Researcher of the Week: Daniel Graham Undergraduate researchers explore their interests! In early 1953, the North Sea was experiencing uncommonly high tides for the season. On the evening of January 31, this high tide combined with a tidal surge and a fierce windstorm to inundate over 1,000 square miles of the Netherlands, and over 350 square miles along the coast of England. Within six hours, the flooding claimed the lives of nearly 2,000 people in the Netherlands (primarily in the provinces of Zeeland and South Holland), and over 500 British people drowned in the flood waters. The circumstances of the North Sea flood of 1953 shares a number of important similarities with the flooding of New Orleans in 2005 arising from Hurricane Katrina. My study will consist of a comparison of the North Sea disaster of 1953 and the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe of 2005. I will consider water-management efforts in the Netherlands, Great Britain, and the United States, and will analyze the events of each flood in light of these efforts. I will further investigate and compare flood responses in each country.

Patrons have been reporting problems accessing their library (catalog) accounts. This problem has been reported to ITD and we are waiting for a response.

Here is a brief description of the problem. When you try to log into your catalog account (either through the 'My Library Account' link on our website our through the 'my account' link in the catalog) the log in process starts as expected. You are asked to select your campus, then you get taken to the UMBC single sign-on screen (if you are not already logged into a UMBC account). After logging in you get a blank screen for a lengthy time which eventually switches to a basic catalog search, but it doesn't show you as being logged in you and have no access to your account.

We have a similar problem with Research Port. You are able to get into Research Port both on and off-campus. From on-campus, as long as you don't try to log into Research Port, everything seems to work fine. If you try to log in (either on or off-campus) it doesn't show as being logged in (your name doesn't appear) and there is a limited selection of databases available. The odd thing is that when we access the databases from off-campus via the proxy links on our website we are able to log in with no problem.

I remember when I was a college student hearing members of the faculty and administration talk about how much they had learned from students.  I didn’t believe a word of it.  It seemed like a throwaway phrase, appropriate to certain occasions but not to be taken literally, much like when someone winning an important award would contend that they had been “humbled” by the recognition.  

Now, decades later, I’m genuinely humbled to realize how wrong I was.  I learn from UMBC students all the time, and I’m particularly mindful of their lessons this week as some of those who have taught me the most are getting ready to graduate.  The truth is that I’m not the complete, polished master of my circumstances that I once imagined most adults to be.  Like every other person I know, I’m still learning how to live, and how to be my best self.  And students, even (especially?) when they have experienced themselves as underprepared, overwhelmed or confused, have taught me plenty.

The most powerful lessons I learn from students come in two contexts.  One is when they navigate everyday challenges on campus: choosing a major and a career path, dealing with an uncooperative peer, striving to build a positive culture within a student organization, balancing conflicting responsibilities.  The contours and nuances of these challenges are the stuff of life, not just on campus but everywhere.  So when I work with students as they figure things out, I identify strongly with them.  Their successes and setbacks help me understand my own.  And when despite the uncertainty and ambiguity they take action that is profoundly wise, or courageous, or self-sacrificing, or even just surprising—and this happens every day—I absorb their example. 

One of our graduating seniors was (and in some ways still is) a shy person: just like me, especially when I was in college.  But from her freshman year, whenever her work in SGA could be advanced by speaking in public—to rooms full of older peers or powerful adults, or to an entire class of new students at Convocation—she faced her fears and met the challenge.  Another graduating senior struggled with his choice of a major.  Even as he sifted through options and ultimately found his path, he was building an organization to help younger students find inspiration and fulfillment in their education.  How could I fail to become a little braver, a little more willing to take risks to support good causes, with people like these showing me the way?  And what more valuable lessons could there be than the ones that actually make me a stronger, more capable person?

The other context in which I learn a lot from students is when they share ideas and life experiences different from my own.  Their diverse stories are new windows on the world, helping me gain much-needed perspective on what’s happening at UMBC and beyond.  For example, after eight years at UMBC I feel quite comfortable and welcome.  But students help me see this familiar place through a different lens, and to recognize and address features that can make it difficult for newcomers to feel at home in our community.

So thanks to the many UMBC students who have been my teachers, especially the ones about to graduate.  I'm grateful for your lessons, and will carry them with me long after you've walked across that 1st Mariner Arena stage.

Last month, I had the opportunity to go on a Safety Walk around campus at night with Paul Dillon (Deputy Chief of UMBC Police), Ben Goldberg (Acting Director of Off-Campus and Transfer Student Services), and Joseph Regier (Director of The Commons). We walked around campus checking for potential safety hazards such as broken lights, blue lights, hiding spots for burglars, and necessary sidewalks and speed limits.

Problems noticed during the Walk:
Assistant Vice President of Facilities Management, Rusty Postlewate, has also been extremely helpful in trying to remedy these potential safety concerns.

In the next post, I will go more in detail about some of these safety hazards; specifically, regarding Park Road and a new program that the UMBC Police Department will be proposing similar to Emergency Blue Light Phones. The SGA officers elected last month to serve for 2011-2012 were sworn into office today on the Commons Terrace.  Here is the oath they took:

As part of our fantastic Comic Books Collection, we have more than 200 back issues of the original Thor comic books dating from 1965 through 1990! The first issue in our collection, number 119, even includes a battle against one of Thor's movie foes, The Destroyer!

And before you ask, yes, we've got classic 60's and 70's issues of Captain America, the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man as well!


Special Collections will be open from 1 until 4 pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday all the way through Finals Week, and until 8pm on Thursdays.
