. PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

 

All students, staff, and faculty are invited.
