A: I love that I am able to be a friendly face that people recognize and that I am able to interact with so many different people on a daily basis! Everyone knows me from work at the desk so its great to get so many friendly smiles and hellos while walking around campus. Now people are starting to know me from SEB too so I get questions about events while I'm at the desk! My jobs make it so easy to get to know such a diverse group of people on campus and I love it!

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: You have to take advantage of every opportunity you are offered here. Always put yourself out there and never underestimate what you are capable of doing! Sometimes, on my most overwhelming days of the week, I think maybe I have committed myself to too many things, however I love everything I do. On campus there are so many opportunities to find your niche and I feel like I've found quite a few for myself: desk staff, SEB, research, and most recently Phi Sigma Sigma :)

A: I never used to study at the library, but recently I have discovered that the first floor of the library is hoppin!!! Seriously, sometimes its a recipe for unproductiveness, BUT there is always someone to say hi to! So eventually when you realize you actually need to crack open the backpack you know there is always someone to take a study break and talk to and theres almost always someone to study with! Its the best!

UMBC sophomore Collin Wojciechowski (Real People Profile here) is going to be taking on some huge responsibilities in the coming year. In a state university system with 13 institutions, 168,000 students and an operating budget of over $4 billion, he's going to be the one student with a voice and a vote on the official governing board. Collin has been appointed by Governor O’Malley to be the University System of Maryland's Student Regent for 2011-2012.

The Regents have tremendous power to support and improve higher education in this state. Their decisions on matters including tuition and fees, the hiring of university presidents and the creation of new schools and programs will affect students for generations. Having the Student Regent position filled by a UMBC student creates opportunities for all other UMBC students to share their concerns and priorities with somebody with a voice and a vote where it counts.

Collin will be the third UMBC student to serve in the role. Phil Shockley (2003-2004) and Josh Michael (2008-2009) also served while they were UMBC undergraduates.

Collin is an approachable, self-deprecating person who has devoted himself to studying, writing about and helping to shape state policy. In high school he served as the student member of his county Board of Education. At UMBC he's a Sondheim Scholar, SGA's Director of Government and Community Affairs, and Opinion Editor of The Retriever Weekly. Last fall he was a student in the course on social change I teach with Delana Gregg (that's POLI 205/AMST 205/SOCY 205, for those of you about to start registering for fall 2011 courses). He's going to be a great ambassador and resource for UMBC. Congratulations, Collin!

Single Sign-on for Library Resources - coming Tuesday, April 5

Beginning Tuesday, April 5, UMBC is instituting single sign-on for Library resources. This means that once you have logged into myUMBC you will be able to access your catalog account, Research Port, and our other electronic resources without an additional log in. All Library resources will be accessed using your myUMBC username and password instead of your 14-digit Library ID.

Will this change the way I renew books or check my catalog account?

You will still renew books through your catalog account, but the log in process will be different. After clicking on the "My Library Account" link you will still be asked to select your campus. After selecting UMBC, you will be taken to a standard UMBC log-in screen where you will log in with your myUMBC username and password. This last step will be bypassed if you are already logged into myUMBC and you will be taken directly to your catalog account.

Special borrowers and alumni card holders are currently unable to access their library accounts. We are working on this problem and hope to have it resolved soon. In the meanwhile, please contact the Circulation Desk at 410-455-2354 or e-mail circlib@lists.umbc.edu if you need to check due dates or renew items.

Will this change the way I access Library resources (article databases, e-journals, etc.) from off-campus?

There will be no change if you use the UMBC VPN for off-campus access.

If you access Library resources directly from the Library's website, or if you use Research Port for off-campus access, the log in process will be different. As noted above you will still need to select UMBC as your campus, but from there you will be taken to a standard UMBC log-in screen where you will log in with your myUMBC username and password. If you are already logged into myUMBC you will be taken directly to your selected resource once you select UMBC as your campus.

Some patrons have reported receiving a message stating that their account has expired when trying to access Research Port through single sign-on. If you receive this error message please send the following information to Janet Hack:

Your name

Your campus ID

Your Library ID (from your myUMBC Profile)

The 14-digit number above the barcode on your UMBC ID card

Please indicate if you have ever used a different 14-digit number to access Research Port

If you are not able to access Research Port through single sign-on, please try using the UMBC VPN for access. See our page at http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/services/remoteaccess.php for more information on using the VPN.

Will this change the way I use Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad)

ILLiad is not part of the switch to single sign-on. You will still need to use your self-selected ILLiad username and password for all ILL requests.

Thank you for your assistance as we work our way through the unanticipated problems encountered during the switch to single sign-on. We hope that this change will ultimately make it easier to access Library resources. Please send any comments or concerns to Janet Hack, or contact the Reference Desk at 410-455-2346

Speaking the truth about domestic violence is a step toward healing for all survivors. But when talking about violence brings shame, ambivalence, and fear, art therapy
gives survivors not only a voice, but also is a way to raise
consciousness about the profound effects of battering and all forms of
    abuse between partners.

While I have no explanation for the
psychology behind the current financial crisis, as a therapist I am
certain of one psychological effect of an economic turndown -- an
increase in domestic violence. In this time of economic uncertainty, job
loss, home foreclosures, and increased costs of living, pressures mount
in families and frayed tempers inevitably will give way to an increase
in battering and abuse. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline,
domestic violence is a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is
used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner.
Physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or
threats of actions that influence another person may all be part of the
dynamics, including any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize,
manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound another individual.

While domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, or gender,
for the past 25 years I have worked with adult women and child
survivors and mostly those who have found refuge in shelters and safe
    houses. I suspect
that with the continuing economic rollercoaster, we will see a rise in
not only reports of domestic violence, but also a strain on these
community-based programs that help women and children leave abusive
    relationships.

Although personal safety and a violence-free life
are the first and foremost issues for anyone who is the victim of
domestic violence, the long term healing process involves recovery from
cumulative trauma, often posttraumatic stress reactions, and almost always personal shame and loss of self. Art therapy,
which formally began as a field and treatment shortly after World War
II, continues to be widely adopted to help battered women and children
deal with their physical and emotional scars. Art as a healing force
does not come easy for those whose lives have been controlled, are
accustomed to betrayal and punishment, and have learned self-hatred. But inevitably when it does, creativity and imagination restore a sense of possibility, identity,
and reconnection with parts of the self that were silenced in order to
survive the violence. While survivors often feel shame in talking about
abuse, talking about their artworks is an experience of finally coming
    home.

The tradition of art as a voice for domestic violence survivors has spawned a number of well-known programs, including the Clothesline Project,
a project to address violence against women. In 1990, visual artist
Rachel Carey-Harper, inspired by the AIDS quilt, presented the concept
of using shirts hanging on a clothesline as a way to raise
consciousness. Since doing the laundry was always considered women's
work and women often exchanged information
over backyard fences while hanging their clothes out to dry, the
concept of the clothesline became the vehicle. Each year thousands of
women now tell their stories of survival—and commemorate victims who
died from domestic violence—by using words and/or artwork to decorate a
t-shirt to be exhibited on a clothesline. And programs such as A Window Between Worlds in Venice, CA, serve as models for how art helps both women and children develop a sense of hope, possibility, and safety.

In her seminal volume, Trauma and Recovery,
Judith Herman echoes the very reason that violence must be transformed
in some way in order for recovery to begin: “Certain violations are too
terrible to utter out loud: this is the meaning of the word unspeakable
…Atrocities, however, refuse to be buried.” Domestic violence is one of
those atrocities that continues to plague lives and for its survivors,
is often too horrific to verbalize. Unfortunately, it may increase and
intensify in these weeks and months if the expected financial crises
continue. And while art is not the panacea for abuse, it is certainly a
way through it and one that not only transforms the atrocities of
violence, but also sends a powerful message that ultimately breaks the
    silence.

If you need help, please contact National Domestic Violence Hotline at http://www.ndvh.org/ or phone 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
