Turning Contacts into Opportunities
How to move from a conversation to a career connection
You went to the career fair. You collected
business cards. You had a few great conversations. Now what?
Making contacts is only the first step — what
really matters is what you do after the introduction. Turning contacts
into opportunities requires intention, follow-up, and a willingness to continue
the conversation beyond the initial meeting.
Here's how to transform a quick interaction
into something meaningful.
1.
Follow Up Within 48 Hours
After meeting a recruiter or professional,
send a short thank-you email or LinkedIn message. Mention:
- Where
you met (e.g., the UMBC Career Fair)
- Something
specific you discussed
- The
role or opportunity that interests you
This small step helps them remember you — and
signals professionalism.
2.
Connect the Conversation to Action
If you discussed a specific position, apply
soon after following up. In your application or message, reference your
conversation. For example:
"I enjoyed speaking with you at the UMBC
Career Fair about the XYZ position and have submitted my application."
This reinforces your interest and keeps your
name top of mind.
3.
Show Continued Interest
Opportunities don't always happen instantly.
Stay engaged by attending events like employer
info sessions, recruitment events, and workshops. Seeing you show up more than
once demonstrates genuine interest and persistence.
4.
Ask Smart, Specific Questions
If you attend a recruitment session, ask
questions that show you've done your research. Instead of asking, "What do you
do?" try:
- "What
skills make someone successful in this role?"
- "What
does the first year typically look like?"
- "What
advice would you give someone preparing to apply?"
Thoughtful questions deepen the connection and
leave a stronger impression.
5.
Keep Building Momentum
Not every contact will lead to an immediate
offer — but every interaction builds your network and strengthens your
confidence. Networking is a long game. The more consistently you engage, the
more opportunities will surface over time. Having an interconnected network across industries can become one of your greatest career assets.

Did you grow up speaking Spanish at home?
Do you have a family or community connection con el idioma?
Then the Spanish Heritage Pathway is for you.
The ideal Commuter Assistant is a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate commuter student in good academic standing who is outgoing, approachable, and comfortable engaging with peers. This role is well-suited for someone who is genuinely interested in student engagement, belonging, leadership, and community-building. Successful candidates are reliable, organized, and able to manage responsibilities independently while also collaborating effectively with others.
Strong communication skills are essential, as Commuter Assistants represent and amplify commuter student voices in a thoughtful and professional manner. This position is perfect for students who want to develop their leadership skills while making a meaningful impact on campus.
Time Commitment and Availability:
- 20 hours per week (minimum of 15 hours) with some early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends required
- Mandatory Tuesday availability:
- 7:30 AM – 11:00 AM
- 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Position Duration: August 17, 2026 – May 21, 2027

Title of position: Student Intern
Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities: As an intern for UCM, I do a plethora of different projects and duties. I write for the UMBC magazine which may feature anything from an alumni interview I conducted, to highlighting a new initiative at UMBC, such as the Arts+ Initiative. I also assist in photography, make flyers to feature weekly campus events and athletics, interview different school clubs for social media highlights, and so much more!
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I heard about this internship position from my scholarship director (Linehan Artist Scholars) in the summer of 2025. They provided me with the link to the application on Handshake, and from there I submitted my materials. The materials included a photo and caption, a writing sample, and my resume. After that was submitted, I was fortunate to be invited to a video interview. For the call, I needed to come prepared with three questions I would ask a UMBC students for a hypothetical story. Shortly after the interview, I was told that I had gotten the position for Fall 2025 through Spring of 2026!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I have enjoyed the most in this internship position has been getting to take pictures and feature the really awesome events UMBC holds for its community. So far, getting to create a feature about the UMBC Homecoming and Family Weekend was my favorite, and an absolute blast!
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Through my work, I am grateful to have been able to highlight some really incredible people in the UMBC community and help them get their time in the spotlight. I feel that a lot of these features are eye-opening to the community, and this platform I have been given to share helps important stories be told and heard.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
For an internship such as mine, I would advise that they focus on their writing skills and learn from their mentors all that they can.

Good Morning Commuters (GMC) takes place every Tuesday from 8:30–11:00 AM *except one a month when Good afternoon Commuters (GAC) is held* and is complimentary with your Commuter Gold Card.
