  <Title>URCAD Sneak Peek: Meredith Power</Title>

She will present her research, "<span>Uncertainties Spiritual and Temporal: The Plight of England's Catholic Nuns at the Dissolution of the Monasteries" </span><span>at URCAD.</span></div><div><br></div><div>URCAD is April 19-25, 2021</div><div>URCAD.umbc.edu</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><u>Abstract</u></div><div>Mentor: Amy Froide, History</div><div><br></div><div><span>A variety of communities of religious women dotted the English landscape in the early sixteenth century. Most all but vanished after the Reformation. The women at the head of these communities wielded various amounts of power, both inside their walls and in the local towns and villages. As the English Reformation took hold in the 1530s and monasteries were abolished, these women responded to the upheaval in their lives in a variety of ways. Some accepted their fates and meager pensions, while others turned to powerful allies and patrons for assistance and relief. Some women renounced their vows, and others fled to the European continent to maintain their Catholic faith without fear of persecution. Few records about the nuns survive, but a careful review of pension rolls, state papers, and correspondence from this tumultuous period reveals that England's Catholic nuns responded to the criminalization of their faith and the loss of their homes in both familiar and surprising ways. Two thousand women's lives were uprooted when the government closed and destroyed all of England's Catholic religious houses. Their abrupt disappearance, both from their local communities and the historical record, merits further study.</span></div></div>

  <Title>Appreciation for Faculty and Staff</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Key Points:</span></p><br><ul><li><p><span>Governor Hogan’s budget provides a $1,000 bonus for state employees, including USM faculty and staff.</span></p></li><li><p><span>A more positive budget outlook also allows temporary salary reductions affecting some UMBC employees to end earlier than expected.</span></p></li></ul><br><p><span>Dear Colleagues,</span></p><br><p><span>We are pleased to confirm that the extraordinary work of UMBC and other state employees during the pandemic will be recognized with a $1,000 bonus, a step proposed by Governor Hogan and now passed by the General Assembly. </span></p><br><p><span>Regular faculty and staff and Contingent II employees will receive the one-time bonus of up to $1,000. The bonus will be pro-rated for eligible part-time employees (e.g., 50%= $500, 75%=$750, etc.). Graduate Assistants and Contingent I employees are not eligible. </span></p><p><span>The bonus payments will be processed by the Human Resources Department and will be reflected in the paychecks issued April 30, 2021.   </span></p><br><p><span>We are also pleased to announce the early end of temporary salary reductions for faculty and staff earning $100,000 and above, which was part of a multi-point plan to protect campus jobs. </span><span>This will be reflected in the paychecks issued April 16, 2021.</span></p><br><p><span>Both the one-time bonus and early restoration of full salaries were made possible by  prompt, aggressive budget actions taken this past year in the face of projected pandemic-related revenue declines, including diligence in adhering to the hiring freeze, and greater operating savings than expected. The University has also benefited from Federal stimulus funding, which is being used to cover pandemic-related costs originally expected to be supported from regular operating funds.</span></p><br><p><span>We are deeply grateful for all that you are doing to keep our campus community safe and healthy and to support academic progress and business operations during this difficult time. While we will continue to face operational and fiscal challenges through the pandemic and beyond, this year has affirmed that we know how to get through them together.   <Title>Choose Your Own Adventure... I Mean, Major!</Title>
  <Tagline>A closer look at the Individualized Study Program at UMBC</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Deciding on an academic
    major is a big deal! We have so many options at UMBC, including a unique major
    for students interested in carving out their pathway.</span></p>
    
    <p><span>Do you have so many
    academic interests that it's challenging to pick just one? Are you curious how
    different academic disciplines can intersect? Do you want the chance to have
    more "say" in the types of classes you take? The Individualized Study
    Program at UMBC might be just what you're looking for!</span></p>
    
    <p><span>We interviewed Carrie
    Sauter, Assistant Director of the INDS Program, to bring you more information
    about this exciting opportunity.</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>EC:</span></strong><span> Can you briefly describe the
    Individualized Studies program? What are the benefits to a student who selects
    this path?</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>CS:</span></strong><span> Individualized Study (INDS) is a unique
    path for a highly motivated undergraduate student to design their own major to
    meet specific goals. Students in the program merge courses from several
    disciplines into one themed degree plan. In addition to our core courses, we
    encourage internships and research outside the classroom. A quote from one of
    our alums: "My INDS degree has provided me: (1) critical thinking skills
    (2) tools to facilitate interprofessional conversations (3) fostered my
    understanding of research methods and application to research projects and (4)
    developed a sense of curiosity to understand problems from multiple
    perspectives."</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>EC:</span></strong><span> What additional work is involved to officially "declare"
    INDS. Can you talk a bit about the proposal writing process?</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>CS:</span></strong><span> We encourage anyone at any stage of their
    academic career to consider INDS. Obviously, we would like to start advising
    students as early as possible, even before transferring to UMBC. Our core
    curriculum is a minimum of four semesters, and we would be happy to talk to
    students about how that can work with their goal graduation date. To declare
    INDS, students simply need to meet with an advisor in the program and obtain a
    signature on the Declaration of Major form. While in the second course in our
    core curriculum, INDS 335 <em>Degree Writing Seminar</em>, students craft a
    degree plan, present it to our faculty committee, and secure two degree
    mentors. The degree plan consists of a list of classes in a timeline and a
    narrative of why this major is best suited for the student, definitions for
    particular aspects in the degree, and ways this degree plan connects to
    immediate and long-term goals.</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>EC:</span></strong><span> Besides the fact that you are creating your
    own degree plan, what do you think sets the INDS major apart from other majors?</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>CS:</span></strong><span> INDS students stand out in any application
    process: employers, graduate school admissions, medical school committees. Our
    students and graduates say they can think across disciplines, consider other
    viewpoints, and communicate clearly. We also require INDS students to complete
    a capstone project completed in their final year.</span></p>
    
    <p><span>A quote from an alum:
    "In the public health field, I am constantly interacting with
    professionals from other fields and disciplines such as social workers, medical
    doctors, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and a variety of researchers. As an
    Individualized Study student, I learned to see the strengths each different
    discipline could offer to address a problem and create an optimal solution no
    discipline could independently develop. Instead of seeing divides between my
    colleagues from different fields, I see connections and ways to build bridges
    by avoiding stereotypes of certain fields and communicating with a shared
    language. This perspective will help me work more effectively with colleagues
    from a variety of professions to help create more comprehensive culturally
    appropriate health programs as a future physician aiming to promote integrative
    care."</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>EC</span></strong><span> Any notable alumni stories you can share?
    Any exciting things alumni have gone on to do?</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>CS:</span></strong><span> INDS students have gone on to medical
    school, law school, physical therapy school, doctoral programs, and employment
    across diverse fields. We also have several alumni who have started their own
    business after graduation. Notable highlights of graduates from the past eight
    years include two graduates with fully-funded Ph.D. programs at Harvard
    University and University of Manchester (UK); full-tuition merit scholarship to
    George Washington University School of Law; Forensic Chemist at Prince George's
    County Police Department; software engineer at Northrop Grumman; Biomedical
    Engineering Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; professor of
    entrepreneurship and business at Howard Community College; Software Developer
    at Booz Allen Hamilton.</span></p>

  <Title>URCAD Sneak Peek: ryy casper</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Don't miss URA Scholar, ryy casper's film and presentation, "16mm Film Archive for the Visual Arts Department"</span><div><span><strong><br></strong></span></div><div><span><strong>URCAD.umbc.edu</strong></span></div><div><span><strong>April 19-25, 2021<br></strong></span><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><span><u>Abstract</u></span></div><div><span>Mentor: Cathy Cook, Visual Arts</span></div><div><span><span>Almost six hundred 16mm films laid in an overwhelming heap with strips of film disconnected, roaming astray, unspliced, dirty, and been left to rot since the 1970's. They occupied the end of the Fine Arts building hallway with a Steenbeck viewing machine thanks to Professor Cathy Cook and Christian Valiente who believed they would one day be useful. For this project, over the course of two semesters, I went through all of these films, archived, cleaned, fixed, catalogued, dated, keyword-ed, organized numerically and by genre. all of these films. The genres include Documentary, Educational, Experimental, Narrative, Student, Advertisements, and Miscellaneous. The earliest film found was a D.W. Griffith print from 1912 and the latest from UMBC students sometime in the mid-90s. The hope is that this archive will make the films far more accessible and allow for potential student and faculty use. With some of my most coveted footage that I found in the archive, I created my own poetic and experimental twenty minute found footage film,</span><span> it happened one ritual once aboard time;</span><span> which explores place, time, and intimacy.</span></span></div></div></div>

    <Title>The Power of Movement</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>What comes to mind when you hear the words, “physical fitness?” You may have thought about a physical education class or maybe even a social media fitness influencer. But there’s more to physical fitness than meets the eye. </span></p><p><span>Fitness is the ability to carry out daily tasks without excessive fatigue. It’s best to think of physical fitness as a commitment to </span><span><strong>moving more </strong></span><span>each day.</span></p><p><span>The CDC recommends that adults get at least 2.5 hours of </span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/basics/measuring/index.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>moderate-intensity aerobic activity and two hours of strength training each week.</span></a><span> </span></p><p><span>Fitness isn’t limited to those who frequent the gym, athletes, or self-proclaimed fitness gurus. </span></p><p><span><strong>All students, regardless of body composition, fitness level, or ability, can benefit from some form of movement.</strong></span></p><p><span>Even small increases in the amount of movement performed each day can:</span></p><ul><li><span>Reduce risk of cardiovascular disease</span></li><li>Release endorphins that improve mood and reduce anxiety</li><li>Improve quality of sleep</li><li>Promote concentration and overall brain health </li></ul><p><span>Moving more can be a chore for many of us</span><span>— </span><span>but it doesn’t have to be. Here are five tips that’ll make you look forward to incorporating more movement in your daily routine.</span></p><ol><li><span><strong>Motivate each other. </strong></span>Build connections with others by joining a virtual fitness class or working out with a roommate. Encourage each other as you achieve fitness goals.</li><li><strong>Mix it up.</strong><span> </span>Plan different activities to avoid boredom.<span>If you did a yoga class one day, try water aerobics or dancing to your favorite songs the next day. Create an inspirational playlist to get you through the toughest workouts.</span></li><li><strong>Start slow<span>.</span></strong><span> </span>If you’re new to physical activity, try starting off with light-intensity activities like taking a leisurely walk or doing dumbbell curls using water bottles or lighter weights. Then, gradually progress to moderate and vigorous activities like jogging, playing a sport, or doing a high-intensity chair workout. </li><li><strong>Reward yourself.</strong> When you achieve a fitness goal, treat yourself to something that brings you joy like your favorite meal or a new clothing item.</li><li><strong>Use your resources.</strong> There are plenty of sample workouts, weekly fitness journals, and how-to guides on apps like YouTube, TikTok, Nike Training Club, and Strava.   <Title>Launching Your Creative Career</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>If you're an aspiring artist or media professional, you already know that there's no foolproof formula for building a career in creative fields. Success takes... well... creativity. That is, you'll need to apply an open-minded, entrepreneurial approach when it comes to launching your career. The tactics below are a great place to start. </div><div><ul><li><strong>Expand your repertoire. </strong>You're already building a solid foundation in your coursework. What additional skills could make you more versatile and competitive as an applicant for creative jobs? Could you deepen your web design skills, learn search engine optimization, delve into a new animation tool, take up podcasting? Talk to professors, recruiters, alumni, and other working professionals about what's hot in your industry.</li><li><strong>Build your personal brand. </strong>Put those creative skills to use in developing an online portfolio and/or demo reel that showcases not only your work, but your aesthetic. Make sure your resume, cover letter, and any other documents fit the brand, too. And what about social media? Consider devoting at least one of your platforms to sharing your creative work and other content related to your field.</li><li><strong>Freelance. </strong>Especially if you haven't yet had an internship, freelancing can be a fantastic way to build your portfolio, connections, and experience with producing real work for real clients. You can share your services by word-of-mouth, or seek clients through websites like Upwork and Fiverr.</li><li><strong>Connect with other creatives. </strong>Many (if not most!) creative professionals got their first big career opportunity through people they know. Consider joining a professional association specific to your area, such as AIGA (for designers) or the Public Relations Student Society of America. Many of these host networking events just for students and new professionals.
