    <div class="html-content"><div>UMBC is proud to announce the first Disability Studies course, which is being offered by <span>Academic Engagement &amp; Transition Programs under</span><span> Undergraduate Academic Affairs</span> GEP.  This course will satisfy a Culture or Social Sciences GEP requirement.</div><div><br></div><div>FYS 106 - Introduction to Disability Studies will be offered in Fall 2023 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-2:15 PM. </div><div><br></div><div>Topics will include:</div><div><ul><li>An introduction to Disability Studies as an academic discipline </li><li>Social constructs of disability </li><li>History of disability in North America. Historical review will include indigenous peoples, colonialism, and eugenics up to the passage of the ADA</li><li>Arts and literature in disability </li><li>Ableism and language use regarding disability </li><li>Disability as diversity/culture and identity </li><li>Disability rights and legislation </li></ul><span><span>Please consider enrolling in this course or helping to spread the word.  Progress starts with the first step; knowledge creates access. </span></span></div></div>

  <Title>Interruption of Service to Housing Portal</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>We are excited to share that Residential Life will launch a new housing portal on July 15, 2023! The new, user-friendly portal allows students to apply for housing and retrieve information related to their housing status. </span></p><p><span><strong>While we transition to the new portal, our current housing portal will be offline from June 23, 2023 until July 15, 2023.</strong> Thus, students will not be able to apply for Summer or Fall housing and those on the waitlist will not receive housing offers during this period.  </span></p><p><span>We’re notifying all potential users in advance to encourage planning around this interruption in service.   <Title>Celebrating National LGBTQ+ Pride with Disability Awareness</Title>
  <Tagline>~5 million disabled people under the LGBTQ+ umbrella</Tagline>

        												<div><div><span>June marks National LGBTQ+ Pride Month 
    and offers the nation the opportunity to reflect on the incredible 
    contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Our nation is at its best when it
     welcomes, represents and includes people of all backgrounds. This 
    includes people with disabilities and the intersections shared with the 
    LGBTQ+ community. According to a </span><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3490559/#:~:text=Results.,than%20heterosexual%20adults%20with%20disabilities." rel="nofollow external" class="bo">study published in 2012</a><span>,
     fully 36 percent of women in the LGBTQ+ community and 30 percent of men

    <div class="html-content"><p>As you are likely aware, smoke from wildfires in eastern
    Canada is continuing to spread and causing poor air quality across much of the
    eastern U.S., including on UMBC's campus and in surrounding areas. <br>
    <br>
    Extended exposure to such poor air quality can be unhealthy for everyone and
    more problematic for those with breathing difficulties. For these reasons we
    advise minimizing or canceling outdoor activities. Supervisors should consider
    allowing staff to work remotely if breathing difficulties are a concern. <br>
    <br>
    UMBC's Environmental Safety and Health as well as Facilities staff are
    monitoring conditions within buildings on campus, as well as reducing the
    amount of outside air that is being brought into our facilities. <br>
    <br>

Some members of the general public may experience health effects.
