    <div>
    <strong>Work Term</strong>: Summer 2021</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>During Summer 2021, I was given an opportunity by Moss Adams (MA) to intern within their Portland, Oregon Office. Moss Adams is an accounting firm based on the West Coast with 25 offices in total. During my time with the MA Portland Office, I was able to shadow the Tax, Audit, and Consulting departments as well as work on operational projects with other interns. The shadowing experience was 3 weeks long, with 1 week in each department. This process allowed me to narrow down which department I wanted to work in as a full-time employee. Furthermore, the operational projects allowed me to be creative and develop my leadership skills. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>During the Spring 2021 semester, I found this opportunity on LinkedIn, however I narrowed my search to specifically opportunities within the Washington and Oregon states. Before applying for this internship, I thoroughly looked through the Moss Adams website to get as many details as I could about the company. In addition, I used platforms such Glassdoor to read reviews about the company from employees and previous interns. After I was confident in the company and had adequate information for my specific internship, I applied. The application process was done through the Moss Adams website. A week after applying, I heard back from a recruiter for my first round interview (mostly relating to technical questions). After doing this interview, I received an email saying that I was through to the second round interview (I generally chatted with 2 Manager/Director level employees). Soon after the second interview, I received an offer!</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization? </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>From reading about it in reviews and articles to experiencing it first hand, the best part about Moss Adams has to be the culture! Everyone is friendly and willing to help you in any way possible. I'll give a quick example: for a project during the internship, I had to reach out to different people within my office (of my choice). I decided to reach out to 2 firm partners. You would think their schedule is too packed to be able to sit down for a chat, but they made time. Thus, there are a lot of opportunities to network!</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>I made an impact at Moss Adams through the charity fundraiser project. My team and I were able to raise $10,000 over 2 weeks time for the Oregon Parks Forever Charity. Our campaign was about replanting trees after the wildfires that happened in Oregon. $1 = 1 tree replanted, thus we replanted 10,000 trees!</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Do your research! Never apply without all the appropriate knowledge on the company, especially for interviews. And if you can, talk to current or recent employees/interns from the company you want to work at. People are the best resource! </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Know what you want out of the internship. </div>

Maybe you’ve also heard of the <a href="https://www.girlscouts.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Girl Scouts</a>? <a href="https://radicalmonarchs.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Radical Monarchs</a>? Or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumberjanes" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Lumberjanes</a>? Our Scouts program is kind of like that. Nonetheless, there are Women’s Center badges out there waiting to be earned!</p>

  <Title>Considering Graduate or Professional School?</Title>
  <Tagline>Check out some tips for beginning the Application Process!</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content">
    <div>Are you interested in Graduate or Professional school? As you explore programs and get started on the application process, here are some useful tips to keep in mind!  </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Take time to find the right program fit! </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Is there something in your major or academic program that’s drawing you to consider applying to graduate or professional school? Don’t be afraid to start the conversation with advisors or professors in your academic department to start to think about pathways that might be right for you. UMBC faculty were once where you are right now, and will undoubtedly have great insight about the process or connections to programs that might interest you. Use your networks to your advantage! </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Once you research programs that interest you, try to visit those schools – check out in-person and virtual admissions/recruitment events put on by the institutions and connect with the campus. You’ll have the opportunity to explore how the campus is laid out and learn about the surrounding area, housing options, and the studio/classroom/lab facilities. Ultimately, you should be asking yourself, <em>“how is the campus and does it seem like the type of environment I would like to spend time in?” </em>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>You’ll also have the chance to connect with program directors, faculty and current graduate students. You’ll want to consider whether or not the program has a professor who shares your research areas of interest. And meeting current students is especially important if your program will use a “cohort” model – meaning you will work with the same people throughout the duration of the program. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Finally, take time to research class options – some programs will provide more flexible schedule options including evening, weekend or online classes, while other programs may be more traditional and have classes throughout the day. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div><strong>Graduate Admissions  </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The majority of graduate and professional programs will require you to complete an entrance exam, similar to taking the SAT or ACT when applying to UMBC. See below for which exam you might be expected to take: </div>
    <div><ul>
    <li>Dental School:<a href="https://www.ada.org/en/education-careers/dental-admission-test" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> DAT </a>(Dental Admission Test)  </li>
    <li>Business and Management Schools:<a href="https://www.mba.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> GMAT </a>(Graduate Management Admission Test)  </li>
    </ul></div>
    <div><ul>
    <li>Master’s and Doctoral Programs:<a href="https://www.ets.org/gre" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> GRE </a>(Graduate Record Examination) *Most common graduate admissions exam*  </li>
    <li>Law School:<a href="https://www.lsac.org/lsat" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> LSAT </a>(Law School Admission Test)  </li>
    <li>Medical School:<a href="https://students-residents.aamc.org/taking-mcat-exam/taking-mcat-exam" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> MCAT </a>(Medical College Admission Test) </li>
    <li>Pharmacy School:<a href="https://www.pearsonassessments.com/graduate-admissions/pcat/about.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> PCAT </a>(Pharmacy College Admission Test)  </li>
    </ul></div>
    <div>For graduate programs in the Visual or Performing Arts (such as Master of Fine Arts programs), you might need to prepare for an audition or portfolio submission of creative work as well. It’s important to research all the components necessary for any application and make sure you start the application process early!  </div>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div><strong>Letters of Recommendation – ask early and ask people who know you best! </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Most applications to graduate or professional school will require you to submit letters of recommendation. Your recommenders should be individuals who know you well, such as a professor who taught you in several courses or a research mentor. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Start by setting up a meeting to ask for a recommendation, which will help emphasize how important the letter is to you and give you the chance to provide context and answer questions your prospective recommender might have. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Allow at least two months prior to the deadline to give your recommenders enough time to complete the recommendation. </div>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div><strong>Funding Graduate or Professional School  </strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Another important aspect to consider is how exactly you will be funding your graduate or professional school program. The UMBC Career Center does a great job at breaking down the different components associated with <a href="https://careers.umbc.edu/students/gradschool/funding/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">funding your graduate education</a>. It’s important to make sure you understand if there are scholarships, grants, financial aid or graduate assistantships available through the program you are exploring.  </div>
    </div>
