Real People Profiles: Curtis Schickner
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Hometown: East Windsor, New Jersey
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: I am a junior (2+ years).
Q:What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A:Assistant Director of Finance and Operations in Student Government and Secretary of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I play baseball and am involved in many departments at UMBC
.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: My favorite role at UMBC is being a student-athlete. I enjoy competing against other schools and representing UMBC. I really enjoy working with student government and their finance and operations department. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has given me many opportunities to work with students from other colleges and universities. I get the most satisfaction out of mentoring an elementary school child from Baltimore City.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: The most important things that I’ve learned in college are to not regret your decisions, don’t let fear of embarrassment or failure stop you from achieving something, and lend a hand to someone in need of help or guidance.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: UMBC Athletics.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: One of my favorite moments at UMBC happened during my freshman year. My friends and I woke up early the day of a huge snowstorm on campus. We went sledding on every hill on campus before the rest of campus woke up. It’s spontaneous moments and activities that make the best college memories.

EBL Ebook Library
EBL offers content across all subject areas, with an initial focus on recent titles - most specifically in the areas of Science, Technology and Medicine (STM). EBL features more than 100,000 titles from hundreds of academic publishers.
You must create a free account from a valid UMBC IP address in order to access the EBL trial.
Trial runs through December 15, 2010.
Springer eBooks
The Springer eBooks trial provides access to over 20,000 eBook titles (2005-2010 copyright only) in twelve subject collections:

NetLibrary
NetLibrary provides online access to thousands of scholarly books and reference works. Subjects include: computer science, business, international relations, education, environmental science, psychology, civil rights law and history.
UMBC currently has access to a selection of books specifically chosen by Maryland Academic Libraries. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL).

Real People Profiles: Susan DuMont
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Susan DuMont
Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: One month!
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A:Coordinator of Student Life for Fraternities & Sororities.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Advise and support a healthy, visible, vibrant Greek community.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I'm in the honeymoon stage and I'm enjoying everything about my role and UMBC so far! One thing I really like is that my role includes working in The Commons. I'm really extroverted and thrive in the high energy environment of The Commons. I've mastered a five minute walking loop around the building that I walk when I need an energy boost during the day. If you see me power walking through the building one afternoon now you know why! I also really like getting into my office early in the morning and feeling the building and campus sort of 'wake up' through the morning and early afternoon. And of course I really enjoy the students and staff I've worked with so far and how receptive to new ideas people have been.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I learned that I love greek life, I'm good at helping people make it be what it's supposed to be about, and that I could do that professionally. That's pretty cool! The second most Chemistry and very clearly remember the day that I learned the chemical reaction that happens in your eyes when you cut onions that makes you cry. Fun fact, I decided I was going to be a greek advisor on my way to organic chem lab.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: Doing things. I really like to DO. I have a lot of hobbies and I'm almost always up for trying something new. I like being active, outside, and taking risks. I'm also a really big fan of Linsey Corbin. She's the best female pro-triathlete in the US and she's greek!
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: This isn't 'little-known' but the circle around campus is SUCH a great run! My favorite way to do it (so far) is to start where Commons Drive meets the circle and run towards Poplar Ave. The grade up that side of the hill is perfect and feels like SUCH an accomplishment when I reach the top. Then I get to fly down the other side! I love that there is grass next to the sidewalk for almost the entire run so I can protect my body and run in the grass. Repeat as desired, and if the weather and timing are right, I go to the pool for a few laps as a cool down swim. It might be the most perfect workout!
