Hello, my name is Grace
De Oro (she, her) and I am the Adult Learner Graduate Assistant for Off-Campus
Student Services. This August I celebrated 2 years of working alongside the
Staff in OCSS. I am a Ph.D. student in the School
of Public Policy and recently graduated in May 2019 from UMBC with my Masters
in Public Policy with a concentration in Environmental Policy. I will be
hopefully defending my dissertation proposal this year. I am currently focusing
my research on nonprofit organizations’ resilience through the COVID-19
Pandemic as well as their relationship to government. I commute from Woodbine,
MD (Western Howard County), where I live on a small 5-acre farmincluding cats, horses, a miniature donkey,
chickens, ducks, goats, snakes, and many, many dogs. I will be on-campus in the office on

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
This past summer, my internship was virtual, and I had the opportunity to work with two different teams in my department. My day-to-day activities included joining different types of meetings and events throughout day as well as working on my coding assignments. Every morning I would join the agile stand-up meeting, where everyone on the team would share updates regarding their current assignments. This was a great time for me to get an understanding about the business side of the team. In the afternoon, there were ‘office hours’ where all the software engineers on the team would help each other as needed. That was a great time for me to ask questions, but I also talked with my tech supervisor throughout the day to get feedback and guidance.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I started researching internship programs last fall semester. I applied to T. Rowe’s Global Technology Internship in early December and heard back around January. First, I had a phone interview with a recruiter. After that, I had a video interview with my current manager and team leaders.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
My favorite part about my position was meeting so many great people. I had the opportunity to network with many people from different teams and ask them about their experiences. Everyone was so willing to help and provide perspective.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Start preparing early! Most applications are due before you realize it. Get your resume reviewed as soon as possible and always keep it updated. Start looking for applications early in the fall semester and in the meantime prepare for interviews. Scheduling a mock interview is a good way to figure out what you need to improve on. By the time recruiters reach out to you, you’ll be ready for the interview.

The UMBC Review: Journal of Undergraduate Research is currently soliciting submissions for its 23rd edition to be published in April, 2022. We invite you to submit your research to our journal. The Review offers a rewarding opportunity to get your undergraduate research published, build your resume, and improve your writing!
The deadline to submit has been extended to Friday, September 24th.The submission application can be found at: https://ur.umbc.edu/umbc-review/. Click “Submit Here!” We encourage students of all majors and disciplines to send in their research! Your papers do not have to be ready for publication or perfect right now, we just want to see the best work and research you have completed! Reach out to umbcreview@umbc.eduif you have any questions.
- Your paper: (8-30 pages including title page and bibliography), uploaded as a Word document. If your paper is over 30 pages, you can submit it as it is, but please keep in mind that you may be asked to reduce it if your paper is accepted. The paper must conform to the UMBC Review Style Guidelines, which you can find on our website.
- Abstract: Include a 200 word abstract that summarizes your project.This should be written for non-experts in the field, and should include your research question, scholarly relevance, description of your methods, major findings, and implications.
- Author Biography: 150 word biography that includes your name, major(s),/minor(s), graduation date, professional acknowledgements, honors/scholars program affiliations, future academic and career goals. If you have already graduated, you can still submit your work - as long as the research was completed during your undergraduate studies.
- Research Journey: Please submit a 200 word description of how you came to study this topic. The point of this paragraph is to demystify the process of doing research or creative work for the reader. What sparked your interest in this research? Who helped you to complete it? Why are you passionate about it? What courses, professors, or readings inspired you? We recommend taking a look at research journeys from the prior editions of the UMBC Review for further clarification: https://ur.umbc.edu/umbc-review/editions/.
Advisor Recommendation Form:
Your advisor/mentor will also need to submit our Advisor Recommendation form. This form is a very important part of your application, as we need to know that your advisor supports the paper you submitted! Please make sure it is submitted by the final deadline. If you submit your paper by the priority deadline, the advisor form is not necessary for you to receive feedback. Remember to keep your advisor informed of any changes you make to the paper before submission.
The advisor recommendation form also asks advisors to suggest possible outside reviewers for your paper. We strongly encourage advisors to provide names of reviewers who are professionals in your field of study in this portion of the form. Peer-reviewers can be professors at other universities or professionals in the field (for example, a museum curator for a paper that focuses on museums). Peer-reviewers cannot be UMBC faculty.

I am writing to inform you that we have secured the services of Storbeck Search LLC, a nationally recognized executive search firm, to assist the University in the launch and successful completion of a national search for the permanent Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The search process, which will welcome applications from both internal and external candidates, will begin in early October. We anticipate receiving and reviewing applications by the end of the calendar year, and conducting interviews at the start of the spring semester. This September 15 from 12 - 1, join us for our opening SWSA meeting this fall with speaker Simone Kolysh, MPH, PhD, author of Everyday Violence: The Public Harassment of Women and LGBTQ People.
We'll be introducing the new board for 2021-2022, sharing our goals, and connecting in order to support each other and accomplish the social justice and care-oriented goals of Social Work. We will also be hosting speech and discussion with Dr. Kolysh.
Simone Kolysh, MPH, PhD, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Hood College, is a lesbian agender mother of four and a feminist scholar of race, gender, and sexuality committed to a revolutionary future. Their background in Biology, Public Health, LGBTQ studies, and Sociology aids their interdisciplinary work and scholar-activism. A culmination of the last ten years, Dr. Kolysh’s book, Everyday Violence: The Public Harassment of Women and LGBTQ People, was published in August 2021 with Rutgers University Press.

Part 2 of the workshop will be held TOMORROW, September 10 on the UMBC campus in the Biological Sciences Building, BIO 120. You will have the option to attend one of the following sessions 2:00 - 3:00 pm OR 3:15 - 4:15 pm. A link will be shared at the conclusion of the Part 1 workshop to register for the in-person event. COVID safety protocols will be practiced.
You MUST complete both the online and in-person sessions to receive your White-Belt certification.
