Leadership Team Announcements

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you all are all enjoying a well-deserved break and share my excitement in beginning this new semester. As we prepare for the spring semester, and the countless opportunities it will present for learning, discovery, and community, I want to share with you some news about changes in the UMBC leadership team. These changes reflect our collective commitment to ensuring that UMBC continues to be an exceptional university dedicated to excellence and equity.

General Counsel

Our longtime General Counsel, David Gleason, will retire at the end of the month. Dave has served our campus community as a constant and reassuring presence for almost 30 years. I am personally grateful for his support throughout my transition to UMBC, and for his many contributions to UMBC's success. I know Dave will stay connected to our community through the many friendships he has developed during his time at UMBC. As of February 1, Associate General Counsel Bobbie Hoye will serve as the point of contact for the Office of the General Counsel.

Vice President of Government Relations and Community Affairs

I am delighted to report that Candace Dodson-Reed has agreed to take on the new position of Vice President of Government Relations and Community Affairs, where she will continue the work of advancing our goals in the community and deepening partnerships with the State of Maryland and government leaders on a full-time basis. While Candace has filled many roles at UMBC, including Chief of Staff to the President, we agree that UMBC's relationships with community partners and policymakers in Annapolis and Washington, D.C. have never been more important, and now require the full-time attention of an experienced leader with a wide network. I look forward to benefiting from Candace's wise counsel on all matters of public policy and legislative affairs.

Chief of Staff

Kacey Hammel will be the new Chief of Staff to the President. Kacey is new to UMBC, but she is a deeply experienced academic leader and strategist who has worked closely with me at Duke University and the University of North Carolina. Kacey will serve as a strategic partner to me and my senior leadership team. She will be responsible for leading initiatives within my office.

Vice President of University Communications

Telling UMBC's story to the world is one of our highest priorities and we will shortly begin a national search for the newly created role of Vice President of University Communications, who will serve as UMBC's chief spokesperson and spearhead our communications and marketing initiatives. In the meantime, beginning on February 6, I am excited to report that Angela Schaeffer will serve as our interim Vice President of University Communications, leading our communications team and the important work they have been doing. Angela has extensive experience leading communications at Trinity College (CT), Williams College, and Johns Hopkins University, and I look forward to her leadership at UMBC.

Title IX Officer

Finally, we have engaged Jackie Moran of the consulting firm Grand River Solutions to provide interim leadership of our Title IX office during this period of transition while we conduct a nationwide search to identify UMBC's next Title IX Officer. Jackie and her firm have extensive experience advising colleges and universities on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues, as well as a long track record of managing Title IX operations and initiatives across a wide range of institutions.

I could not be more excited about these new additions to our team, nor more grateful for the service and dedication of our longtime leaders who have helped shape UMBC's success. Everyone who reads this message has contributed in some way to that success and I so look forward to working with you in the months and years ahead as we fulfill our vital educational mission.

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby

Intern of the Week: Ruthann Dolinka

  <Tagline>Check out Ruthann's Software Engineering Internship</Tagline>

Name: Ruthann Dolinka

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Collins Aerospace

Position Title: Embedded Software Engineer Intern

Major or Program: Computer Science /

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Summer 2022

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

During my internship I was responsible for setting up a Jenkins Server. I installed the Jenkins software on a desktop computer, connected the desktop to three NI-test stations, and then configured Jenkins to test project code.

Jenkins is software that performs continuous Integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD). This means that Jenkins is able to autonomously test code and send out a notification of the results of those tests. This is useful because it allows code to be tested much more quickly and can catch errors that may not be caught for a long time with manual tests. Projects being worked on by multiple people often benefit from the use of Jenkins, as it is easy for a change to one person’s code to conflict with another person’s code. Jenkins solves this problem by continuously integrating and testing code when a change is made so that errors can be caught early.

My daily responsibilities consisted of working on setting up the Jenkins server, talking with my team or other onsite employees to discuss solutions, and attending meetings. I would often work on researching a problem or writing scripts at my desk. I would also work in the lab on the desktop and test station hardware. I would have a meeting every other week with my team to discuss my project progress as well as listen to the status of my teams other projects.

By the end of my internship I had completed all the goals set for my project. The Jenkins software would clone the SVN repository for the project, copy to the code to the test station, execute the test, copy the test results to the Jenkins server, and then email out a notification with the status of the test as well as the test results and build log attached as artifacts.

I really enjoyed my experience during this internship and I learned a lot about both the professional development process and code development. I improved my python, batch, and scripting skills and got the chance to work on my networking skills and meet many new people. I hope to be able to secure a full time position with Collins Aerospace in the future.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

The process I went through to obtain this position was different then the majority of the internship positions I applied to. Most positions I applied to through a company website, usually hearing about the position through UMBCworks or LinkedIn.

I heard about this position when I attended the online 2021 SWE conference. The UMBC Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) organization made it possible for me to attend this conference. They sponsored me and several other CWIT students to attend the conference. I submitted my resume when registering for the conference, and I was later contacted by a Collins Aerospace recruiter who expressed interest in setting up an interview after the conference.

After the conference I got the chance to do two interviews with two different recruiters from Collins. After the interview they informed me that they would meet with other Collins recruiters to discuss the candidates they interviewed and try to determine which where the best fit for the positions they were trying to fill. Sometime after the interviews I was presented with an offer. I later did another interview with the manager I would be working under during my internship.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

Career Fairs, Student Organizations/Scholar Groups, SWE Conference, CWIT

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

What I enjoyed most about working for Collins has been the working environment, my team, the work, and the resources and events available to me. The working environment at Collins was very supportive and I felt welcome and that I had everything I needed to do my job. For example, towards the end of my internship I started to feel a lot of pain in my wrist from using the mouse. I visited the nurse on site and she did a physical assessment and supplied me with two ergonomic mice to try and an ice pack. I always felt that I could reach out to anyone on the site or in my team for assistance, whether it was the IT department, my manager, or the nurse.

My team was very supportive and we had biweekly meetings to check the progress of the projects we were working on. I was assigned a mentor and I felt I could reach out to her at any time.

The work was challenging but also enjoyable. I felt like I was learning and improving my skills while working on my project, but still had fun working on it. The project felt relevant to my major and like I was working on something meaningful that would be used after I left.

Collins had many resources and events available to me. I often attended workshops and met with other interns and full time staff for activities. There were also paid opportunities to have fun such as wellness day.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe my work made an impact at the company. My work was used on an actual project for a client and was able to catch an error in the code. My project is also being used now even after the end of my internship. The documentation I wrote will be used in the future by whoever takes over my project.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My internship with Collins Aerospace was a great experience and I learned a lot from it. I had a great time and met some great people while improving my coding and networking skills. I got the chance to see what it is like working in the industry and work on a project that would have an impact.

Safety and Remediation Updates

Dear UMBC Community,

As you know, teams are actively repairing damage to buildings across campus from water line breaks, caused by a power outage coupled with record low temperatures, over the winter break. We are writing to update the community on the measures we are taking to ensure that buildings are safe for community members as they reopen.

Water extraction and drying efforts began immediately after the water line breaks were contained.

Environmental Safety and Health, in partnership with an industrial hygienist, evaluated these areas to ensure that there was not remaining moisture that might spur mold growth.

Professional water remediation contractors are in the process of removing and replacing any affected walls that retained moisture.

As this work is completed and before spaces and buildings reopen, each space will receive a final cleaning.

All HVAC filters in air handling units in affected spaces will also be changed after construction is complete and regularly thereafter.

Our team is following all industry best practices to make sure that spaces are free of mold, dust, and other health challenges before they can be occupied. Every effort is being made to restore all campus spaces back to their previous conditions before the events occurred.

At this time, the Administration Building, Biological Sciences, and Schwartz Hall remain closed. Once remediation efforts have been completed and fire alarm and other safety systems are operational, we anticipate these buildings will partially reopen. However, we expect continued repairs will make it impossible to fully reopen these buildings for some time. We are working closely with building occupants to understand the immediate effect on research, staff work, and upcoming classes and to make alternative arrangements as necessary. When we have a clear reopening timeline, we will share that with the campus community.

We appreciate your support and patience as we make these repairs.

Tim Sparklin, Director of the Office of Research Protections and Compliance (ORPC), in the Office of Research and Creative Achievement (ORCA) will be retiring from UMBC after 39 years of USM service with over 30 years at UMBC.

An in-person Open House Event will be held in the Skylight Room on the 3rd floor of Commons from 1PM-4PM on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. (Please note the new time and location)

Tim obtained his BA in Sociology from UMBC in 1981 and his Masters of Social Work from UMB in 1983. So his connection to USM actually started as a freshman in 1977 (over 45 years)!

Tim's family connections to UMBC run even deeper. Two of Tim's children graduated from our campus, his wife Kim spent two years at UMBC working her way to obtaining a Bachelor's of Nursing at UMB. He also has two siblings and two nieces who received degrees from UMBC.

Tim started working at UMB as a Research Assistant in the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. From 1983 - 1985 he provided assistance on a trauma and motorcycle helmet use study prior to Maryland enacting its helmet laws in 1992. Tim was promoted to Program Analyst, then in 1987 to Grants and Contracts Administrator (when he was bit by the Research Admin bug).

He then came to UMBC in 1992 to become a Grants Manager for what was then called the College of Arts and Sciences, where, his value was quickly recognized. Tim was promoted to Research Services Administrator before coming to ORCA to run UMBC's Human and Animal Research Protections Office (HARPO) in 2004.

In January of 2011, Tim led HARPO in a rebranding effort to recognize the growth in UMBC's research and compliance areas needing support. In 2010 we had 375 human and 37 animal support actions. The office was renamed the Office of Research Protections and Compliance (ORPC). ORPC support expanded to include Institutional Biosafety, Conflict of Interest, Export Control, Responsible Conduct in Research and Research Integrity. And, by FY21 ORPC with just 2.6 staff processed nearly 2,000 compliance actions (down from 2,400 in FY20), and supported nearly 2,700 trainings (individuals trained in the various areas of compliance).

As Director of ORPC Tim provided administrative oversight and the strategic direction of ORPC's centralized resources to ensure UMBC conducted its research activities in a manner consistent with federal, state and institutional regulatory requirements. In this role Tim served as the primary liaison with federal regulatory agencies and provided periodic updates and recommended actions to senior management as issues demand institutional response.

Not only did Tim significantly expanded ORPC's areas of compliance support, he totally revamped the web site, implemented a new electronic compliance support system (Kuali Compliance), went paperless, moved the office, provided key support for the new ILSB vivarium, and implemented countless procedures, policies and general guidance documents to streamline and clarify the constant changing regulations associated with this field. And, as if this was not enough, Tim has conducted in-person training for graduate and undergraduate students in the area of Responsible Conduct in Research. These are only a few of the many accomplishments during Tim's time with UMBC and USM. And, during that entire time, Tim has been consistently recognized by UMBC faculty, staff and his USM peers for his skills and knowledge, and genuine willingness and desire to help support research and creative achievement. Throughout, Tim epitomized what customer support means.

Tim had also been very active in shared governance at UMBC, serving as President and Past President of the Professional Staff Senate. Tim has also been involved in multiple industry related organizations such as the Society of Research Administrators International (SRA), where he was a member of their Board of Directors, and held the positions of President Elect, President, and Past President of the Northeast Section from 2021-2014. Tim has also shared his experience and knowledge through multiple presentations and Panel discussions. Besides SRA, Tim was a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), the Laboratory Animal Welfare Training Exchange, the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Public Responsibly in Medicine and Research, a member of the University of Maryland, Baltimore IACUC, and the Association of University Export Control Officers. Tim was often called upon by sister campuses to assist with their protections and compliance programs and to answer specific questions.

Tim's unwavering drive to support UMBC in a positive supportive manner won him multiple accolades from his team, the researchers he served, and senior leadership. His unique ability to balance the overwhelming regulatory requirements with the level of reassurance that minimizes the burden on our research community and not a "police state" is unique. Faculty often commented on ORPC's support, stating things like, "I am consistently astonished by how helpful, informed, patient, and responsive"...ORPC is...ORPC "asks great questions, handles emergency requests gracefully"...and generally makes it "possible for me to do better research."

In Tim's personal life, Tim loves to garden. His house in Catonsville is a treasure trove of multiple variety of trees and plants he and his wife Kim of (40 Years) maintain. Tim has three sons and two grandchildren, which in retirement he expects to spend a great deal more time. Tim recently commented that he hopes to chillax, and maybe travel to Ireland and Scotland.

Tim has always brought a sense of calm and steadiness to the office. While we will all miss Tim, please join us in wishing him nothing but happiness as he embarks on his next journey.

Tim's last day on campus is Tuesday, January 31, 2023. Please join us in celebrating his retirement and wishing him well.
