Last Day to submit a Test Room Booking request in Accommodate is coming (December 5th)

    <Tagline>Finals must be scheduled ASAP</Tagline>

Please schedule SDS finals now to avoid time conflicts! Read to the end of this message!
For students with SDS testing accommodations at the UMBC main campus, please use our Accommodate software (for more info - https://sds.umbc.edu/accommodated-testing-2/) to schedule your final exams.

During finals (December 11th, 12th, 15th, 16th, 17th), SDS will be open for testing between 8:30 am and 6:00 pm each testing day.

Remember that most finals must be booked in SDS by December 5th but no later than December 9th (the last day of classes).

You should schedule all of your finals NOW. We may run out of space but can advocate for additional rooms for Finals if we know the demand in advance. Please?

For students registered with SDS who take classes at Shady Grove (USG), please follow the directions on the USG testing website at https://shadygrove.usmd.edu/student-affairs-career-readiness/studenttesting. In general, USG test request forms must be submitted at least seven days before the exam date. The finals schedule for UMBC-USG course is included in the Regular Final Exams schedule linked below.

Important Notes:

Online finals: If your course is online, then your final exam is likely to be online. Your instructor will set extended time in the testing platform, and you do not need to schedule it in SDS unless your instructor requires that it be proctored or you need accommodations that can't be used in the online test.

Common Finals vs Regular Finals:

Check the Common Finals schedule first - if your course is not listed then check the Regular Finals schedule.

Both schedules are linked below.

Also, check your syllabus for each class to determine if your class will have a final.

Most finals are 2 hours long, so your extended time will be longer than usual. You must check that your finals do not overlap or exceed testing center hours when you apply your extended time.

Scheduling Conflicts?: If your final exams will overlap in time or if you have more than two finals on one day, please communicate this information directly to your instructors with your plan for how you would like to schedule your test time with accommodation(s). If there are any difficulties in scheduling alternate test arrangements, don't hesitate to contact SDS for assistance.

Also, please remember that your instructor must email SDS at disability@umbc.edu to notify us of their agreement to your test time when it differs from your class's scheduled test day/time.

The registrar's office may have changed the the finals schedules since they were first published. Please double-check your final exam times and locations (if you are not scheduling in SDS) with your instructors.

You cannot schedule exams in SDS (or DSS at Shady Grove) unless you submitted a Semester Request for Fall 2025 in Accommodate and had your Letter of Accommodations sent to your instructors.

Don't hesitate to get in touch with our office via email (disability@umbc.edu), phone (410-455-2459), or drop by (Math/Psych 212) if you have any questions or if we can assist you in scheduling your finals on the Main Campus.
~~Student Disability Services
Resources:
Scheduling a test at UMBC main campus SDS instructions: https://sds.umbc.edu/scheduling-exams-in-accommodate/

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization
Name): Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory

Location of the Organization (City, State): Laurel,
    MD

Title of position: Software Engineering Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

I had the opportunity to intern for a group that developed
and managed a data analytics software. Throughout my internship, I mainly
worked on adding smaller features for the program. My main task was to create a
summary tool to highlight the differences between data types to streamline
workflow for analysts. My day-to-day mainly consisted of stand up meetings with
the whole team, check-ins with my mentor, and coding.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

I learned about APL through the career fair hosted by UMBC.
Initially, I applied to around 3 intern positions for APL, which did not work
out. In December, I applied to another intern role at APL that I found on
Handshake and got an email to schedule an interview in January. The interview
was mainly behavioral questions, where I discussed my previous experience and
    skill level.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

My favorite part about APL was the group's welcoming
atmosphere and flexibility. As an intern, I was given the flexibility to choose
from different tasks of varying difficulty and give my own input on features
and tasks to work on. On Fridays, I was able to work from home and was given
the flexibility to choose my times to come in and leave work.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

I believed that I made an impact by developing tools that
made analyzation faster for analysts. My tool will save analysts significant
time when they are comparing and creating new data types.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

My main advice would be to not give up and keep searching
for roles. A lot of internships come out during the fall season but it is not
the end of the world if you do not land one then. My internship interview and
offer came during an unexpected time. Make sure to look out for the various
opportunities on campus such as teaching assistant and research assistant
positions. I think the main reason I got my internship was because of my
    research experience.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

I loved how this internship gave me the opportunity to work
alongside highly skilled professionals and grow my technical skills. The Career
Center's resume review sessions and resources played a big role in helping me
    land my interview and internship.

Zoya Syed: RESEARCHER OF THE WEEK!

I am investigating how MAPK15, an atypical protein kinase, contributes to the growth and metastasis of ovarian cancer. I hope to determine its mechanisms by purifying the protein and conducting experiments to observe which proteins it interacts with in an in vitro system. I am also studying the effects of MAPK15 overexpression in ovarian cancer cells through conducting

experiments that measure cell proliferation, adhesion, migration and invasion.

Because MAPK15 is commonly overexpressed in ovarian cancer patients and its

overexpression shows increased cell growth in vitro, it has potential to be a novel

therapeutic target.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

Dr. Achuth Padmanabhan from the Biological Sciences Department is my

mentor, and I was connected to him through my former PI after I expressed

interest in cancer research and cellular biology. Dr. Padmanabhan has an

exceptional work ethic, and his enthusiasm for driving research on ovarian

cancer as well as the fascinating research being conducted in the lab really drew

me to work with him. I am also grateful to be working under PhD candidate

Fatimah Alfaran, who has taught me how to not only be an effective scientist, but

a motivated and enthusiastic one.

How did you become interested in this project?

I had spent the previous summer at the National Institute on Aging conducting

research that involved cancer cells (specifically observing DNA damage in HeLa

cells) and became intrigued with the mechanisms by which these cells continue

to spread and circumvent numerous cellular checkpoints. My research up until

that point was predominantly in fruit flies, and although I admire those little bugs

for how easy it is to manipulate their genome, I found that the cell model

produced quicker and more easily interpretable results. I am also deeply

passionate about advancing women’s health research and wish to contribute to

improving patient outcomes for many women struggling with this aggressive

gynecological malignancy disease. For me, ovarian cancer research lies perfectly

at the intersection of my scientific interests and personal motivations for being a

scientist.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part of working as a researcher is picking yourself up after numerous

failed experiments and reminding yourself why you are doing research in the first

place. It is easy to love research when everything is going smoothly, but often,

research is slow, repetitive, and does not work, and your hours spent toiling away

in the cell culture room or pipetting until your thumbs are numb can amount to no

tangible data. However, appreciating the process and letting your failures direct

you to new experimental paths is what makes a resilient scientist. It is important

not to confuse your experimental failures with personal ones–the two are

completely separate, and your worth as a researcher does not depend on the

data you produce or if your experiment succeeded.

What has been the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part of research is being able to see your months of hard

work come together, whether it is in the form of a presentation, publication, or a

random late night “a-ha!” moment where all the dots in your project miraculously

connect. This reignites your spark for science and sends you down a path of

intellectual discovery (and often a literature rabbit hole).

How will you disseminate your research (URCAD presentation, conference,

publication, etc?)

I am presenting at ABRCMS 2025 in San Antonio, Texas. I will also present at

URCAD next year and write an honors thesis on my project.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

I would advise students to reach out to professors as early as they can and to

reach out to as many people as possible. I was very grateful to get my first

research position during my freshman year, and as a current senior, I can say

that it really enriched my college experience and made me a motivated student.

Don’t be afraid to hear a couple rejections before you land a position, it’s all part

of the process and you will end up where you need to be! Also, do not be afraid

to pivot to a new research direction or lab if your interests change.

What are your career goals?

I will pursue a PhD in cellular, molecular, and/or cancer biology, eventually

becoming the principal investigator of my own lab or pursuing an administrative

position in industry in which I can directly contribute to the advancement of

science!

Know Your Worth: Researching Salaries

<Tagline>Learn how to navigate offers and negotiate with confidence.</Tagline>

Landing a job offer is exciting — but before you accept,
it's essential to understand what that offer really means. Salary negotiation
isn't just about the number on your paycheck; it's about knowing your value,
understanding industry standards, and ensuring you're being compensated fairly
        for your skills and experience.

1. Do Your Homework Before You Negotiate

Before discussing salary, research what professionals in
your field typically earn. Use reliable sites like Glassdoor, Salary.com, PayScale, Vault, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational
Outlook Handbook to find salary ranges based on job title, location, and
experience level. Knowing these figures helps you confidently advocate for
        yourself during negotiations.

2. Consider the Whole Offer

While salary is important, it's only one part of your total
compensation package. Benefits like health insurance, retirement contributions,
paid time off, and flexible work options can significantly impact your overall
satisfaction and financial well-being. If you're interested in an advanced
degree, tuition benefits are an option as well. Don't overlook these when
        comparing offers.

3. Be Strategic About Timing

The best time to discuss salary is after you've
received an offer but before you've accepted it. Once an employer has
decided you're their top choice, you're in the strongest position to negotiate.
Approach the conversation with gratitude and professionalism, emphasizing your
enthusiasm for the role while making your case for fair compensation.

4. Practice Makes Professional

Negotiating can feel intimidating, especially if it's your
first job offer. Practice your talking points with a friend, mentor, or practice
        with the Big Interview
training platform or through a Salary Negotiation
appointment with a career advisor to build confidence. The goal is to sound
        informed, not demanding.

For example: "Based on my research and the market value for
this position, I was expecting a salary closer to [X range]. Is there
        flexibility to adjust the offer?"

5. Get Support and Keep Learning

The more informed you are, the more confident you'll feel
navigating offers and negotiations. The UMBC Career Center provides tools,
resources, and one-on-one advising to help you make smart decisions about your
future. In the meantime, check out our newest Career Guide for
detailed tips on evaluating offers, researching salaries, and mastering the art
        of negotiation. You got this!
