its creation in 2008, Rare Disease Day has played a critical part in
building an international rare disease community that is multi-disease,
global, and diverse– but united in purpose.

Rare Disease Day is observed every year on 28 February (or 29 in leap years)—the rarest day of the year.

Though
Rare Disease Day is patient-led, everyone, including individuals,
families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, clinicians,
policy makers, industry representatives and the general public, can
participate in raising awareness and taking action today for this
vulnerable population who require immediate and urgent attention.

By
Sharing your colors via social media, events, illuminating buildings,
monuments and homes, by sharing experiences online and with friends, by
calling on policy makers and shining the light on people living with a
rare disease, collectively we aim to change and improve lives of the 300
     million people worldwide.

Historically, ADS has worked with campus sustainability efforts in recognition in a way that mirrors the United Nations Resolution on Persons Living with a Rare Disease and their Families

The
overarching goal of the UN campaign is to recognize that People Living
With Rare Disease (PLWRD) are an overlooked population requiring
immediate and urgent attention, and global and national policies that
address their needs and contribute to achieving the UN 2030 Agenda, the
Sustainable Development Goals and their pledge to ‘leave no one
    behind’.

The 300 million
PLWRD around the world and their families face common challenges in all
aspects of their daily lives. As a population with increasing
vulnerabilities, they are disproportionally affected by stigma,
discrimination and social marginalization, within their social
environment and in society at large. The paucity of knowledge and
expertise on rare diseases and the lack of awareness of the challenges
faced by PLWRD mean that they are psychologically, socially, culturally
    and economically vulnerable.

There are a number of synergies between the rare disease community’s needs and goals, and those of the UN 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals , mainly the following ones:

Challenges affect the whole family and cause overall increased isolation and impoverishment (SDG 1);

PLWRD lack access to appropriate diagnosis and lifelong care and social support (SDG 3);

PLWRD
face challenges in accessing education at all stages of their life due
to inaccessibility of facilities and non-adapted teaching methods (SDG
    4);

Women living with a rare disease face more difficulties in
accessing care and, when a member of the family lives with a rare
disease, the primary unpaid care role is most often assumed by women
    (SDG 5);

PLWRD and their families face challenges in access, retention and return to employment (SDG 8);

The
disproportionate level of vulnerabilities means PLWRD face stigma,
discrimination and lack of opportunities for inclusion in society (SDG
    10).

https://www.rarediseasesinternational.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Concept-Note-UNGA-Resolution-on-PLWRD-FIINAL.pdf

At UMBC the Office of Accessibility & Disability Services can be a resource for co-creating a disability-friendly community on campus, including these processes:

Student Disability Services works with academic accommodations

Work-related Accommodations for faculty staff and student employees are administered here

Accessibility Concerns may be reported online via this link

How Volunteerism Helps with the Job Market

<Tagline>Why jobseekers should consider volunteer work</Tagline>

If you're looking for ways to enhance your resume and become more appealing to employers, look no further than your local non-profit or community organization. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, volunteering gives candidates a 27% higher chance of employment.(1)

Still not convinced? Here are five ways
that volunteerism can help with your job search:

Acquire New Skills. As a volunteer, you
can help organizations with tasks that you wouldn't be exposed to otherwise.
These can be hard skills such as marketing, event planning, or accounting, or
transferable skills such as leadership, communication, and team building.
Either way, you can learn new skills, or build off of old ones to make them
          even stronger.

Expand
Your Network. As a volunteer you can tap into new networks and gain access
to career expertise and knowledge. Through this new group of contacts, you can
schedule informational interviews to learn more about their career trajectory.
Who knows, these interactions may even lead to your next job.

Try Out
What You Like. If you're making a pivot to a new career path, or you want
to try something completely new, volunteering allows you to try out a new
industry or career field in a lower stakes environment. By determining whether
you like what the work entails, you can gain the information you need to decide
where you want to go next.

Keep Up
with Market Trends. Volunteering in a field you're interested in allows you
to keep a pulse on the latest trends in that particular market. By staying
current, you'll be able to speak to these trends in a cover letter or
interview, which makes you a stronger overall candidate.

Enhance
Your Resume. It can be hard to believe, but volunteer experiences still
count as experience. If you're unable to volunteer with a community organization,
you can volunteer with a faculty member as a research assistant. By engaging in
volunteerism, you can add projects and experiences to your resume. You can also
use your volunteer experiences as part of the STAR technique
          in interviews.

Volunteering can make you feel good for multiple reasons: you're helping an organization who needs it and you're working for a good cause. By being
more strategic with your volunteerism, you can feel fulfilled personally, while
          working on your career path.

Learn more about opportunities working for an organization
that relies heavily on its volunteers, the American Red Cross, at the Career Corner

Make a Major Statement with a Minor/Certificate Program

Have you changed your mind while taking courses for
your major or have transfer credits from subjects outside your major? Maybe you've
grown to like a new subject while taking general education coursework?

Harness the full potential of extra electives by
completing smaller programs alongside your major--aka Minors and Certificates
    (U.D. Certs).

UMBC offers a
variety of options for minor programs and certificate programs at the undergraduate level.

NOTE: Not to be confused with graduate certificates,
all undergraduate minors and certificates must be done in conjunction with an
undergraduate degree program. However, this stipulation presents many
advantages to your academic journey at UMBC.

Here are the top reasons why you should consider
adding minors and certificates to your undergraduate career:

Most
minors and certificates contain about 6-8 courses as requirements and may
partially overlap with other requirements coinciding with your GEPs or
         major coursework.

NOTE: Some minors (I.e.,Minor in Social Welfare) are not eligible for students already
majoring in the related bachelor's program (I.e.,Social Work, B.A.). Likewise, some programs limit how many
courses can double count or come from transfer coursework-- Always ask an
    academic advisor before making assumptions!

Instead
of taking on a double major, a minor or certificate could help manage
graduation timelines while incorporating multiple academic disciplines.

Declaring
minors and certificates are great ways to reach upper-level elective
minimums and work towards other general graduation requirements tailored
to an additional field of interest (e.g.,Intercultural Communication,Media and Communications Studies,
         etc.)

Going
beyond your major requirements to complete a minor or certificate is a
solid avenue toward expanding your undergraduate academic credentials and
         diversifying your professional portfolio.

NOTE: Some of our minors and certificates are designed
to equip you with foundational knowledge for niche industries (i.e.,Entrepreneurship,Health, Wellness and Aging,Security Studies, etc.)

Discuss adding a minor or certificate at your next
academic advising appointment. Enhance your UMBC experience by broadening your
network with students and professors you may have never encountered in your
major alone. Doing so indicates your successful completion of an "extra credit" program that could be a game-changer for your resume/CV, job interviews,
    professional/graduate school applications...you name it!
