Run for SGA President, VP, Treasurer for 2011-2012
The Executive Branch, by far SGA’s largest, is where complex, ongoing programs and initiatives are implemented. Over 100 students serve as staff members in departments focused on academic affairs, health and wellness, environmental affairs, student organization supports, university facilities and operations, and other aspects of students’ experiences. Most students serving in the Executive Branch focus on one or two projects throughout the year with training and guidance from a more senior SGA member.
Only the top leadership positions in the Executive Branch are elected by the student body. Everybody else is appointed after the election by one of the leaders (or by one of their appointed department heads). The four elected positions are:
President
The SGA President takes the lead in setting SGA’s agenda, tone and strategy for the year; represents the entire undergraduate student body on formal occasions like Convocation and Commencement and in behind-the-scenes meetings about campus policies and plans; and manages a staff several layers deep, with over 100 members. The role of President is extraordinarily challenging, partly because you’re called upon to be so many things at once: a diplomat, a public speaker, a masterful organizer of people and information, a motivator and a mentor, all on top of your ongoing responsibilities as a student, a friend, etc. But the experience can be deeply rewarding and teach lessons for a lifetime.
Executive Vice President
Candidates for President and Executive Vice President run as teams. The Executive Vice President serves as the President’s partner and aide, with specific responsibilities depending on SGA’s needs and the individual leaders’ skills and interests. Executive Vice Presidents often play a large role in managing SGA’s internal operations while the President focuses on representing SGA and the student body to non-students. If you’re the Executive Vice President, you’ll play an integral part in shaping SGA’s culture and initiatives.
Vice President for Student Organizations
The VPSO guides the department of Student Organization Supports in providing information and help to UMBC’s 250+ student organizations. The VPSO also serves as a member of the SGA Finance Board and of the UMBC Student Organizations Committee, a student-staff group that manages the student organization recognition and registration processes. If you’re the VPSO, you’ll spend a lot of time each week in meetings, brainstorming and making plans and decisions with SGA colleagues, other students and staff.
Treasurer
The Treasurer is SGA’s chief financial officer, managing and tracking more than $750,000 in Student Activity Fee funds. This requires both diligent record-keeping and skill in communicating with the many people and organizations relying on the funds. The Treasurer provides training to all student organization Treasurers, serves as the first point of contact for student organizations’ funding requests, and serves as a member of the SGA Finance Board. If you are the SGA Treasurer, you’ll have your fingers on the pulse of campus life.
My favorite things about the Executive Branch leadership positions: These positions are responsible for managing a surprisingly complex enterprise, one that touches thousands of students and involves a budget in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The positions’ extraordinary demands and challenges are matched by unparalleled opportunities to make a difference at UMBC and develop new skills. There is no better vantage from which to learn how UMBC works and become a part of campus history.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Coordinator, Event Planning & Conference Services
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: The coordination of all non-academic events held on campus. This includes student orgs, departments and external clients
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: The people. This place is like being part of a large extended family and I'm happy to be a part of it.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: That life is short and you need to enjoy every moment.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: When I started at UMBC, there were approximately 80 student organizations and now there are over 150. It is a sign that student life at UMBC is expanding and everyone wants to get involved.
The Senate is SGA’s engine for collecting ideas from students and turning them into campus change initiatives. Members meet weekly to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus administrators and take positions on issues. But most of the Senate’s work takes place between the weekly meetings. Members spend time talking with students, representing all undergraduates on university committees, meeting in project working groups and doing the follow-up needed to get initiatives off the ground. This year’s Senate has been working with campus officials on the development of a new 24/7 study space in the Albin O. Kuhn Library; a program to help students at risk of leaving UMBC due to financial needs; and new resources to support students who have not declared majors. The Senate also is exploring ways to extend campus services on weekends and boost campus spirit (you may remember a certain flash mob before fall final exams). It can be both challenging and exhilarating to serve as a Senator because, by necessity, you learn so much about UMBC’s structure and decision-making processes as well as many specific issues.
My favorite things about the Senate: Senators are in the thick of the action. They are constantly imagining and planning UMBC’s future alongside fellow students and campus leaders. They have the flexibility to tackle initiatives that really motivate them and have the potential to make a difference for students.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: New Student Liaison, INDSCOM
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Helping others be who they are, enjoy life, and be happy
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: Being able to have a chat with anyone about anything, literally. By developing relationships with faculty, staff, and students, I am able to take advantage of the many incredible resources that exist at UMBC.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: How to integrate one department with another to create unique perspectives and solutions to problems.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: Sarcasm, Straight Up Tribal, peacebuilding, the UMBC Symphony Orchestra, outdoorsy goodness, the INDS Department, and stepping out of your comfort zone.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: A wise man once said: "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
The Finance Board is the branch of SGA that provides funds to support student organization activities: nearly $200,000 this year. Most of the Finance Board’s work is done at weekly meetings, where student organization leaders present requests and Finance Board members ask questions and make decisions. These meetings, which take place Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., can be both long and intense. Finance Board members have to wrestle with complex issues: applying university policies, striking a balance between supporting amazing events and stretching funds across the entire year, thinking about the precedent-setting impact of their decisions. But they have a lot of fun too, partly because it’s so interactive and engaging.
My favorite things about the Finance Board: A lot of campus life passes through the Finance Board. Members get to brainstorm with student organization leaders and then see the resulting programs and activities, so they have a strong sense of their impact. Discussions are not just about money but about vision, philosophy and priorities.

Name: Rehana Shafi
Hometown: Born in Albuquerque, NM - lived there until I was 14 - then moved to Sharon, MA - lived there until I was 25 - then moved to MD!
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: 9 1/2 years -- 11 if you count my time as a Choice Program caseworker, which I certainly think counts for something :-)
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Assistant Director of the Sherman Teacher Education Scholars Program. I also serve as co-advisor to Golden Key Honor Society, and I am Past President of the Professional Staff Senate
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I support STEM majors who will go on to become Maryland's best classroom teachers!
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I most enjoy "Sherman Family Meetings," when I have all of my scholars in a room together, talking about life in general, classes, how things are going in the classrooms in which they are working, etc. I love "my kids", as I call them.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Do I have to pick one thing? The most important lesson I have learned is humanity - treat all others with dignity and empathy - and treat yourself with respect and compassion. Also, you should always conduct yourself as if others are around. The strength of your character lies in what you do when you think no one is watching. Oh, and one more - it is true that your mind is a most powerful force. What you put into living, whether positive, negative, or apathetic, affects the outcomes you will receive.

A: The light that twinkles in the eyes of happy children. Try to imagine how the world looks from those eyes - wondrously beautiful and full of potential!
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I have a couple of favorite spots on campus ... in the winter, I love the sun-soaked Women's Center, and in the summer, I enjoy sitting outdoors to eat lunch, whether behind the Commons or at the picnic tables between the ACIV buildings.

SGA Officer Application for 2011-2012
UMBC's SGA is a forum for making a difference on campus and beyond. Participants receive training and support as they tackle campus issues, create programs and work together for the benefit of all UMBC undergraduates.
20 students serve in SGA’s elected leadership positions: President, Executive VP, VP for Student Organizations, Treasurer, Senator (11) and Finance Board Member (5). These positions will be filled in the annual election in April. Learn more about these positions and apply to run for them here. No previous SGA experience is necessary. All elected officers receive stipends in recognition of their service.
Over the next few days, I’ll be posting descriptions of what it’s like to serve in each of these positions. As the people serving now can tell you, it’s a life-changing opportunity not to be missed.

I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Hamza Siddiqui
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: I'm a second semester…freshman!
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I'm currently a First Year Ambassador for SGA Senate and a member of the First Year Council.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I work to empower and engage, educate and be educated. And stretchlimitationsasmuchasIcan.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I enjoy the fact that I get the opportunity to interact with so many interesting people; people who are mentors and peers, friends and colleagues. The insights and commentaries I've had a chance to share have been deep and absurd, each enjoyable. And a gratifying part of my role is seeing the tangible impact it has, in the lives of people, be it on campus or community.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I've learned not to take myself too seriously and that, contrary to what I believe, I don't know everything. And, every now and then, a little ridiculousness and spontaneity is necessary.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: So many things: Disney movies, The Daily Show, blueberries, chick fil-A milkshakes, David Hoffman, Fifa, adjectives.
But I'm a bigger fan of Calvin and Hobbes. It's simply the best.Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I've been here for a little over half a year, and already I've had experiences, friendships and memories that are too numerous to count; I can only hope my brain is prepared for the remaining years at UMBC.
I believe that the UMBC experience is truly what you make it. Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and explore a little. And if you want to do something do it; if you want to stand for something, stand for it; if you want to be yourself, by all means, be yourself.
