With AOK Library's Virtual Study Room (VSR), you can find community among your fellow Retrievers in an engaging and supportive study environment.

The VSR is a Discord server that is available 24/7. For access, join Discord's UMBC Student Hub and find our server under the "Social & Study" section.

What to Expect

The "group study" Channels
Our main channel is the "group study room" text channel- the place where you can do homework alongside your peers and hold yourself accountable with updates on your progress. Complain or totally nerd out about what you're working on. Share study tips. The works! It is a text channel that has the following corresponding features:
  • "group study, beats"- a voice channel for conversation and music listening. You can add songs to the queue for a collaborative music listening experience, or just listen to the music while you study!
  • "beats requests"- you guessed it. A text channel for adding your songs to the “group study, beats” queue.
  • "group study, no beats"- a conversation-only voice channel for those who don’t want music in the mix.
Other Channels
In addition to the group study channels, we’re especially fond of these guys:
  • "lobby"- a text channel for hanging out, meeting your friends, and chatting with other students and library staff.
  • "research help desk"- a text channel for asking library staff questions that you might have for your assignments and the resources available to you at the library.
Staff members will pop in every now and then to answer questions and build community. We hope to see you there!


This virtual study room is set up as a shared community that is welcoming and respectful of all. Those who engage in inappropriate behavior will be immediately removed from the room. Offensive, obscene, threatening, discriminatory, or otherwise inappropriate language or content sharing is strictly prohibited.

I am excited to share with you that yesterday Governor Hogan announced a 4.5% Cost of Living Adjustment increase for all state employees. This includes all UMBC regular faculty and staff, contingent II employees, and graduate assistants. The increase will be effective November 1, 2022, and is the result of a projected state budget surplus.


I am grateful for this support for our exemplary faculty and staff and pleased that this increase will aid in our ongoing recruitment, retention, and community building efforts. Your hard work and dedication to our mission is what makes this community so strong.

Members of the UMBC Community,

Each fall, the UMBC Police Department publishes the Annual Security & Fire Safety Report. I encourage you to take a few moments to review this important material.

In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998 ("Clery Act"), this message constitutes notification for our campus community of the availability of the 2022 Annual Security & Fire Safety Report.

This report contains crime and fire statistics that were reported to the UMBC Police Department and/or Campus Security Authorities for the most recent three years. Please note that this report tracks incidents based on location--specifically those reported to have occurred on campus, in non-campus university buildings, in property owned or controlled by the University, or on public property immediately adjacent to the campus.

The report also includes information regarding UMBC policies and practices related to campus security and crime reporting. We encourage all members of our community to report security incidents; the report describes how and to whom crimes should be reported.

In addition, the report contains information on campus resources and educational programs, personal safety tips, emergency response and evacuation, and policies regarding student discipline.

The UMBC Police Department appreciates that all members of our community--students, faculty, and staff--are essential partners in making UMBC a safe place to learn, live, and work. The UMBC community's active interest in campus safety is one of our best crime prevention assets.

Mexican writer and activist Gabriela Brimmer whose life is chronicled in the 1987 film, Gaby: A True Story

Maria Soledad Cisternas - Chilean lawyer and disability activist who was involved with drafting the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and chaired that UN Committee, and served as Special Envoy.

Tony Coelho Congressman from California and primary author and sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and celebrated its 32nd Anniversary this past summer.

Eva Middleton of Belize brought disability awareness and justice to her home country of Belize.

Vik Pineda brings activism and advocacy and awareness from his work on the west coast.

Annie Segerra (also known as Annie Elainey) cites Frida Kahlo as a huge influence and has her YouTube channel here 

Lizzie Velasquez 's Dare to Be Kind anti-bullying campaign was informed by her lived experience with her peers and online.

Our partners at the search firm Isaacson, Miller have built a community survey to solicit feedback, which you can access here.

 

In addition to the search process, the Inclusion Council and its Implementation Team continue to move forward on the work detailed in the 2020-2021 Inclusion Council Recommendation Report and with other projects focused on advancing social justice and equity work across campus. They have launched a new Inclusion Council website to share information with the UMBC community. We will be sharing additional updates from the Implementation Team soon.

Dear UMBC Community,

 

The COVID-19 Planning Coordinating Committee has been continuously monitoring the region's community risk levels and evaluating our current safety protocols. In light of the latest public health information and CDC recommendations, we are updating our campus safety protocols so that beginning Monday, October 3, masks will no longer be required in instructional spaces or other campus locations.

 

We are hosting COVID-19 vaccine booster clinics on campus through November and free high-quality masks will continue to be available at locations across campus, including at the RAC, the Library, and the Commons Information Center. We continue to emphasize that many in our community may need or choose to wear a mask and we must support each other and respect community members' personal decisions. 

 

We recommend that you also follow other personal safety measures. This includes remaining up to date on your vaccinations, staying home if you are sick, and masking for 10 days if you have been exposed to or are recovering from COVID-19.

Dear UMBC Community,

We are pleased to announce that UMBC is once again offering influenza and COVID-19 boosters on campus. Protect yourself and the community against these two illnesses by scheduling an appointment today. Vaccinations are once again provided by our partners at Safeway. They will be offering the updated bivalent COVID-19 booster, which you can receive as long as it has been two months since your last COVID vaccine.

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and UMBC is helping to raise awareness and promote effective strategies in the campus community and beyond.

Don't Ignore Suicide In The Disability Community - Learn About the Live On! Movement (abilities.com link)

Study by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine about the Association of Disability with Suicide-Related Outcomes.

What can you do if you if you are worried about yourself or someone else:

Reach out - it's not a time to be silent, connect.

Listen - no one needs to feel like they are alone - we're in this together.

Get help - there is campus, local and national support

UMBC Resources include:

Retriever Integrated Health, which has Counseling Services and more for students
Reach Out Retrievers - Online Support for Mental Health, including Peer-to-Peer resources, Togetherall, WellTrack, and Kognito

Faculty and Staff can reach out to the USM Employee Assistance Program.

For all who are  working with a mental health provider - check in and schedule an urgent appointment with that health professional.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available at any time by calling or texting 988 - different from 911 - to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

The Trevor Project provides support for LGBTQ+ community
