"Pretty sure I'm going to win that $100," said Kedzierski, a longtime UMBC employee, who submitted her selfie by mail this morning. Unfortunately, Kedzierski ended up taking a photo of the parking lot outside her office window. This is a salient example of how not to take a selfie.

"Oh," said Kedzierski, when she first set eyes on her selfie attempt. "Must be something wrong with my phone. Probably something in settings. Or maybe I didn't enable cookies. It's always a problem with cookies."

Ms. Kedzierski still has time, however, to submit a second attempt and she could still win one of several fabulous prizes. Here's how:

The ability to recognize rhythmic symbols, as well as add the numeric values that they symbolize, is essential for students to be able to play music and stay in time throughout their performance. This study assessed seventeen 4th and 5th grade band and strings students in a diverse suburban elementary school and their ability to identify various rhythms and their corresponding numerical values. These seventeen students all earned a score below a 59/68 in the pre-assessment, and were expected to have improved their score by 15 points or attain a minimum score of 60/68 on the post-assessment. To aid their progress before the post-assessment, a more hands-on strategy was used to guide students through the work of the pre-assessment, as well as providing elementary-appropriate analogies and visual aids to practice note identification. The mathematical element was included in the assessment itself, using rhythmic symbols in lieu of the numeric values that accompany them. Students were encouraged to label the values under the symbols and show their work to complete the equations. Upon completing the post-assessment, fifteen out of the seventeen students achieved the goal of improving their score by 15 points or reaching the target of 60/68.

Don't Delay - Create a Long-Term Academic Plan Today!

Fall 2023 registration is almost here! In the midst of the semester grind, it can be a challenge to think beyond just the next semester. But did you know that according to the UMBC Baccalaureate Degree Completion Policy, the university actually encourages all students to have a long-term academic plan established by the time they have earned 45 credits?

What exactly is a long-term academic plan? It’s a map of how you are going to complete ALL your degree requirements- not just those needed for your major. Ideally, you will create a plan that is broken down by semester (including any summer or winter sessions you may use) and include credit totals.

You may be thinking this sounds like a daunting process, but students who carve out time to do this exercise are able to reap several benefits:

See the Big Picture– long-term planning allows you to visualize the gaps. Open space that you have in your overall academic plan can be used intentionally for things like study abroad, an internship, or a second major or a minor/certificate

Ensures timely graduation – planning out your academics beyond just the next semester will help you avoid missing degree requirements, such as the 45 upper-level credit requirement. If you create a first draft of your plan and then realize you have “run out of space” to meet your graduation goal, you now have the time to figure out how to move things around, which may include taking more credits in a certain semester or adding in a summer or winter session*

Allows for greater flexibility and confidence – when you have an overall idea of when you plan to take certain courses, youactually can move things around with greater ease without the worry of accidentally bumping out another required course. Everything needed is right there in front of you and accounted for!Are you a student-athlete? By long-term planning, you can create a plan that allows you to have a lighter course load during your season and a heavier one in the off season. Are you planning to study abroad? You can reserve/hold off on certain courses that you know you can take during your study abroad semester. Do you need to go part-time for a semester? You can determine which future semesters will carry the load of classes you didn’t take in that part-time semester.

This is all about creating a plan that is unique to YOU and your needs, instead of feeling constrained by what’s required. When you don’t long-term plan, you run the risk of boxing yourself in to a course schedule that doesn’t really serve your goals and needs.

So how do you get started on long-term planning? It’s easy.

Find the Academic Pathway associated with your major (you can also download a blank planning document from this website), in conjunction with the Undergraduate Course Catalog (which also includes requirements for minors and certificates). Use these resources to help determine what classes are needed for your program(s) of study. Note – Academic Pathways are guides intended to show you the order in which to take certain major classes. Each student’s plan will be unique, especially if you entered UMBC with transfer or AP/IB credits.

While creating the plan, utilize your Degree Audit in myUMBC to confirm what degree requirements (including General Education and University requirements) you’ve already completed. You can print off your Degree Audit and “check off” the requirements as you put them into your plan.

Meet with your academic advisor to review the plan and ensure that you did not miss any important requirements.

Bonus - Enter your plan into the Degree Planner on myUMBC to update your Degree Donut.

*Want to get ahead, catch up, or lighten your load during the regular academic year? Consider summer session at UMBC! Course offerings are mostly online for 2023 and include 4, 6, 8 and 12-week options.

In closing, just because you create a long-term plan, doesn’t mean it can’t be changed. Ideally you will bring this plan with you, in whatever format you choose, to each advising appointment so you can make adjustments with your academic advisor as necessary. Happy Planning!

Acculturation theory states that immigrants usually maintain some beliefs and values from their homeland during their adaptation process in a new country. Based on this theory, it is plausible that immigrants will hold onto the attitudes toward women typical of their home countries when developing their attitudes toward women’s participation in politics in the United States. Previous literature finds that the country of origin influences immigrant attitudes toward women. Few studies have examined immigrant attitudes specifically toward women in politics across multiple immigrant groups. This study investigates how homeland views on gender roles might influence the perceptions immigrants have toward women in politics in the United States. The study used a survey applied to 163 immigrant adults from multiple countries in Maryland. After conducting difference of means tests, single variable linear regressions, and multivariate regressions, this study finds that immigrants from countries with more egalitarian attitudes toward women are more likely to hold positive attitudes toward women’s participation in politics in the United States compared to immigrants from countries with more patriarchal attitudes toward women. Furthermore, the study also found that gender, political orientation, and age were strong predictors of immigrant attitudes toward women in politics in the United States.

Every April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) calls
attention to the impact sexual violence has on our community and how we all
    play a part in prevention.

The national theme of SAAM 2023 is “Drawing Connections:
Prevention Demands Equity.” The campaign recognizes sexual violence as both a
public health and social justice issue. Systems
of oppression such as racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism,
and others contribute to higher rates of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse.

This year, we encourage you to examine and draw connections between various forms of oppression and
the underlying causes of sexual assault. In addition, explore how certain

people are also the most impacted by inequitable systems and oppression in our
    society.

This April don’t focus just on awareness but also action. We’re asking you to join us in building equity and respect

Tristan Diaz
Mentor: Bambi Chapin, Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health, UMBC

Each weekend, people across the country head out “into the great outdoors” to “get away from civilization.” As they do so, they engage with ideas about nature that have a long and varied history in the United States, many of which conflict with each other. Further, these ideas underlie ways that individuals, groups, and governments interact with the natural world, shaping the environment, sometimes in ways that cause irreparable harm. This study explores how ideas about nature and human activity are vocalized and employed by members of one large and active Maryland-based hiking club as they head out on trails winding across parks, preserves, and urban areas. Through ethnographic methods, including participant observation and several forms of interviewing, this project demonstrates how participation with this hiking club shapes members’ views of nature and their activities within it. This qualitative data was principally collected during organized hikes of varying size and difficulty level. This investigation of hikers’ ideas about nature and their place within it has implications for building stronger community engagement with the environment as well as policies and practices that conserve it.

Abstract:

Picture this: a corner shop. You walk in and hear the buzz of clippers from a barber or a salon, the smell of burning flat iron, then some faint neo-soul music and real talk amongst the stylists and clients. What is this place? Why does it matter? Why is it here? What better way to know than to hear from the ones who run it? The right to the city can be defined in numerous ways, but this research dives into its culturally independent side. Black-owned businesses aren't just for profit; they aim to create safe spaces and independence. The Watch Me Work project methodology is an interactive interview set up to hear the stories of Black Baltimore Salons and Barbershops from the owners. An article by the Huffington Post notes that "black salons are a social hub" and are "safe spaces" for people to be unapologetically black. This project focuses on how and why this space was created from the mouths of the creators. Video interviews with the owners are the most authentic way to capture the stories of these environments. In conclusion, the objective of this project is to explore the pursuit of Black Business in Baltimore.
