Career Center Fall 2023 Semester Welcome
We Look Forward to Working with You!
Our Career Center team is excited to work with all UMBC Retrievers! We’re ready to help with resumes, internships/jobs, decision making and ANYTHING career.
We are holding both in-person & virtual appointments for your comfort and convenience.
Appointments available M-F from 9am-5pm and select evenings. Appointments may be scheduled online (via
Handshake), by phone (410-455-2216) or by stopping by the Career Center (Math/Psych 201).
You can also simply stop by for a Drop-in Monday through Thursday from 2pm-4pm. These 15-minute in-person sessions are held at the Career Center (Math/Psych 201), for resumé and cover letter critiques, Handshake questions, or an overview of our services. No appointment needed. Simply stop by the Career Center.
The Career Center is also offering many career and industry events this fall to support you in your career search. Get started today! Hope to see you soon!

Faculty and staff meal plans are available
Dear Colleagues,
Dining Services has new options for faculty and staff meal plans this year. If you sign up by August 18, the 70 or 100 meal block plans are eligible for payroll deduction. Purchased meals never expire -- and can be used at any dining location on campus except the Skylight Room. Enjoy a delicious all-you-care-to-eat meal at True Grit's or a meal from one of our exciting retail dining concepts in The Commons, including two new locations opening this fall semester: Copperhead Jacks, serving Southwestern-inspired burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and bowls, and Sorrento's, serving authentic deli subs, chicken wings, and more!
The attached flyer provides information on the meal plans as well as dining locations and hours of operation. Hope to see you all eating on campus this semester!

I am writing a policy analysis for the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) on a mental health policy in Maryland with a health equity focus on one of the 5 Social Determinants of Health.
Day to day responsibilities look like attending meetings related to health policy grants, researching mental health policies in Maryland, and writing the different components of the policy analysis which will be my end product. I love researching mental health policy because it's very personal. Having the opportunity to identify gaps in the literature for my specific problem will be the basis for this policy analysis and potentially my dissertation topic!
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I attended Alternative Spring Break (ASB 2023) where I met the health equity director for Baltimore City that was on one of the panels we attended. I emailed him my interests and he offered to have me as an intern.
What resources did you use to find your current experience?
Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.).
What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I have enjoyed the freedom to explore policy analysis metrics (political feasibility, timeliness, cost, and effectiveness) through a health equity lens within Maryland and Baltimore City.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe I have made an impact by identifying gaps in mental health policy that need to be filled.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
I would say reach out if you are interested and be optimistic. Also, I would say network as much as possible.

Retriever Integrated Health will be closed August 16

Dear Campus Community,
Retriever Integrated Health (RIH) is taking part in a scheduled departmental retreat and will be closed on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. The office will reopen on Thursday, August 17, 2023.
Students having a mental health crisis can call 988, and those with health or mental health concerns and in need of consultation can call the RIH helpline at 410-455-2230.
In case of an emergency on August 16, 2023, please contact UMBC Police at 410-455-5555.

New Interface for DUO Multi-factor Authentication
Tuesday August 15th the DUO login interface will be changing
Over the past six months, we have successfully enrolled our students into Duo, giving them the same added protection of multi-factor authentication as faculty and staff. I can't thank everyone enough for how smooth a transition this has been. The support from faculty and staff and students helping with communications, outreach, and providing feedback made it possible for us to do this successfully in a short time period.
On August 15th we are upgrading our Duo login page to their new interface. Duo is calling this new interface their Universal Prompt and it looks like this:
This simplified new Duo experience will help you log in to your applications faster than before. Everything will work the same as with the previous prompt, but with a different look and feel.
One change is that instead of being asked to remember your device for 30 days, after successfully logging in you will now be asked if you are logging in from your own device.
This feature will help cut down the number of times you need to use Duo, but this should only be done on devices that you own and have full control over, never on a public device or one that is being shared.
