Diabetes is included in many working definitions of ‘disability’ and under federal law, Diabetes is protected as a disability.4 However, peoples living with Diabetes (of all forms) often report feelings of exclusion from disability-aligned communities and experience difficulty accessing community support due to the high amounts of social stigmatization, harmful stereotyping, and the common (false) assumptions of Diabetes to be a ‘nonserious’, ‘poor lifestyle’, and/or ‘laziness-driven’ disease. 5,6,7 These damaging sociopolitical misconceptions and rhetoric about the Diabetes community effect those on the inside by making it more difficult to integrate Diabetes into one’s health management behaviors and personal identity, often leading to poor clinical outcomes and self-management practices. 6,8,9,10

To address these barriers in which make it more difficult for peoples with disabilities / disabled peoples show up in the world, including those with Diabetes, the UMBC Delta Alpha Pi (DAPi) International Honor Society is hosting a community dialogue on Friday, April 29th from 6-7 pm (via. Google Meets). This event is offered as a space to welcome: (1) cultivation of conversation aimed to generate community and a greater sense of belonging through the act of sharing of lived experiences with disabilities, (2) raise awareness of the negative impacts of stigma as it pertains to disabilities and Diabetes, and (3) explore the dynamic interplay between factors which influence how connected we feel to the disability community through a series of pointed questions that are inspired by discussion topics from various media publications (e.g., blogs, podcasts, research articles, etc.)

All are welcome to attend this event as long as those attending support peoples with disabilities / disabled peoples and respect their lived experiences with disabilities. Resources at UMBC that support

Reminder: PMP Forms are Due on May 6, 2022

To Supervisors:

Just as a reminder, the PMP process for this year runs from April 1, 2021 through March 31, 2022. Supervisors are required to complete and submit a PMP form, offering an evaluation for each of their regular Exempt and Non-Exempt direct reports for the 12-month period stated above. The deadline for submitting these evaluations is Friday, May 6, 2022.

Many of you have been successfully utilizing our process through DocuSign, which allowed us to capture the necessary signatures and approvals for the PMPs. For those who have not yet had an opportunity to submit a PMP via DocuSign, it is important to remember that a discussion with the next level reviewer and the PMP review meeting with the employee should take place prior to initiating the online DocuSign process for signatures.

After the PMP form is reviewed by the appropriate approver and presented to the employee, you are ready to submit your completed PMP through DocuSign using the hyperlink above. For ease of submission, you will need the employee's ID (this can be found in the Directory), as well as the employee's PeopleSoft department number. Please save the PMP form attachment using the following format: Employee's Last Name_First Name. For example, Doe_John.

Additional tools and resources, including the PMP forms, can be accessed here.

Questions around the PMP process should be directed to Michale S. Registration is now open for the NIH Career Symposium, a FREE event for all postdocs and graduate students in the biomedical sciences.

15th Annual NIH Career Symposium - May 11-13, 2022 - 11 a.m. - 5:45 p.m.

The NIH Career Symposium highlights the diversity of career choices available to biomedical researchers today. Whether you are a new graduate student, postdoc, or clinical fellow just starting to consider career options or a senior student/fellow ready to look for a job, the NIH Career Symposium is for you!

Over 250 speakers have been recruited for you to network with. Each day will begin with an intro on each sector (career options, being a competitive applicant, resources for success). This is a great way to jumpstart each day and plan for what evets you would like to attend. You then will have the chance to network with professionals in a variety of jobs, participate in informational interviews which will help you identify your career of choice and the steps required to break into this field. We will host a series of Zoom rooms for career conversations with one or two speakers. Multiple rooms with speakers in similar career paths will run concurrently. The goal is for each room to have no more than 15 participants, giving every attendee ample time to connect with a professional. Participants will have the ability to move through the "rooms" as they like, meeting a speaker, asking questions, or even just listening to see if a particular career path looks enticing. NOTE: Discussions will NOT be recorded.

There will be a workshop on "Why Career Choices are so Hard; a practical guide for navigating the career" on Wednesday afternoon, and a workshop on Thursday afternoon on Current Hiring Trends.

May 13 - For the Love of Science Careers

Closer to the event a guide will be sent to those registered on how to navigate these rooms for informational interviews (including seed questions).

This year, the event will be hosted through an online platform to make it easier to provide more interactions between participants and speakers. You are welcome to attend every session, or just those in which you are interested.

The newly formed Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD) at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is offering a two-year unique, research-intensive master’s level fellowship program to build a stronger, more diverse and inclusive community in biomedical data science. The goal of this program is to cultivate the next generation of data science and bioinformatics professionals at CARD. Fellowship awardees will gain foundational knowledge in data analysis and data management through collaborative online instruction and research performed at CARD with experts in the field of Alzheimer's and related dementia research. Beyond their coursework, as members of the research team, fellows have the opportunity to utilize and refine new skills while working with real data curated at CARD. Information about the CARD mission and philosophy, scientific themes and structural priorities, as well as mentors, can be found on the CARD website.

Three application cohorts will be administered over the course of three years; each cohort will start in the Fall semester of 2022 (Cohort I), 2023 (Cohort II), and 2024 (Cohort III). Application dates for Cohorts II and III will be posted in the spring of the corresponding year.

The following information provides details on who is eligible for this exciting opportunity and the eligibility requirements, admission requirements and how to apply for the fellowship program, proposed coursework, and timelines for completing the CARD and UMBC applications. Watch the video of the Virtual Information Session for additional information about CARD, research and mentoring at CARD, and to better understand the framework for blending FAES and UMBC courses. The FAQ page also includes answers to a variety of commonly asked questions that may not be otherwise covered on this page.

U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Legal Residents: Selected candidates will receive a full-time Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) Student (Academic) Fellowship to work at CARD for a total of two consecutive years. During this time, selected candidates will get trained in data analysis while studying the MPS degree. The fellowship will cover costs of the MPS degree (except for books), including a paid stipend while working at CARD.

Candidates with no intention of working at CARD are not eligible for the fellowship. However, they can pursue the MPS on their own by applying directly with UMBC.

The program is a 30-credit hour professional graduate degree with a mandated minimum GPA of 3.0. This two-year degree/fellowship program will allow qualified students who take specified FAES Data Science and Bioinformatics courses to transfer up to 15 credits to UMBC’s MPS in Data Science.
