Full Title: Chicken Game: Legislature Threatens U. Md. Law School Funding
Like many law schools, the University of Maryland School of Law operates legal clinics that allow students to get experience tackling real cases. The school's environmental law clinic recently helped file a lawsuit against poultry producers to enforce the Clean Water Act and stop pollution of rivers flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. Now the poultry producers are fighting back, and members of the Maryland legislature have taken their side by pressuring the law school to name all of the clinics' clients or face funding cuts. Here's a Washington Post piece on the subject, and here is the Baltimore Sun's editorial opposing the threatened cuts.
As with similar threats made in the past, the legislators' intervention seems to me to miss a crucial point about how people actually learn. Education is not just academic; experiences teach too. If legislators try to impose such tight control on universities that nothing they disagree with ever occurs on campus, they take away opportunities for students to learn from making and living with their own choices, and from engaging diverse perspectives and interests. A college education should be more than a series of exercises conducted within the straight and narrow lines drawn by state lawmakers.

The Capsule Cometh
For nearly thirty years they sat untouched in the attic of my parents' house in California: a collection of sealed cardboard boxes held together with masking tape. Hidden inside were the materials a 12-year old boy had decided to send forward through time.
This was the second of my time capsules, sealed on July 12, 1980. I remember nothing about the contents other than that in the months after I sealed my first capsule (on March 5, 1980, to be opened on March 5, 2000), I had given more thought to what a person from the distant future might find interesting. And I had decided to be more ambitious and patient than I had been with the first capsule: instead of a 20-year wait, I left instructions (taped to the cover of one of the boxes) that this capsule should be opened 30 years hence, on July 12, 2010. I know I hoped that I would be the one to open the capsule, but it was a real challenge to imagine that I might one day be so old, or that the capsule would not be lost at some point on its temporal journey.
A few weeks ago I asked my parents to send me the capsule. My mother put the whole thing in one big box, and took it to a FedEx office today. 26 pounds of my distant past are on their way to Baltimore, in plenty of time for the July unveiling.
So what do I hope to find? I can think of some things that I might have gotten my hands on as a 12-year old that would have appreciated significantly in value over 30 years. But (unrealistic as it is to expect) I think I'd like nothing more than to find 26 pounds of handwritten pages--messages from family and friends, and my own impressions of my life and speculation about the years ahead.

Register to Vote in the 2010 Election
This fall Maryland voters will have the chance to elect a Governor, members of Congress, state legislators and county officials, and to vote on ballot initiatives. The deadline to register for the primary election is before school starts in the fall. Please take a few minutes to register now so you won't be left out.
Maryland Voter Registration Application Form (last day to register in Maryland before the primary election is August 24, 2010).
Maryland Absentee Ballot Request Form (must be received by the State Board of Elections by September 7, 2010 if you want to vote by absentee ballot in the primary election).
National Voter Registration Form (if your state of residence is not Maryland, use this form; all states other than North Dakota, Wyoming and New Hampshire accept it).

The Commons by Any Other Name . . .
Seven months ago, UMBC was named as the #1 up-and-coming national university by U.S. News & World Report. Now one UMBC committee wants to ensure that our reputation for quality and flair for innovation are evident to the users of campus facilities. To that end, the University Council on Grounds and Structures has announced that in August 2011, The Commons will be given a new name that better reflects the distinctiveness of UMBC's faculty, staff and student body: The Uncommons.

Woo Hoo! QMANIA 2010 IS ALMOST HERE!
Quadmania 2010 is only weeks away! I hope you're excited, because we sure are. We just got our Quadmania splash page up on the website, which has our first set of announcements! (Click the picture above to check it out.) We have a ton of cool things in store for the weekend of April 16-18, two awesome headlining acts, and a diverse lineup of live music for the outdoor stage. And you read that right... Quadmania's Outdoor Live Music Stage is going to be on the Quad!!
We heard your feedback and are happy to announce that Quadmania is returning to its roots this year as it should. The carnival and other fun things (and we mean it; think elephants and roller rinks) will still be on Lot 17, but don't think that it's going to be like it has in the past. We're putting a lot of effort into amping up the event and really restoring its community atmosphere because hey, that's what it's supposed to be about.
So stay tuned for more Quadmania 2010 updates, giveaways, and announcements.
The first round of Quadmania-themed giveaways will be at the Quadmania Pep Rally, which is set to take place Wednesday, April 7th from 11AM-1PM on the Commons Terrace.
