UMBC is proud to announce the first Disability Studies course, which is being offered by Academic Engagement & Transition Programs under Undergraduate Academic Affairs GEP.  This course will satisfy a Culture or Social Sciences GEP requirement.

FYS 106 - Introduction to Disability Studies will be offered in Fall 2023 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-2:15 PM. 

Topics will include:
  • An introduction to Disability Studies as an academic discipline 
  • Social constructs of disability 
  • History of disability in North America. Historical review will include indigenous peoples, colonialism, and eugenics up to the passage of the ADA
  • Arts and literature in disability 
  • Ableism and language use regarding disability 
  • Disability as diversity/culture and identity 
  • Disability rights and legislation

We are excited to share that Residential Life will launch a new housing portal on July 15, 2023! The new, user-friendly portal allows students to apply for housing and retrieve information related to their housing status. 

While we transition to the new portal, our current housing portal will be offline from June 23, 2023 until July 15, 2023. Thus, students will not be able to apply for Summer or Fall housing and those on the waitlist will not receive housing offers during this period.  

We’re notifying all potential users in advance to encourage planning around this interruption in service. We strongly encourage you to do the following:

  • Submit your housing waitlist application if you have not already applied for housing for the upcoming year, and want to be considered for on-campus housing

  • Those who are eligible and interested in Summer Session II housing should apply before June 23, 2023 at 5 p.m. 

  • Visit reslife.umbc.edu for housing information and updates.

  • Students with existing housing applications should monitor their UMBC email for information from Residential Life.

June marks National LGBTQ+ Pride Month and offers the nation the opportunity to reflect on the incredible contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Our nation is at its best when it welcomes, represents and includes people of all backgrounds. This includes people with disabilities and the intersections shared with the LGBTQ+ community. According to a study published in 2012, fully 36 percent of women in the LGBTQ+ community and 30 percent of men in the community also self-identify as people with disabilities. As you are likely aware, smoke from wildfires in eastern Canada is continuing to spread and causing poor air quality across much of the eastern U.S., including on UMBC's campus and in surrounding areas.

Extended exposure to such poor air quality can be unhealthy for everyone and more problematic for those with breathing difficulties. For these reasons we advise minimizing or canceling outdoor activities. Supervisors should consider allowing staff to work remotely if breathing difficulties are a concern.

UMBC's Environmental Safety and Health as well as Facilities staff are monitoring conditions within buildings on campus, as well as reducing the amount of outside air that is being brought into our facilities.

Room Assignments & Roommate Information
Beginning July 15, 2023 all students licensed (contracted) to live on-campus for the 2023-2024 academic year will be able to view their roommate information on the Housing Portal (umbc.edu/go/housing).

If you've not yet applied for housing, it is not too late.  Please visit https://reslife.umbc.edu/apply/housing-waitlist-process/ to learn more about the waitlist process.

Fall Move-In
New UMBC students will move-in on Saturday, August 26, 2023.  Returning UMBC students will move-in on Monday, August 28, 2023.  Students will receive their specific move-in time in early August.  For more information about Move-In please visit https://reslife.umbc.edu/important-dates/move-in/

Cancellations
We understand that students may decide to not to return to UMBC or housing after completing a housing license for a number of reasons.  If you are no longer planning to attend UMBC or live on campus, you must submit an RT Ticket with Residential Life requesting to cancel your housing.

A cancellation fee will be applied based on the timing of your request.  Please see the cancellation fee schedule below:
  • Prior to June 1, 2023- $200 Cancellation Fee
  • June 1, 2023-June 30, 2023- $400 Cancellation Fee
  • July 1, 2023- July 31, 2023- $500 Cancellation Fee
  • August 1, 2023- August 27, 2023- $600 Cancellation Fee
  • Occupancy or August 28, 2023- $700 Cancellation Fee.

The Essential Space, in RAC 235, is back open to the UMBC community this Monday at 11am! Meet Michael or Harshal who will be ready to greet you between the hours of 11am and 5pm, every Monday through Thursday throughout the summer.

3) The Yumm Shoppe located in the lower level of the Bookstore is open anytime the Bookstore is open. Monday - Friday: 8am to 4pm. 

Keep in mind: The Bookstore will be closed Juneteenth - June 19th and for Inventory - June 29th & June 30th

The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued a Code Red air quality alert in the Baltimore region of Maryland.

This means the air quality is unhealthy for the general population. Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Members of sensitive groups, including those with asthma and other lung diseases, may experience more serious health effects.

Staying indoors as much as you can & wearing a mask while outdoors can help protect you from the impacts of pollution from the wildfires in Canada.
