Mental health concerns, including thoughts of suicide, may arise because of experiences of oppression.

To Our Queer and Trancestors: Time Traveling

    <Tagline>Pride Month 2021</Tagline>

At Lavender Celebration this year, I shared that every day we create LGBTQ+ futures and that this is a declaration and imagining of new realities. Our very existence is a declaration and a celebration. I want us to spend some time in the past as well - to time travel this Pride Month. Let’s honor the folx who have come before us and added to the imagining of Queer and Trans futures. Our Queer and Trancestors who imagined new time and new realities, who imagined and resisted and fought for new realities. Take the time to honor them, know them and thank them.

Who are your Queer and Trancestors?

To Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera

To Gloria Anzaldúa and Alexa Negron Luciano

To Tony McDade and Nina Pop

To those who lived and loved in time past with the hopes of times to come.

I share with you this poem by Jose Richard Aviles (they/them/he) (@soynalgona on Instagram), an activist, social worker, and urban planner. I highly encourage you to check out the spoken word version of it on Instagram and we will share it on our i3b Instagram (@umbc_i3b).

The spirituality of queerness

A force field of

unconditional love

The first flower to bloom in

A post-apocalyptic heart

Our claim to liberation

Is in deciphering

shadows

Queerness is a dance

A choreography between shame and pleasure

I have grown accustomed to their wandering eyes

The essence of my being tickles

Their blushed cheeks

I love unapologetically

In the name of the ancestors who had to love in secret

What does it mean for us to be a good descendant? How can we honor the legacies that have come before us, while paving the way for a time to come? How can we be the time travelers of the imagining and working towards a different time and space? All of these questions are for us to make the time to reflect and honor this Pride Month and beyond. And to remember that we too, in time, will be Queer and Trancestors.

Dear UMBC Community,

Given the improving health situation and evolving guidance, we are providing this update to the domestic travel policy message we issued earlier this month. University-related domestic business travel for faculty, staff, and students will resume on June 1, 2021, and the exception process described in our May 7 message will be rescinded. The University will reinstate pre-pandemic approval policies, including the requirement that all out-of-state and overnight in-state travel be approved prior to making any travel arrangements.

Failure to obtain this approval prior to making travel arrangements will result in denial of reimbursement regardless of the funding source. Student organizations should await guidance from the Division of Student Affairs for travel during the summer and fall 2021. New requests for University-related international travel are not being considered at this time and will not be approved.

The University will continue following the guidance of federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Governor, and the Maryland Department of Health for all University-related travel for faculty, staff, and students. University-related travel is travel for educational, research, or business purposes tied to the traveler's affiliation with the University.

All travelers on University-related out-of-state travel are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the start date of their travel unless appropriate waiver documentation is on file with the University.

Please review the following guidance prior to requesting approval for domestic University-related travel. We require and expect travelers to continue practicing all COVID-19 health and safety protocols according to CDC guidance and to comply with state and local mandates. Travelers must also be aware of and comply with current health and safety protocols at their destination site. Travelers will be required to acknowledge that they have reviewed and are in compliance with this guidance:
