Diversity and Inclusion at the CIA

ADVANCING THE GLOBAL MISSION

In order for the CIA to meet our mission of protecting our national security interests, we need to employ a workforce as diverse as America itself – the most diverse nation on earth. Diversity reflects the unique ways we vary as Intelligence Officers – our nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, age, language, culture, sexual orientation, education, values, beliefs, abilities and disabilities. These assorted attributes create different demographic, functional and intellectual views, which are so vital to our innovation, agility, collection and analysis.

At the CIA, we are dedicated to promoting the critical diversity our mission demands. By assembling an organization of smart, focused people from a myriad of occupations and cultures, and who have a wide variety of abilities and experiences, we produce a dynamic workforce with unlimited potential. Our diversity expands and enriches our perspective, strengthening our ability to look deeper and understand more. By leveraging the strengths of every individual and fostering an inclusive environment, we are getting the very best that our workforce has to offer, which allows us to successfully meet the intelligence challenges of today – and tomorrow.

ATTRACTING DIVERSE TALENT

The CIA is dedicated to building a world-class, high-performing and diverse workforce that allows us to meet the increasing threats and challenges to our nation. Building a diverse and inclusive workforce begins with robust outreach and recruitment strategies that reach a wide spectrum of the population. We focus on strengthening relations with:

■ colleges and universities

■ diverse professional organizations

■ heritage-based groups

■ minority-serving institutions from across the country

Engagement with these groups raises awareness and understanding about the CIA’s work and expands sources of mission critical talent.

INSTILLING INCLUSIVE WORK PRACTICES

The CIA fosters a culture of inclusion so that we can fully leverage our talented and dedicated workforce, ensuring every officer’s views are heard and that their ideas and skills are given due consideration. The Agency strives to make our workplace accessible to all employees to allow them to contribute in the fullest ways possible. The Agency offers a wide range of reasonable accommodations for our employees with disabilities so that every officer is able to contribute his or her courage, insight and knowledge to our mission without distraction or uncertainty.

Agency Resource Groups (ARGs), traditionally known as Affinity Groups, play an important role in creating a positive and inclusive workplace. ARGs identify and inform leadership of important trends in diversity and inclusion; they help the CIA work through challenges, some shared and some unique to individual groups, that are closely tied to employee engagement, career advancement and retention; and they help facilitate professional development through mentoring, seminars, brown bag discussions and informal interactions with more experienced Intelligence Officers.

The following ARGs are open to all staff employees at the CIA:

■ Agency Network of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Officers and Allies (ANGLE)
■ American Veterans Employee Resource Group (AVERG)
■ Asian Pacific American Organization (APAO)
■ Blacks In Government (BIG) UMOJA Chapter
■ Deaf Advisory Council (DAC)
■ Disability Advisory Panel (DAP)
■ Generations Council (GENCO)
■ Hispanic Advisory Council (HAC)
■ Mid-Career Hires Council (MCHC)
■ Multicultural Inclusion Exchange (The MIX)
■ Native American Council (NAC)
■ Near East Affinity Group (NEAG)
■ South Asia Leadership and Advisory Membership (SALAAM)
■ Women’s Coordination Board (WCB)
■ Workplace Flexibility and Balance (WFB)

“Diversity carries special importance here at CIA. Because of our global charter, we need talent from every culture, all backgrounds and every perspective to accomplish our mission. And given the complexity of our work, we need to hire our country’s best and brightest, regardless of what they look like, where they grew up or who their parents were. In short, CIA must be an employer of choice for all Americans who want to serve our country, a place where officers of every description can rise as far as their talent and ambition can take them.” – Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA

The CIA is America’s premier intelligence agency and is committed to building and maintaining a workforce as diverse as the nation it serves.

For additional information and to apply, visit: cia.gov/careers

THE WORK OF A NATION. THE CENTER OF INTELLIGENCE. cia.gov/careers

An equal opportunity employer and a drug-free workforce.

Technology is at the Heart of Everything We Do

  <Tagline>Stem Careers with the CIA</Tagline>

Use your skills in ways you never thought possible

If you’re a STEM professional, you can find an interesting career almost anywhere.

But at the CIA, you can find even more — the opportunity to have a career that’s both substantial and inspiring.

Whether you’re a weapons analyst or a web designer, a data scientist or a computer scientist, a digital imaging technician or able to process digital signals, a cartographer or an electrical engineer, joining the nation’s premier intelligence agency means working with cutting-edge, classified technology — and using your extraordinary talents to help protect American lives.

If you are smart and dedicated — and you can imagine no greater mission than contributing to the safety of our country — there is a place for you at the CIA.

What role is right for you? Explore the CIA Job Fit Tool at: cia.gov/careers/opportunities/job-fit-tool

AN AGENCY FOUNDED IN TECHNOLOGY

Mobile devices and miniaturization. Agile software development. Space systems. Nanotechnology. The frontiers of chemistry, electrochemistry and applied physics. Data mining on an unprecedented scale. Cybersecurity. Few organizations can offer such a wide range of advanced scientific and technical disciplines. Fewer still can offer the challenge of responding to changing threats with speed and accuracy.

Intelligence collection by its very nature has always depended on the best technology available. That is why we need astute, flexible, technical, savvy and scientific professionals who want to take on some of the most complex and demanding work anywhere. Deploy network countermeasures working across layers and devices. Engineer fool-proof security systems that can stand up to relentless assaults. Monitor happenings from space for the safety of life on earth. Create devices that gather data where it seems impossibly inaccessible. Or support national security in a myriad of other ways. In every case, the careers here are central to preserving the ideals upon which our country was founded.

“I have the coolest job in the world. It combines biology, chemistry, optics and acoustics. I’m getting to do things I never thought I would.” — Katie B., DS&T Technical Intelligence Officer

55% of all CIA jobs are in STEM fields

Over 30% of Analysts have STEM backgrounds

25-30% of Clandestine Officers have STEM backgrounds

“The President actually listens to what I say.” — Bryce T., Senior Officer

STEM POSITIONS THAT ARE ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY

You might be surprised to know that more than half of the careers at the CIA are in STEM fields. Each Officer plays a role in responding to threats to our country and its allies. In many scenarios, the rapid deployment of technology has become integral to America’s front line against danger. Technical solutions are thus currently at the heart of everything we do. Innovations in the lab soon find themselves in the field anywhere in the world.

No wonder the Agency has a long heritage of groundbreaking wizardry stunningly ahead of the commercial sector: An unmanned aerial vehicle the size of a dragonfly in the 1970s. Spy planes that captured a resolution of 2.5 feet from 70,000 feet up in the late 1960s. Lithium-ion batteries created in the 1960s that enhanced surveillance and later became the “heart” of cardiac pacemakers. The first cell phone in 1947. Even the 3-D imaging that has now become Google Earth. Those are but a few of the ways we have led innovation over the past decades.

Now even greater challenges call for your expertise and problem-solving skills. Whether you’re a recent graduate in a technical discipline or a working professional at a high-tech company, we’ll empower you to use EVERYTHING you know … and enhance that knowledge.

SCIENCE

Imagine tackling challenges on the frontiers of science that make a difference to your nation. You might be surprised about the broad range of scientific disciplines that the CIA needs to get a comprehensive picture of the world: applied physics, biology, chemistry, computer science, electrochemistry, materials science and nanotechnology to name a few. And unlike an academic job, your breakthroughs in the lab will have an impact on important missions. As a scientist here, your perseverance not only advances knowledge, but it leads to relevant discoveries for your nation.

A FEW EXAMPLES OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE WITH BACKGROUNDS IN SCIENCE:

• Cartographers
• Clandestine Officers
• Cyber Threat Analysts
• Data Scientists
• Environmental Safety Officers
• Geographers
• Science, Technology & Weapons Analysts
• Technical Analysts
• Technical Development Officers
• Technical Operations Officers
• Technical Research Officers

TECHNOLOGY

In today’s world, a smartphone or a social media posting can be as dangerous as a tank. Hostile forces have again and again proven their adeptness at mastering new technologies. Consequently, the CIA needs technical leaders who can understand the use and misuse of cyber devices and networks. Modern threats demand digital savvy beyond what’s needed in commercial endeavors. After all, it’s not sales or a balance sheet at stake. It’s the very freedom that enables our businesses to operate and allows our citizens to enjoy technological convenience.

If you have a background in computer science, computer engineering, systems engineering or information assurance, we invite you to consider working for the organization that helps keep America’s innovative edge.

A FEW EXAMPLES OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE WITH BACKGROUNDS IN TECHNOLOGY:

• Application Developers
• Clandestine Officers
• Cyber Security Officers
• Cyber Threat Analysts
• Data Center Specialists
• Human Resources Analysts
• IT Auditors
• IT Engineers
• Science, Technology & Weapons Analysts
• Technical Analysts
• Technical Development Officers
• Technical Operations Officers
• Technical Research Officers

“We obviously can’t tell you everything we do. But trust us: It’s cool. “ — Joshua O., Midcareer Officer

ENGINEERING

In a world where hours – and even minutes – can be essential to protecting the citizens of the United States, your role as a CIA engineer goes beyond traditional problem-solving. You must facilitate the delivery of intelligence from geopolitical trouble spots around the globe – putting precise, timely information in the hands of our decision-makers.

A FEW EXAMPLES OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE WITH BACKGROUNDS IN ENGINEERING:

“I am an engineer, and I helped take down a terrorist network.” — Ava K., Midcareer Officer

MATH

• Clandestine Officers
• Computer Engineers
• Counterintelligence Threat Analysts
• Cyber Threat Analysts
• Enterprise Systems Engineers
• Facilities Support Program Managers
• IT Engineer Supervisors
• Network Engineers
• Science, Technology & Weapons Analysts
• Security Engineers
• Technical Development Officers

Did you know that your expertise in math, statistics and economics can crack open critical intelligence? That’s because big data holds secrets. Your role will require you to call on everything you know: Decipher the patterns. Tell the story. Transform that information into intelligible and actionable reports. Your work helps turn the most complex puzzles into the informed policies set by the President, the Cabinet, Congress and Defense. When you bring your mathematical and computational skills to work at the CIA, the results are literally “incalculable.”

A FEW EXAMPLES OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE WITH BACKGROUNDS IN MATH:

• Analytic Methodologists
• Clandestine Officers
• Cyber Security Officers
• Data Scientists
• Human Resources Analysts
• Science, Technology & Weapons Analysts
• Technical Analysts
• Technical Research Officers

“Working here isn’t for everyone, but I don’t think you will find any place more rewarding.” — Dasha B., Senior Officer

ONE TITLE. MANY JOBS.

It takes a team of the best and brightest to do extraordinary work. Frequently, many opportunities are available under one job title. For example, you might see a listing for a particular position on the CIA careers site (such as Data Scientist), but that doesn’t mean the Agency is hiring just one Data Scientist.

If you’re selected to join the CIA, you’ll be engaged in purposeful, gratifying work. Though largely unknown except to your leadership and colleagues, what you accomplish at the Agency will contribute to the safety of your family, friends, neighbors and every citizen of the United States. Join a group of distinguished women and men who – like you – believe in using and advancing their exceptional abilities and potential on behalf of national security.

Visit our careers website today and get ready to do EVERYTHING you ever thought possible.

To learn more and apply, visit cia.gov/careers

CIA employees in certain occupations, who have a degree in a STEM field, may be eligible for special pay. For more information, please contact your recruiter.

THE WORK OF A NATION. THE CENTER OF INTELLIGENCE. cia.gov/careers
An equal opportunity employer and a drug-free workforce.

We are an organization that welcomes anyone interested in the culture, food, language, etc. You do not have to be Hispanic in order to be a member of this club. Our goal is to ultimately create a family within our club between our general body members and our executive board. During our general body meetings we participate in activities where we can interact with one another and range from sharing our cultures, telling stories, getting to know each other better through fun games and staying up to date on current events that can impact the Hispanic community. Under normal circumstances, our club holds two main events: El Encuentro and La Reunion. El Encuentro is a formal event held in the fall in the UC Ballroom and there is a live performance, a DJ, food and dancing. La Reunion is a casual event held in the spring on Commons Terrace which has a DJ and appetizers. HLSU is a great space to feel welcomed, create strong friendships and have fun!

Undergraduate Researcher of the Week: Grace Waterman

<Tagline>Blood pressure medicine and heat stress</Tagline>

Grace Waterman is a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
major who will graduate this spring. She is a member of the Biological
Sciences Departmental Honors Program, and a URA Scholar.

Title
of your research project: Testing the Effects of Entresto on
the Heat Stress Response of Drosophila melanogaster

Describe
    your project:

My project is a group project focused
on determining how Entresto, a blood pressure medication, impacts response to
heat stress in different ages and genetic backgrounds in Drosophila
melanogaster. We want to apply the results we find from our experiment to
predict how people taking Entresto will be affected by heat stress, like a heat
    wave.

Who is
    your mentor(s) for your project?

Dr. Jeff Leips, Department of
    Biological Sciences

I found my mentor when I was taking
BIOL 142. Dr. Leips discussed his research one day during class and it sounded
interesting. After learning more about his research online, I asked if I could
join his lab and participate in the research.

I chose Dr. Leips because I am
interested in the projects in his lab. I also chose the Leips Lab because
before joining the lab, everyone was incredibly nice and supportive. I could
tell it would be a great environment to do research in.

How did
you become interested in this project?

When interviewing to join the Leips
Lab, Dr. Leips told me about each of the projects being done in the lab and I
chose to join the Entresto group. My project is a further investigation of the
Entresto project from when I joined the lab.

What
has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected
    thing about being a researcher?

During my time as an undergraduate
researcher, one of the projects I worked on has had numerous setbacks. We have
had everything from controlled temperature room failures to the COVID-19
pandemic to equipment malfunctions. Having numerous setbacks can be hard but it
has taught me that research can sometimes go wrong, and you cannot give up.

What
has been the most rewarding part?

The
most rewarding part of being a researcher has been discovering my passion for
research. Before joining a lab, I was not completely sure I wanted to pursue
research in graduate school or as a career. After working in a lab, I found
research is what I am passionate about. Even when I encountered numerous
setbacks in my projects, I still enjoyed doing research.

What is
your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

My advice to other students is to
never give up. When pursuing research, things often do not go as planned. You

I plan to attend graduate school

aim to work in the pharmaceutical industry and become a leader in the field of
    drug development.

Due to the COVID-related campus closure, URCAD XXV will be held online again this spring. You will be able to view presentations, watch films, see video of dance and music performances, view artwork, and interact with presenters during the asynchronous event.

Last April, 251 students presented their research and creative work, and thousands of visitors logged on the URCAD online via an interactive platform called VoiceThread. Nothing can compare to being together to be able to celebrate all of the research, scholarship, and creative work of our talented UMBC undergraduate students. Experiencing the live dance performances, being able to talk face to face with students about their research, or being able to take a ride on a kinetic sculpture are things that are meant to be experienced in person, and the energy of hosting URCAD on campus is irreplaceable. But last years online event provided a unique experience for visitors to explore the presentations and to interact with presenters in really meaningful ways. The online format also expanded URCAD to a global event- visitors logged on from as far away as Korea and the U.K.

Mark your calendars for the week of April 19-23, 2021 for URCAD XXV Online!

You can still view the presentations form 2020 here: https://urcad.umbc.edu/departments/

We will host several workshop to help students prepare their online presentations.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentors on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBCs commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD. Mentors, fellow students, friends, family members, high school teachers and students, graduate school recruiters, and the general public are invited to attend.

URCAD 2021 Alumni Keynote Speaker

Klaudine Wakasa

Green Economy Advisor to International Governments

08 B.S.
