*We are the Student Events Board (seb) and we are looking for you to be a part of seb Committee! We want people with ideas, quirky personalities, artists/graphic designers, and anyone with a desire to make UMBC a more fun & eventful place. We plan, program, and market over 150 events a semester (including Welcome Week, Homecoming, and UMBC’s Spring festival Quadmania) and manage a big budget to make the things you want to see happen on campus. You can be a part of this process by applying by September 9th! No experience necessary. (Really, we mean it.)

Our Committee is like our street team - you'll have a chance to learn from our expert event planners and meet a really diverse cross-section of the UMBC campus! You'll be in the front seat to making the UMBC campus yours! Anything and everything is a possibility.

As of now, our application (which is super simple, we promise) is not available. Data from this analysis will be used to better understand pointing problems individuals with motor impairments experience when using a computer, and build systems to accommodate their needs.
Students will test pre-existing computer vision software to analyze screenshots of real world computer interfaces. Depending on interest and skill, students may also work to help design new computer vision techniques to analyze data, or design a database to hold multiple types of information gathered about pointing data.

Project Details and Eligibility Requirements
 
Status and Compensation: Open to both undergraduate and graduates students in Information Systems or Computer Science. Undergraduate students can do this research for credit as IS400 or 469; Masters students can register for IS/HCC 700; and PhD students can register for IS/HCC 801.

Skills: Students with programming knowledge is required. Relevant programming skills include PERL, shell scripting, and image analysis (OpenCV). Computer vision, machine learning, or MySQL experience a plus.

Deliverables: Students will be required to post their progress on this project to a blog, write a 4-page paper at the end of the semester, and publish code they develop as open-source.

Time Commitment: Students interested in working on this project should be willing to commit 10 hours a week. Work time will be flexible, but the student will be expected to attend group meetings and meet with the advisor once a week.

If you’re just starting here, the first thing to know about UMBC is that it is neither a collection of buildings nor a catalog of courses, but a confluence of stories. Each of us has one: we started somewhere else; we lived, and we learned.  We all arrive at UMBC with something to offer. UMBC’s tremendous diversity signifies many things to us, not least that each one of us—student, faculty or staff member—has something that we can, and must, contribute to make this community whole. Each of us can be and become our best selves here; each of us belongs.

For newcomers, a part of what this means is that you are inheriting a collective story—our history in progress—to which your story is now joined. UMBC came into being a little less than 45 years ago, and its founding era lives in the memory of people still on campus every day. We are a community of pioneers.  Our founding faculty members were brilliant, young and energetic. Our culture was inclusive and democratic: UMBC didn’t even lay sidewalks until campus planners observed where and how people wanted to walk. We started in the shadow of College Park, but have developed a distinctive identity of our own: an honors university, a hub of innovation, a mosaic, nimble, up-and-coming, a caring community constantly being created by its members. By you.

You’ve arrived at an auspicious moment: a time of growth and change. We’re a year away from opening the new Performing Arts and Humanities Building (which will be the largest on campus), and are looking ahead to expanding our science facilities. Plans are taking shape for a wave of new opportunities to make a difference on campus and beyond. In your time we will be asking ourselves: What do we want to be, and what shall we commit ourselves to accomplishing together, by the time of UMBC’s 50th anniversary? That future is your future too.

So welcome! I’m glad you’re here at last, and I’m looking forward to all that you have to share.
